Bryan Bruce – What Kind Of Country Do We Want To Be?

I went to the politics section of the RNZ site this morning and saw the summaries of two stories next to each other that seemed to me to pose the real question for this coming election – What kind of country do we want to be?
The first features a story about how one in seven of our children are living in poverty and Child Poverty Action Group calling for all political parties to address this crisis .
The second is a story about how ACT want people who gamble on crypto currencies to get a tax break.
One story is about responsibility and duty of care for others -about having a WE society,
The other story is about promoting selfishness and the irresponsibility of the ME society .
That’s your choice this election.
Do you want to continue to be ruled by the economics and politics of selfishness or do we want us to have a fairer society in which we look after each other and no child goes to bed hungry tonight?
You can find both those sties here
Bryan Bruce is one of NZs best documentary makers and writes at Substack.

We seem to be aspiring towards ‘Private Wealth, Public Squalor’!
I have some doubts about Bryan’s discernment abilities, after listening to

Documentary on death of New Zealand aid worker in Ukraine
Nine To Noon
31 August 2026
A new documentary finds it almost certain that New Zealand aid worker Andrew Bagshaw was murdered by Russian soldiers. Andrew was killed in Ukraine in 2023 but his family’s quest for his death to be recognised a war crime is yet to happen. A postmortem showed he and British volunteer Christopher Parry were killed by gunshots. A British coroner found “some evidence” of involvement by the Wagner Group – a Russian-state funded private military company. The documentary is from true crime investigator Bryan Bruce.
A “country” that allows non-citizens to vote for NACT, obviously. Won’t be a country too much longer…
