Luxon leadership: National MPs hit phones on possible change after MMP captain’s call
Discontented National Party MPs hit the phones on Monday, with one MP confirming to the Herald that they had fielded “several” phone calls about a potential leadership change.
The speculation was triggered by Christopher Luxon’s announcement on Thursday he supported an MMP referendum if National wins the election – comments that caught many of his own MPs unaware.
That MP, who the Herald has agreed not to name, said “there’s going to be change” in the top job.
“It’s just a question of who is going to be it.”
They said there was a flurry of phone conversations between MPs on Monday.

The first we heard about this was late last night after an internal poll spooked National MPs to start the numbers on Luxon.
The problem is that they don’t have enough of a majority for Erica or Bishop.
The problem with Erica would be put directly to her on the floor of Parliament under Parliamentary privilege the moment she was announced as leader.
The problem with Bishop is the wider Caucus hates him.
That National are panicking this much highlights how utterly divided they currently are and this will feed into the election campaign itself as more and more National MPs start seeing Luxon as the problem.
National are in deep trouble.
Winston and Seymour will be laughing all the way to the election because they are the ones cannibalising Luxon’s vote.

His whole problem is that he thinks he’s an American, here playing at being a prime minister for the benefit of their corporations and govt.
He has failed to brush up on being a New Zealander, he’s missed decades worth of cultural happenings which have changed this country massively, he speaks American corporate gobble-do-gook which no-one understands and now, he’s getting very sick of his assignment and can’t wait to leave.
He’s like a fish out of water here, doesn’t fit in anywhere comfortably.

The question should be why is Hipkins and the NZLP not firing and taking advantage of how bad Luxon and this government actually is.

You could be right. Imagine Bish becomes PM, sacks Winnie as Foreign Minister and we go to the polls. That could be worth 5% for National.
If Luxon goes, Hipkins must go too. Hipkins only has a small chance at winning the election because EVERYONE hates Luxon and Hipkins is slightly less hated, you replace Luxon with anyone and the NZ public automatically goes into “give them a chance mode” and Hipkins becomes the most unpopular leader.
Labours only lead in the polls for most of the year because Labour has been invisible and National has been very visible, as we get closer to the election air time is becoming more equal and the more people are seeing of Hipkins the more they remember “oh yeah we hate this guy”
So if Luxon is rolled, anyone who doesn’t want a National government needs to demand Hipkins be rolled and Kieran McNulty take over everytime the labour party or an mp makes a post.
Makes sense although I am no fan of the uninspiring Hipkins.
Neither Peters nor Seymour would want Luxon rolled because they might be stuck with a new National Party leader who doesn’t go belly up every time they make impatient noises.
The COC must be scratching their heads atm things are looking murky. The left need to keep their heads screwed on and not F*ck It Up. I don’t think I could stomach another 3 years of COC???

That would be right ad Key and Luxon are as thick as thieves, thieves being the operative word. Luxon may or may not have been a great CEO but he is a moron of a politician.
The issue really is that the senior leadership of the National party is what I would term a charisma vacuum, making any leadership tilt unlikely to gain sufficient momentum to turn the tide at the election in my opinion.

The faces of Bishop and Stanford, tell it all, as once again Luxon lands another comment “out of left field” onto them. He is now at the ‘boy trantrum’ stage and demonstrating that he is totally ‘lost and clueless’ which most of us realised a long time ago! I almost felt sorry for him as it is mainly of his own making, with a large pinch of ACT and a full handful of NZF – but what do they expect to get from this? There is not one MP, with any leadership qualities capable of taking over. They have become corrupt liars, con-men, and narcissists. Any coalition MUST have a strong leader who can get rid of the “It’s all about me – showoffs”! They are now reaping what they have sown – the cracks have been there from the start and it’s too late to mend them. Go away National, Act and NZF and rebuild with some values, principles, and moral fortitude. You’ve blown it big time!

The issue now Peter is Luxon himself has made Chippy prime ministerial. The coalition will not return to government.
Two things could have erased this situation, Luxon shows strength and sacked Peters for being racist and Luxon kept his mouth shut on MMP. Luxon is weak and that has been on full display.

Labour has so much ammo against Luxon…and National/ ACT as a whole… that he will be absolutely slaughtered in the debates. However…if he is still around come the election campaign he will do what he has always done and just not front.
He didn’t front for the final debate against chippy at the last election campaign when the opportunity presented itself….he refuses to front for the tradional weekly interview slot on the TV 1 Breakfast Show…he has refused to be interviewd by Jack Tame on TV 1’s only serious political programme Q&A since November 2024 and walks out of standup press conferences if he doesn’t like the questions…..
This is ridiculous and untenable….He is no more a leader than the man on the moon!
Really the next lot down (in the National party) are just as bad as Luxon. I believe this new National party is a very different beast nothing like the National of old who had integrity and valued having strong Maori relationships. And although I am not a national party voter they would not have pandered to Seemore or Winstone as their current leader has. Too many NZers are struggling and there are no opportunities for our young people. We desperately need a change of government as Act and NZF are divisive and owned by their rich backers.
