‘I’ve got no idea’: Luxon surprised to hear government department jobs have biggest pay increases
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon appeared shocked to learn that (according to Mike Hosking) government departments was the sector offering the biggest pay rises across the country.
In his usual Monday morning media interviews, Newstalk ZB host Mike Hosking asked Luxon what sector he thought was offering “more money than anyone else”.
Luxon said he “wouldn’t know” and guessed construction jobs due to the 35% growth.
“Big growth, but they’re not paying as much as government departments,” Hosking told the PM.
Hosking went on to tell Luxon the pay was increasing 10% year on year before asking him why that was happening.
“I’ve got not idea. That shouldn’t be happening because we have a cap down on the FTEs in the system.”

The Prime Minister was right to be surprised by claims public servants are getting 10% pay rises – because they aren’t. Official figures show public service pay rose just 1.3 percent in the year to June, while prices rose 4.1 percent.
Christopher Luxon was caught out on Newstalk ZB this morning when Mike Hosking put the SEEK Advertised Salary Index to him, showing government advertised salaries up 10 percent in the past year.
“We’re surprised too. If public service workers had a 10 percent rise in the past year, they wouldn’t be going on strike,” said Fleur Fitzsimons, National Secretary for the Public Service Association Te Pūkenga Here Tikanga Mahi.
