  1. If I borrow money to open a shop then should the interest on the loan be a deductible business expense? If not, then why not? Which businesses should not qualify for interest deductibility and why?

    1. The Labour policy was for interest deductibility on new builds adding to rental housing but purchasing an existing property did not qualify for an interest deduction. At that time there was no meaningful capital gains tax and it did help reduce the pressure on house prices. One of the first things the current government did was change the brightline test and allow interest deduction from existing houses in a vain attempt to increase housing prices however the mood has changed and enough people understand the futility of relying on increasing house prices because it was only allowing property owners a bigger piece of a small pie instead of increasing the pie size so most people could get something.

  2. As a current politician, Tamantha Paul has every right to criticise those who have grasped this unfair advantage, ~25 additional rentals using the Landlord tax loophole! If she got a couple of names wrong, so be it. The message she was aiming to get through was that even in these ‘most difficult times’ the greedy still prosper while the needy sit by starving and struggling to pay their bills! These ugly grasping politicians are demonstrating what we already know – it’s all about ME, ME, ME and their smug entitlement is difficult to swallow. We expect better from our country’s leadership not this kind of behaviour. It’s clear WANT is stronger thant NEED! Climate will sort this one out!
