Plan to guard notorious Israeli prison with crocodiles stalled over animal welfare concerns

A legal battle has erupted in Israel over a government plan to build a moat around a prison and fill it with crocodiles.

The plan, first proposed by the country’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir late last year, had largely flown under the radar in recent months until an animal welfare group launched a challenge.

On Sunday, local time, the Jerusalem District Court announced a temporary injunction preventing the Israel Prison Service (IPS) from deploying Nile crocodiles to the notorious Ketziot Prison.

The facility is in a remote part of the Negev Desert, close to the Egyptian border in Israel’s south, and houses many Palestinian prisoners, including some who were involved in Hamas’s deadly 7 October 2023 attacks against Israel.

…the issue isn’t the dehumanising of Palestinians, it’s welfare concern for the crocodiles!
