Gas Security Fund: Who else is lining up to apply for loans from Govt’s $200m fund?
The Government’s $200 million Gas Security Fund awarded its first payout last week and if Resources Minister Shane Jones has his way it will be fully subscribed before the November election.
The money isn’t likely to develop any big new field, as initially planned. The natural gas it does bring to market is likely to be from existing reserves (perhaps already considered commercially viable) and some of what it buys will be gas storage.
Just 17 companies have applied for help, which looks like a pretty poor showing until you consider how few companies remain active in New Zealand oil and gas exploration and production – fewer than a dozen.
The fund’s first payout, a loan of $23.5m, was announced last week and goes to Todd Energy, owned by one of the country’s wealthiest families.
Parent firm Todd (previously Todd Corporation) donated to the National Party in 2024 and 2025, a total of $14,261.

As the planet burns, this Government sets up a $200m slush fund for the climate pollution industry and the first payout is to Todd Energy, who are donors to the National Party???!!!???!!!

Indeed, this is blatant corruption but not unexpected. This CoC has revelled in coruption since day one and will continue until stopped by law or some other means – maybe AI or climate! This current government is definitely promoting ‘upheaval’ with their ‘anti-Maori’ rhetoric. There are still people spreading untruths that Maori will take over NZ! How stupid is that? Maori only make up 17.5% of people in NZ. All they are asking for is the honouring of the Treaty of Waitangi and the rights to which they are more than entitled having been here ~400 years before the settlers! So, clearly there are still deceitful people out there scare-mongering any ‘slow-witted’ pakeha that Maori are a threat to them! Like I said, this CoC will go to any lengths!
