Thousands of youths to lose access to unemployment benefits after welfare law change
Thousands of youths across the country are set to lose access to unemployment benefits, after a welfare bill passed into law under urgency on Friday night.
From November 2026, the government will end Jobseeker payments to 18-19-year-olds whose parents earn more than $67,225.
The limit was originally just over $65,000 when the policy was announced, but has since been adjusted.
In October last year, it was estimated that about 4300 young people would become ineligible for support as a result.

…Uni Students are left with enormous student debt and the only place they can pay that off is offshore. Punishing them for leaving is ugly politics.
We should be offering bonded free Tertiary Education so that those with skills get good local jobs.
Labour promising to hire all nurses is a great policy!
Punishing those who flee is like arresting the homeless they create.
As for punishing 4300 18 and 19 year olds on sickness benefits, why be so needlessly cruel and create so much stress for those teenagers?
It’s like the Government are chasing policy that will lift the stress levels of those already vulnerable.
It’s culture war revenge fantasies masquerading as social policy.

Actually it’s a terrible policy. The places nurses will be hired will be the places most of them don’t want to be, specifically mental health and geriatrics. The choice then becomes one of being forced to work somewhere they don’t want to be or going overseas. Many will choose the latter.
This dumb policy is going to drive more of our youth overseas not keep them here.
They can’t wait for the thousands of jobs promised by the current government. The cut to the benefit is stupid better to help them while they are on a benefit than to burden more families as 65k before taxes is buggar all. More 18 years olds need to get themselves registered and vote this lot out.
This mean National lot has no human touch. They simply want the revenue from as many of those already in need.
Youth are our future so govt should be supporting them with courses and ways to inspire them and keep them occupied. The devil makes work for idle hands! We so need a total reset!
Perhaps National could make room for these people in their boot camps?
Oh that’s right.
National’s great policy that was supposed to be the answer to juvenile delinquency that failed so miserably that its existence is now neither confirmed nor denied.
