Citizens’ arrest powers set for major expansion under new law
Retailers and members of the public will soon have expanded powers to detain suspected offenders under a major overhaul of the Crimes Act that is expected to pass its final reading this week.
Under the changes, anyone making a citizen’s arrest must contact police and follow their instructions. The law will also clarify that reasonable restraints and reasonable force may be used when making an arrest.

- The Government wants to broaden citizen’s arrest powers so they apply to any Crimes Act offence at any time of day, and clarify “reasonable” force as including bodily harm in certain circumstances.
- They currently only apply to offences of a certain severity, with different thresholds during working hours.
- There is no specific protection for children or young people, which the Chief Children’s Commissioner says neglects their right to be free from all violence.

ZB Dads, Redneck Crackers and Culture War Boomers are salivating at the chance to beat up Māori kids suspected of shoplifting. They are the exact pumped up toxic masculinity males who will become judge, jury and executioner in scenarios like this.
Good social policy stops fellow citizens physically confronting one another.
Bad social policy enables citizens to physically confront one another.
Why does the Supermarket Duopoly have so much power? They already price gouge us and have mass surveillance face recognition powers, why are their profit margins suddenly sacrosanct enough to enable staff AND bystanders to physically attack suspected thieves?
ZB Dads, Redneck Crackers and Culture War Boomers will all believe at the outset of the physical confrontation that they can physically manage the situation, (because men always tend to overestimate their abilities) and they are going to suddenly be confronted by a very desperate person with little to lose.
This is going to be a recipe for disaster.
Either the ZB Dad, Redneck Cracker or Culture War Boomer will get seriously injured by the desperate person they physically attack or they will hurt the Māori kid.
Either outcome will see an enormous explosion of anger from either side.

You say it will appeal to ZB dads. Nuh, they won’t want to risk injury.
Goldsmith, he with the dead, cold eyes; this Vigilante law certainly suits this mean, sad excuse of a man! What “stories” will be invented by those “so called white Nationalist Citizens”, who are hell bent on punishing our poorer people for being poor – for stealing to eat or feed their families. Had this horrible CoC bothered to bring in fair taxation, try to keep as many jobs as possible, and provide sheltered accommodation for the worst affected, i.e. those living on the streets who no longer have a job, we wouldn’t be at this LOW point! But no, ‘Christian’ Luxon didn’t want a bar of it! He was “sorted” as were his RW voters / enablers so it became “every many for himself” and obvious who is going to win, especially when you bring in the smug, ZB brigade and its trolls! NZ Police are very unhappy with this law as it gives “Citizens” more freedom to arrest than our Police! And again, it will be rammed through with no transparency or fine tuning! Where did we get these ugly, vile, corrupt, twisted people – from the depths of hell? This behaviour is straight out of the Trump ‘Liars’ Manual’ and will lead to worse outcomes! FGS show some compassion, empathy and provide shelter and food for those who are on the brink of starvation!
Can we setup a guide for ringing the police to perform a citizens arrest on National party MPs? Shouldn’t be hard to find some reason that they have caused harm, after a few thousand people ring Goldsmith might start regretting his law.
