The National Coalition have changed the voting rules .
440,000 eligible people are not enrolled, including approximately 200,000 people aged 18–24 and what the Right Wing is counting on is that the majority of these people will not enrol before the absolute cut off date of October 25th .

There is a significant change to New Zealand’s voting rules for the 2026 General Election, and it means voters need to act earlier than they did at the last two elections.
The 2026 General Election is Saturday 7 November 2026. The most important change is that you can no longer turn up at a voting place, enrol, and vote at the same time.
The critical dates
4 October 2026 Recommended date to be enrolled by if you want to receive an EasyVote card
25 October 2026 Absolute deadline to enrol or update your address
If somebody who is otherwise eligible to vote has not enrolled by then, they will not be able to vote in the 2026 election.
26 October 2026 Advance voting begins
7 November 2026 Election Day
This is quite different from 2020 and 2023, when people could enrol — including updating their details — right through to Election Day. The new law closes enrolment 13 days before Election Day.
What you need to do immediately
Check now that you are enrolled and that your address is correct.
The easiest way is through the Electoral Commission’s website:

To enrol or update details online you can use a New Zealand driver licence, New Zealand passport or RealMe verified identity. Alternatively, call 0800 36 76 56, or text your name and address to 3676, and the Electoral Commission will send an enrolment form.
There is a particular risk for people who have moved house.
If your address isn’t up to date, you should change it before 25 October. Depending on when and where they moved, failure to update could mean they are only able to cast a party vote rather than both a party and electorate vote.
Other voting-rule changes
The Electoral Amendment Act 2025 also makes several other changes:
- Advance voting is fixed at 12 days.
- The prohibition on prisoner voting has been extended. Prisoners serving sentences of three years or more remain disqualified, while prisoners serving shorter sentences are also disqualified where relevant offending occurred after the new law took effect.
- It is now an offence to improperly influence somebody’s decision about whether to enrol or whether to choose the Māori or general roll, including through money or gifts.
- Free food, drink or entertainment cannot be offered within 100 metres of a voting place during voting hours.
- The Electoral Commission is making greater use of email, text and government-held information to maintain and update electoral information.
Why this matters
The Electoral Commission said on 10 August 2026 that about 440,000 eligible people were not enrolled, including approximately 200,000 people aged 18–24.
So the simplest public message for the 2026 election is:
CHECK YOU’RE ENROLLED NOW.
UPDATE YOUR ADDRESS IF YOU’VE MOVED.
DO IT NO LATER THAN 25 OCTOBER.
YOU CANNOT ENROL AT THE POLLING PLACE THIS YEAR.

Then. Mandate our vote and lower the voting age to 16. The same age required to be legally able to drive.

Don’t vote TOP
Whether TOP goes into formal coalition with National, or sits on the Cross Benches, the result is the same – A National led government.
Even if TOP don’t make the 5% threshold, TOP have already stolen so many votes from the Left that they have tipped the balance in favour of National.
If TOP don’t make the 5% threshold all of the votes stolen from the Left by TOP, will be not be counted.
If you don’t want a National led coalition government don’t vote TOP.
I agree. Vote National in your electorate vote, and ACT in your party vote if you want to keep the country on the path to recovery.
James you are full of it. I expect Labour will come in with the Greens and possibly TPM. But Labour will have to have their feet held to the fire because no matter what they say we will never every get a decent public health service, good education for all, a real strategy on climate change UNLESS we tax more. It is pathetic that Labour who are afraid of their own shadow are so damn weak on all of this. So James please tell us 10 good things the coalition have done in the past 3 years.
