ACT racist attack on Māori and Pacifica medical placements
ACT to campaign on scrapping Māori and Pacific med school places as review remains hidden
A review of medical schools’ affirmative action schemes has been completed. The ACT Party says it shows unjustified discrimination is taking place – but the report is nowhere to be seen.
A much-awaited review of medical school schemes which aim to produce more Māori and Pacific doctors shows that racial discrimination is not justified, the ACT Party claims.
Leader David Seymour said his party would now campaign to have the programmes at the University of Auckland and University of Otago scrapped.
The review of the admission programmes is part of the National-Act coalition agreement and is one of the last outstanding items to be ticked off this term.
Stuff
How desperate are ACT to scrape the barrel of this sad racist old trope?
Racists in NZ desperately seeking examples of ‘Māori privilege’ have always tried to use Māori med placements as the roaring evidence of their prejudice.
Bullshit.
Here’s what the racists never tell you.
While it is absolutely true that Māori and Pacifica students can gain entry to Med school on lower grades, what is NEVER explained is what happens after that.
Once Māori and Pacifica students have gained entrance to Med School THEY NEED TO ACHIEVE THE SAME GRADES as everyone else to continue studying.
There is a plethora of academic research showing minorities respond well to medical practitioners of the same ethnicity, gaining more Māori and Pacifica Drs is a GOOD thing and opening the parameters for gaining entry to ensure that isn’t apartheid!
Again – once those students gain entry, they have to achieve the same academic standards.
Pretending Māori and Pacifica placements at Med School is your great proof of Māori privilege is sad and deeply embarrassing.
