Democratic Socialism is not Communism – Trump needs a dictionary

All Trump has left is name calling and he’s screaming ‘communist’ at the new wave of Democrats who are challenging the venal greed of neoliberal free market capitalism.

Zohran Mamdani is NOT a communist. He is a Democratic Socialist.

Democratic Socialists believe the state has an obligation to tax the rich to provide a basic floor that all citizens benefit from.

In complex societies, the garbage driver, the mother, the nurse, the street sweeper, the cleaner, the teacher – they all have roles that are crucial for the success of that society.

Everyone who is participating in the community and the economy deserves the harvest of civil society.

That means using the power of the State to directly lower costs and fully fund public services.

Mamdani is popular because he is directly tackling the cost of living.

Free public transport.

Better after school free care.

Rent controls.

Government backed supermarkets.

This isn’t Communism, this is the State acting in the welfare of its citizens!

This is Democratic Socialism!

I’m a post-Marxist anarchist with violent environmental tendencies, but I don’t want communism!

I want Democratic Socialism!

I want the State to tax the mega wealthy and redistribute that by fully funding our public services, climate adaptation and infrastructure.

I want new parents given more support with 6 months maternity leave.

I want the Supermarket Duopoly broken up and a third chain backed by the State and Iwi.

I want 50 000 state houses built.

I want 100% renewable electricity production.

I want free dental.

I want house insulation for the poorest properties and new home cooling systems for all those ugly Town Houses they’ve built.

I want free public transport.

I want food banks that don’t require all the paper work from the poor to gain access.

I want far more spent on the Arts.

I want universal union membership.

I want family carers to be properly paid to look after their elderly, disabled and sick whanau.

I want a Sugar Tax, a Land Tax, a Wealth Tax, a new top tax rate, a Financial Transaction Tax, Bank Tax, Pollution Tax I want GST lowered to 10% and I want the first $10 000 tax free.

I want vast new green economy investment focused on sustainability.

I want our people to eat the best kai grown and caught here in NZ.

I want to help first time home buyers while punishing property pimps.

That is Democratic Socialism.

That is what we urgently need.

Screaming ‘Communist’ misses the actual debate, and that’s why they scream Communist.
