  1. That’s outright classist. Don’t tax the rich, cut the poor’s wages. The fact that he calls cutting youth rates 40% an “opportunity wage” shows us how stupid he thinks we are! Contemptuous!

  2. Seymour’s a nothing. He’s a nobody. His ego tells him his own buckled truths, the ones he loves to hear. Remember, his warped and dangerous truths are not ours so let’s just get rid of him . Purge him out of our governance. and make voting compulsory for Christ’s sake. And please… read this book because the other thing seymour is, is that he’s roger douglas’s acolyte and roger douglas delivered to us that unholy doctrine called neoliberalism. Read the book! Know your enemy. The Invisible Doctrine. The Secret History of Neoliberalism (& How It Came To Control Your Life) George Monbiot and Peter Hutchison https://www.penguin.co.nz/books/the-invisible-doctrine-9781802062694
    Read. The. Book. Please.

  3. Its very surprising he isnt planning to have the Remunerarion Authority freeze politicians salaries for the next three years!

  4. David Seymour wants to freeze the minimum wage for three years. Let’s be brutally honest about what that means. It means telling the backbone of our society, the core workers in our society, the cleaner, supermarket worker, caregiver, kitchen hand or labourer — someone who may already be working two jobs just to put food on the table, keep a roof over their family’s heads and give their kids a decent education — that they can forget about a pay rise for three years.

But the landlord won’t freeze the rent.

The supermarket won’t freeze the grocery bill. Oh gosh no. The duopoly, almost monopoly that currently exists will only stamp out competition and keep the cost of food high.

The power companies won’t freeze the electricity bill. God forbid. They will keep increasing their fixed costs while all along putting up the false face of decency by saying they are doing all they can to keep costs down.

The petrol station won’t freeze the price of fuel.

The bank won’t freeze the mortgage. Nope. Interests rates will keep increasing.

So whose interests does Seymour’s policy actually protect?

    Not the worker.

It protects the employer’s bottom line by making sure one of their biggest costs — wages — stays artificially low.

And Mr Seymour, don’t insult good decent hard-work working New Zealanders by dressing this up as helping them into employment. Someone already working 40, 50 or 60 hours a week doesn’t need a lesson in “work incentives”. They need to be paid enough to live.

A person who works full-time should not have to take a second job simply to put dinner on the table. Freezing the minimum wage while the cost of living continues to rise isn’t really a “freeze”. It’s a pay cut. A pay cut imposed on the people least able to afford it.

So, Mr Seymour, while you and your support network will scoff at this criticism, perhaps stop asking how little New Zealand’s lowest-paid workers can survive on — and start asking why some of them have to work two jobs just to give their children the ordinary things that more affluent families take for granted. Because this isn’t about “workers versus your far right-wing ideology”. It’s about whether we believe that a hard day’s work should provide a decent life.

It is quite clear that ACT’s idea of helping working New Zealanders is to make sure they remain cheap enough for someone else to get richer.

    1. Bloody well said!

ACT seem to genuinely detest the poor, the unemployed, the disabled, women, those on minimum wage, Maori, school children and probably kittens. It’s like someone decided to assemble all of the worst people in the country, have them form a political party, then set them loose to ruin the lives of their fellow New Zealanders.

I’ve always wondered — who, apart from career drop-kicks like Paul Henry, actually votes for these monsters? And what the fuck is wrong with them?

  5. “Unfortunately, the real minimum wage is always zero, regardless of the laws, and that is the wage that many workers receive in the wake of the creation or escalation of a government-mandated minimum wage, because they lose their jobs or fail to find jobs when they enter the labor force. Making it illegal to pay less than a given amount does not make a worker’s productivity worth that amount—and, if it is not, that worker is unlikely to be employed.”
― Thomas Sowell, Basic Economics: A Citizen’s Guide to the Economy

    1. Interesting but irrelevant to the discussion about the changes Seymour has proposed. It might have escaped your notice that we have a minimum wage and a welfare system and while the current government has done it’s best to diminish the welfare system any thinking person can understand that the closer the minimum wage is to the welfare payment the less likely it is that people will work for the minimum wage.
The issue with productivity in employment is a different question and while some jobs do not produce enough to justify a decent wage that should not be used as an excuse by low life employers to pay slave rates to desperate employees so they can profit from it. The evidence shows that most of the productivity growth over recent decades has been taken by owners as workers wages have not kept up with the increase in their production. You should keep up with the available evidence instead of offering misleading comments.

    2. A simple google search gives paid to this crap. “working people frequently faced severe hunger, malnutrition, and outright starvation before minimum wage laws existed”. History can be hell on ideology, can’t it.

  6. Lets create more poverty as there is not enough people dying in the streets .Lets not feed ,educate or house anyone who does not own 10% of nz .What the hell is wrong with NZ that these types are elected to our government .NZ has gone to hell in a hand basket since these pricks were given the reigns by Luxon .He should be charged with treason .

    1. 100% Being a small country there isn’t the institutional inertia to stop these parasitic rich vermin buggering everyone.
