MEDIAWATCH: Kiri Allan’s bizarre NZ Herald Column attacking John Tamihere
I like John Tamihere.
I’ve known him for decades.
He is a fierce fighter, very funny and brilliant.
He took a broken Māori Party and re-set it.
He is brutally loyal, and when his co-leaders were facing an internal challenge he responded with napalm.
His style ruffles a lot of feathers, but if the left have ANY hope of negotiating against Labour’s incrementalism, it rests with JT after the election.
I also like Kiri Allan.
She is staunch, funny and bloody talented.
Her fall from grace was a sad personal event and I wish her the very best in moving forward, which was why I was very interested in her first column for the NZ Herald which focused on the National Iwi Chairs Forum in Queenstown.
Now, I don’t want to shit on the fact the National Iwi Chairs Forum are rich enough to swank around Queenstown, but I was staggered by Kiri’s attack on John Tamihere.
From the way she wrote the column, she was insinuating that JT bombed at the conference, misread the room and went on to criticise him.
This surprised me, not her criticism, but because JT knows how to work a room and hearing that he bombed with the National Iwi Chairs was a big story.
Problem is.
It never fucking happened!
JT wasn’t in Queenstown, he wasn’t even in the bloody South Island – it was bullshit!
How on earth could she have insinuated that he was at the conference, when he never was?
The fact that the NZ Herald then had to go and confirm that she had herself had appeared at the conference is deeply worrying.
This was Kiri’s first column for the NZ Herald.
Insinuating someone was at the conference when they were not, claiming that person bombed with Iwi leaders when they weren’t there and then scrambling to have to rewrite the column with an enormous list of clarifications is not a good start to a columnist career.
After watching this train wreck, perhaps Kiri should stick to drinking and driving.

I have read about John Tamihere from when he was running the trust and doing good things although I’m also aware of the negative thoughts around TMP that have been associated with him. I don’t have any other knowledge so I’m inclined to still believe good about him although we live in a world where people try to justify all sorts of opinions to suit whatever agenda they believe in. Kiri’s actions seem strange although time might reveal some links between people that explain what she says.
This confirms that Kiri is a first class idiot and I agree with your brutal conclusion. Who does she think she is. She confirms with her redemption story repeated in endless articles and now a book (but of course) she is a self centred dumbass with a giant sorry for herself ego who trashes her own lucky opportunities as soon as she gets them. Just fuck off, shut up and go do some good works at the local food bank if she is so desperate to be of service.
Sick to death of people trashing JT and Te Pati Māori.
Where are all the critics, bar one, of Kapa-Kingi and how that stupid stupid greedy women trashed TPM for her own selfish ends. In all the interviews with her I have seen I never see her confronted with the wrecking ball she swang … for what?! The criticism she and her horrible son accused TPM and JT of were at the credibility level of Red Guard struggle session accusations. They have not been held to account for what they did to the Left and Maoridom at all by trashing support for TPM so let’s hope the north deals to her cheap political career at the election once and for all.

it’s strange how the left will usually try to find ways to explain and forgive a person’s stupid outbursts and mistakes.
The right leaps in immediately before knowing the full story and condemns.
They would have been the curtain twitchers of the past, and running the Inquisition before that.
It’s so much easier to understand the shallow idiot proclamations from the right, made with confidence, than it is to stretch your brain and your empathy quotient, trying to understand people with real knowledge who challenge us.
As someone said ages ago, this next election is going to be an intelligence test like no other.

Someone told me they’d never vote Green because Chloe is ‘so angry’. There is no doubt that JT is the most interesting, insightful, well researched, articulate,political figures/ debaters in the country….always on point with the knowledge and ability to distill a topic down to its core essence…
His breadth of knowledge on N.Z. history makes him compulsory listening and what a waste if he gets sidelined…but N.Z. is really good at voting in shallow clowns like Luxon, Willis, Seymour and Peters….a circus over substance….comfort lurks in vacuous soundbites….not deep substance….JT is a well researched substance guy
We need an intelligent Government elected at the 2026 Elections hopefully we get a Labour/Green/TMP Coalition who will provide good Governance for NZ for the next 3 years. God Help we need it, after 3years of this Racist Egotistical COC Government, which has sent Race Relations backwards 50-60 years purely to boost their own ratings. The sooner we see the rear end of Luxon/Seymore& Winston Peters the better off NZ will be in the future. They, Hobsons Pledge and the Atlas Group have done untold damage to Race Relations here in NZ over the past 3 years.
