Lynn, I believe the answser lies with Corrections policy: “a transgender prisoner whose detention relates to a serious sexual offence against a person of their nominated gender, or who was released from a prison sentence within the last seven years, will not be eligible to apply to the Chief Executive [for placement in accordance with their nominated gender].”

That seems fairly clear to me.

There must be a rational way to protect women, girls, AND transwomen from sexual predators who want to mis-use self-identification for perverted reasons. (Not that such a thing would be wide-spread. Most predators wouldn’t even be aware of trans self-idfentification, surely?)

Denying a sector of the LGBTQI community their right to be recognised as they identify is not an option. Because first they’ll start with transwomen & men. Then gay men. Then lesbians. Is tyhat the road we want to go down?

I believe Frank addressed that point in his blogpost. Which makes me wonder, HAVE YOU ACTUALLY READ ANYTHING HE’S WRITTEN?????

Why do you assume that only trans-women are capable of violence? You must be aware that prisons, by their nature, are violent places. Identifying and demonising one tiny minority – without much evidence – serves no purpose (unless that purpose is to demonise that minority).

The stats reported 1,500 assaults in one year. There were 10,000 prisoners, of whom seven were transgender, housed in a women’s prison. One of those was a trans-man (assigned female at birth, but identifies as male).

So the stats prove very little.

In fact, Lynn, the OIA statement is vague on the entire issue.

The claims made surrounding the six alleged assaults have been shown to be misleading and not based on fact. It is unfortunate that certain people were willing to mis-represent the OIA statement and withhold salient facts.

What is not stated here is, if Corrections has a copy of a birth certificate that states the prisoner is female, procedure requires that they MUST be placed in the female estate.

Where does it say that in the OIA letter? The assaults were allegedly prisoner-on-prisoner, not prisoner-on-staff.

I have on open mind on this issue but first I’d like the information to be correct and not hearsay or made up.

Daphna, the OIA response does not support your allegations.

In fact, the OIA response is vague as to what form any of the alleged assaults were.

There have been assaults, the males (transwomen) are not moved back to men’s prisons afterwards.

There are transwomen rubbing their erect penises against the prison guards.

Women in prisons are among the most marginalised people in society. They should not be housed with male criminals. It’s not hard to figure out, unless you don’t give a shit.
