MEDIAWATCH: Thomas Coughlan and Wayne Mapp sing Father and Son to warn the Left to stay economically meaningless

Now that he is the Political Editor, Thomas Coughlan has written some deep dive explorations of the different political factions and I think he’s provided real insight in his latest investigation that highlights how radical the Greens have become since dumping James Shaw…

The Green Party’s most radical plan yet, and how Labour inspired it – Thomas Coughlan

…the technical issue here is that Grant Robertson and James Shaw locked the NZ Left into Ruth Richardson’s neoliberal debt straightjacket that ensures the State can never properly borrow to build our infrastructure.

Many on the Left have been hyper critical of this stupid fucking move that has ensured NZ never has the money to actually do the infrastructure building which leaves us in a. forever state of near achieving anything so the free market does it.

The problem is NZ is 2 giant sparsely populated islands, the free market dynamics of efficacy and competition only work in densely populated areas, NZ is barely populated and as such has always required the State to be the foundation stone.

That’s why we need a totally different view on State debt.

However, Coughlan’s conclusion that the Left shouldn’t dare be so radical…

Mamdani might chart the path to a brave new politics in the United States and NZ, but if Labour and Green strategists really are keen to throw off the mistakes of 2017, they shouldn’t forget people said the same thing about Jeremy Corbyn.

…is the exact same song that Former National Party Wayne Mapp makes here on TDB…

…that’s right folks, Wayne and Thomas are singing Cat Stevens, ‘Father and Son‘ to us.

It’s not time to make a changeJust relax, take it easyYou’re still young, that’s your faultThere’s so much you have to knowFind a girl, settle downIf you want you can marryLook at me, I am old but I’m happy

Couple of things.

1 – Jeremy Corbyn was taken down by Starmer using a bullshit anti-semitism smear.

2 – Isn’t it funny how according to Wayne Mapp, the Left must do as he says and never dare to dream by using Green and Māori MMP leverage! Yet Winston and David Seymour can fuck this country endlessly and that’s democracy, but the motherfucking millisecond the Left do it, it’s the end of Western Civilisation!

3 – The NZ Herald is the most right wing media in the country, why are we allowing them to tell us how we win this election?

The Left needs to dream big and bring policy that makes a material difference in the lives of Kiwis, and using the power of the State and the actual regulated capitalism is the way we do that.

We need to drop the alienating middle class woke Identity Politics and focus on universal left policy that actually solves the problems. Changing the neoliberal debt straightjacket is a serious means of providing real solutions.

The rich and right wing mouthpieces for the rich are terrified we will achieve that.

  1. Labours problem is that by campaigning on what they really want to do is a vote loser, so they keep it under wraps and implement their actual policy when elected, as the voters would never have voted them in had they known what was actual policy they wanted to implement. (3waters, Co-governance)
This is not exclusive to Labour, it’s not a left/right thing, it’s politics and has been done for decades in many countries.
The balancing act is ensuring it’s not too radical that the voters run to the ballot box and kick you out.

    • Wanting a fair deal for Kiwi workers isn’t radical, and isn’t the “vote loser” you paint it as.

The fear for the radical Right is if they *actually do* run on such policies, hence the need to (as you are attempting here) frame it as somehow negative.
As Capitalism dies it slow death, the inability of the business owners, landlords, banksters and their sycophants to even make the tiniest concessions only means the resulting guillotine blades get sharper and nearer.
      Good luck with that.

      • well said Jase and had we not destroyed the unions NZ would be a great country with thriving businsses because they would have well paid employees who are in turn their end customer .

    • Nationals problem is that by campaigning on what they really want to do is a vote loser, so they keep it under wraps and implement their actual policy when elected, as the voters would never have voted them in had they told them beforehand, ie, pay equity axing, severe cuts to health, underfunding infrastructure etc etc etc.
Voters won’t make the same mistake twice.

    • Your mates in the COC have now stolen the 3 waters policy and changed it so their mates can cash in on it .My local council (waitomo) is first cab off the rank in the set up of Waikato water limited .Note it is now a company and we all know companies can be sold .Also we (the rate payers ) have to stump ,up to $16 million to join the company .Where does 7500 rate payers find that cash .We are already paying over $1000 per year for a trickle feed waste water system and another $1200 for a leaking drinking water supply that cant supply enough water as soon as the first rays of sun begin in the spring .
You can keep on believing you defeated the last government on 3 waters but now you will see the real agenda behind the racist tirade of the COC before the election .THE PAKEHA HAVE STOLEN THE WATER FROM EVERY ONE IN NZ .Water will soon be owned off shore .Bring back the Maori .

  2. Green and brown will win the day .Mapp and co are clearly shitting bricks because they have no policy of their own so anything the Green and Brown team put up will be way better than what the current COC–TS HAVE TO OFFER .Two choices increased poverty ,unemployment ,failed businesses ,more crime ,less homes built ,lower wages for women OR a move to long term planing and job creation from the green energy revolution .Also moving the whole country forward not just the 1% doner rich pricks .
We have the opportunity to drain the swamp and fill in the rabbit holes and create a decent society in NZ again and become a country where kiwis want to live instead of just bringing in people from other countries to replace the masses that have left in the last 18 months .

    • Don’t think too big GWalk – promises yes but we have merely to turn the ship a fraction away from the maelstrom and we will have some safe time to think bigger ideas. I know that sort of reasoned achievable goal may not be appealing enough, but don’t over-promise. And don’t talk about draining swamps, that’s 20th century thinking. We now know that actual swamps serve a purpose, needed for our planet ecology.

It’s time for us to join the clever animal kingdom in our thinking; whales are coming to humans to get fishing nets untangled from their bodies, Jane Goodall helped an albino guerilla or chimpanzee, ostracised by the group, to make its evening leaf and branch nest. We need to think differently about each other too, and how we do things change dramatically beyond what is broadcast and absorbed at the best schools and military academies.

  3. Hmm, I was merely pointing out that the major party of a coalition, whether it is a Left or a Right coalition, gets to determine the major policies of the coalition, especially in the economic sphere. That is hardly an arch conservative proposition.
It is also what the voters expect, especially those who vote for the major party in the coalition.
Martyn seems to be advocating that the major party has to simply accept what the minor parties in the coalition demand, that the major party has no independent agency.

    • Just in case you missed this the other day: Labour needs to promote policies that will earn a significant party vote from the electorate as MMP in its current form is a failure as shown by the most ridiculous pretend three headed idiot coalition govt we have destroying the country at the moment. Unfortunately its back to no holds barred FPP politicking.

So Wayne what that means is MMP has to be modified to stop the tails wagging the dog and then Labour needs to modify the system around the failed mantra that govt should not be in the business of business and then roll back in all the govt depts that were unceremoniously dumped or sold off. This country is too small a population to have the private sector running critical infrastructure. International free markets have nothing to do with reinstating for example a working state run MoW.

        • What do you suggest Grey, heavy metal, grunge, electro, rap, folk, rock, country, orchestral, classical, punk rock or maybe cos the way I’m feeling a bit of acid rock?

    • Your mates in the COC have now stolen the 3 waters policy and changed it so their mates can cash in on it .My local council (waitomo) is first cab off the rank in the set up of Waikato water limited .Note it is now a company and we all know companies can be sold .Also we (the rate payers ) have to stump ,up to $16 million to join the company .Where does 7500 rate payers find that cash .We are already paying over $1000 per year for a trickle feed waste water system and another $1200 for a leaking drinking water supply that cant supply enough water as soon as the first rays of sun begin in the spring .

    • I get your point but you need to accept that the last 40 years have been a fail unless you are a member of the 1%.Even the (sorted ) PM is deluded if he thinks he is a member of the 1% $5 million is small change now days due to the rampant inflation over the last 40 years driven by trading ,wooden boxes at crazy prices, with one another and calling it an economy .
The fact we have poverty and homeless families should tell you that we have failed as a nation .
We need a complete reset to our thinking and bring all kiwis along for the ride not just the few .
If we look at the rise of the Maori economy you would see that if we had been working with Maori for the last two hundred years ,how much better NZ as a nation would be .Instead we still spend billions in time and lost opportunity trying to eliminate them and take what little they have left .

      • We would be a better nation if the MoW had not been destroyed and with councils following suit and dumping their works depts. Maori have proved to be fast learners and have an incredible capacity for working with technology and machinery. Listening to Winston on the news tonight with regards the ferries decrying that Irex had planned a Taj Mahal for Picton and a Sydney Opera House for Christchurch just shows the small mindedness that has kneecapped this nation in recent years.

        • My thought too around the old idiot Peters .Those ferries will be 5 billion by the time they get here and sea levels will have risen so the existing loading platforms may well be under water .No future proofing .

  4. Perhaps Tom and Wayne should reflect on this…

“The latest Stats NZ figures show in the past 12 months food prices have gone up 4.4 percent – the highest increase since December 2023.”

  6. Yeah well, meh.
Typical of tiny minds on a tiny country with a tiny economy relying entirely on a tiny population of farmers earning our only real economy.
You’ll all sit in your Teslas as you drive to your pointless office jobs to launder money sequestered from our export industries while you think you’re flasher than seymours jewel encrusted butt plug.
And as such, you will all be doomed to repeat the same mistakes that’s dragged us to this pointless point. No wonder so many people leave here for australia and beyond.

What a load of shit. Look. There is no Left left and you’d better come to terms with that or the star spangled Beast in Red camo undies will eat us up then shit us out and then we’ll belong to american fascists. Headlining today’s RNZ for the coming occupation.

We’re a strong country per head of pop and ideally placed for enduring food and wool trade and we should tighten our alignment with the Crown or y’all will be fucked without the kissing. I can see the orange president lining up with his little pink mushroom out.
Chloe Swarbrick and Willie Jackson leading a *reanimated Labour party.
    * By that I mean once purged then bleached of roger douglas’s little finger prints.

@ Maori? You’ll soon be South Pacific Mexicans.
What ever we have as a pretense of politics isn’t politics. We’re in deep shit and that shit’s getting deeper. As our PM, a faker ’till he makes ‘er waddles about thinking about his bank account his underlings undo the fly buttons of an orange tyrant.
    But I’m just a farmer so what do I know? ” Jess! Jess! ! ! Getaway back! ! “

    • Great effort kwtc. I think you are probably right on to the matter. And Mr Wayne Mapp has built his whole life and standing on being the smart and wise guy who can handle any situation, quietly and confidently and all are safe to follow his advice. So calm and reasonable.

While you kwtc jump and foam – well good on you because you are still thinking all the time. But I hope you don’t rely on a trampoline which will have to be banned for private use as we are suffer very forceful winds that seem attempting to blow us away. And they can do harm to others around. We can still have little ones or even jump around on what ground that hasn’t washed away.

    • Down on the family farm, some solid thinking going on as Murray Ball showed the Dog thinking (in The Cry of the Grey Ghost). Dog, musing about his life and happiness – what he wanted and ultimately cared about –

I was born at Aunt Dolly’s cat’s home in Tauranga. (Note – now closed.)
I was fed on liver chunks and cream.
I slept in a warm basket in the linen cupboard
with her big Persian cat Ninky Pooh.
Then she put me in her knitting basket on the
back seat of her little primrose Toyota and
      drove me to Footrot Flats.
Now I sleep in an old water tank, chew on
scrawny old ewe bones and spend my days
      chasin’ sheep and drivin’ cattle…
      That’s Progress!

(Solid thinking from a skilled, athletic farm worker – a stalwart that our farming industry is built on.)
An approach each one of us should be emulating, so as to avoid the magnetic pull exerted by rich incomers on those Kiwis who are made of true metal and alloys which are susceptible. This will be a chance to use some of those science-heavy school classes. More info for those who absorb such facts: https://sciencenotes.org/list-of-magnetic-metals/
(Note: This comment has been approved as having an acceptable mix of factual content (with source) and philosophy with left-leaning, personal opinion unable to be checked – be aware!)/sarc

    • no need to borrow from kiwi bank because we as a country can issue as much money as we need to build homes roads hospitals schools as we did back in the 1950s and earlier .We dont need to borrow a single cent as a country .

    • OMG ram raids squeaky, never heard of that ever before, must ba Nationals fault lol
Dairy and petrol station, yes must be starving thieves looking to steal food for the kids back home.
Ohhhh but wait…wait, let’s see what was stolen, my guess is cigarettes as that will prove it’s the price of food that was the cause lol

      • But, but, but tighty not righty, National campaigning to fix ram raids and you swallowed it. Lol hahahaha!

        • And they have fixed it squeaky, ram raids were a weekly occurrence under the criminal cuddlers of Labour-(multiple times a week in some instances)
Now it’s an infrequent pass time for the criminals.
A success by this Govt without a doubt!
          There will never be ‘none’
Just the same as there will never be ‘zero road deaths’
Just the same as ‘zero murders’

  7. Spot on Martyn and Gordon. How these two hypocrites cannot see that this is the behaviour of the current CoC-up is breath-taking and confirms they don’t even share half a brain. This CoC is only for the smug “sorted”, and so riddled with corruption, bribery and lots and lots of lies. Let’s not get onto Seymour or Willis, both horribly lacking in moral fibre and any form of empathy and the extreme weakness of Luxon! And on a similar vein, how about the latest in corruption – the hugely opposed helipad for rich listers – how the hell did this get approved? Yeah it’s all out there every day.

    • So your objecting to the helipad approval, what were the actual objections, what were the IWI/environmental/land use objections?
Were they, as I suspect, just envious poor people hoping to get one over on the rich people…with nothing concrete in their objections except ‘feelz’?
Welcome to the real world Patrize, where things don’t always go your way and luckily enough for all of NZ, ‘feelz’ doesn’t make a legal argument.

      • Hi ‘I’m Right’, clearly I touched a nerve. Let me enlighten you, I am not rich but neither am I poor. I don’t even have a Community Services Card, preferring to pay my way! I grew up in a ‘state’ house in the lovely suburb of Orakei when it was a wonderful place to live not because it was a wealthy suburb in those days, it was friendly and happy. I made a pledge when I was 14 that I would own my own home and I achieved that. What I object to re the heli-pad is the majority, 87% of their neighbours, were against it, mainly for environmental reasons, not personal and had Ali & Anna not had the status/resources they have, it would never have been allowed. Should that not count? What can’t A & A see or not want to see? But what really intgrigues me is why you and the likes of BTF, Ada, Zelda etc. would continually stick your necks out – to be chopped off – when you could happily and safely contribute to the right leaning Kiwi Blog and be so admired for your input. As you know Martyn’s site is mainly Left but he is fair and calls a spade a spade! So let’s agree to differ on this topic – I just hope A & A haven’t tempted fate here!

        • Brilliant Patrize. Sadly that will be just a little too much for tighty not righties miniscule brain to absorb.
Huge donors to the National party get helipad approved, now there’s a surprise. And tighty not righty’s argument was ” were they as I suspect ” doesn’t make an argument.

    • Yes you always astound me Bob1st and that you don’t bug off and do something useful to the world and still your deadly line crops up.
‘So I called up the Captain, “Please bring me my wine”
He said, “We haven’t had that spirit here since 1969”
And still, those voices are calling from far away
Wake you up in the middle of the night just to hear them say’
Natactack are allright, though all bent and twisted.

  8. Hipkins hasn’t ever proved that he’s the man for the job though. The leadership problem needs to be taken care of first.
Without Parker there, will Barbara Edmonds be able to lay the groundwork adequately?
    We need Willy.
Mr. Jackson’s mana and profile have been boosted nicely in the last year. He’s a bit theatrical but he can behave when necessary. He annoys Seymour who is rabid in his envy of the straight talking WJ.
Hipkins should stand aside and not lose any more face or votes.

  9. ” Jeremy Corbyn was taken down by Starmer using a bullshit anti-semitism smear ”

You forgot the establishment and their loudhailer the BBC Bomber.

Corbyn unfortunately did not purge the last of the Blairites New Neo Liberal Labour MP’s and supporters. They got him before he could get them.

I hope Corbyn will have the last laugh.
