While doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals around the world are heroically battling the growing coronavirus pandemic, spare a thought for those doing so in a place a UN investigation last year called “one of the most dangerous places in the world for healthcare workers”: the occupied Palestinian territories. Targeting Medics One year ago this month, a UN mandated Commission of Inquiry (CoI) found reasonable grounds to believe that Israeli military snipers had intentionally shot at health workers, children, persons with disabilities and journalists at protests in Gaza. Three medics were among the more than 200 people killed during two years of Israel’s use of force at the Great March of Return demonstrations. A further 845 medics were injured. No one has been held to account for this. Attacks on Palestinian medics and the wider health sector are nothing new. Israel’s devastating military offensive on Gaza in the summer of 2014 took the lives of 23 Palestinian health workers and 556 children. Forty-five ambulances, 17 hospitals and 56 healthcare centres were damaged or destroyed. A different round of death and destruction prompted a different UN investigation, but the conclusion was all-too-familiar: that there was “substantial information pointing to serious violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law [which] may amount to war crimes.” Full article at this link: Attacks on Palestinian Health Workers

This means that the besieged Palestinian enclave has zero capacity to detect, let alone cure COVID-19 patients. “Testing at our central laboratory has stopped, after coronavirus test kits completely ran out,” Gaza health ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qidra said. According to Qidra, who communicated the news to reporters in Gaza, the dozens of samples that have already been isolated for future testing will no longer be examined by the Strip’s medical experts. Worse, this effectively means that hundreds of Gazans who are already under quarantine in the various makeshift facilities throughout the region will have to remain in permanent isolation. Qidra echoed earlier calls made by Gaza’s health authorities to “provide Gaza with testing kits as well as 100 ventilators and 140 beds for intensive care units,” Reuters news agency reported. “We have repeatedly warned that this terrifying scenario was going to happen,” said Palestinian journalist and editor of The Palestine Chronicle, Ramzy Baroud. “Without immediate and sustainable intervention from the international community, impoverished Gaza could become a hotbed for COVID-19 for years to come.” “What is needed is a fundamental and structural change that would emancipate the Palestinian healthcare system from the horrific impact of the Israeli occupation and the Israeli government’s policies of perpetual siege and politically-imposed ‘quarantines’ – also known as apartheid,” Baroud added. Gaza, with a population of 2 million, has been under a hermetic Israeli siege since 2006, when the Palestinian group Hamas won the democratic legislative elections in occupied Palestine.

Oh please, Stephen. If you stop for a moment and look at how the Israelis are treating Palestinians, you might think twice before playing the “apologist” card.

The illegal blockade on Gaza; the Wall; the illegal Israeli settlements on the West Bank; the illegal annexation of East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights; the illegal gradual expansion of Israel’s borders past it’s UN mandated 1948 lines – these all point to unrelenting aggression by Israel.

The Jewish people who perished in the Holocaust did not die so Israel could be justified in it’s aggressive expansionism and subjugation of Palestinians.

So you are “apologising” for the wrong thing.
