Jesus wept, the cruelty of this Government knows no ends…
Abuse in care survivors in line for under a third of government’s $774m package
Less than a third of the government’s $774 million abuse in care redress package will end up in the pockets of survivors.
Figures obtained by RNZ revealed only $205m was earmarked for paying new claims with $52m to go towards topping up previously closed claims.
In defence of the figures, Erica Stanford, the Minister leading the government’s abuse in care response, said redress payments were not the most important thing for some survivors and some of the $774m in this year’s Budget was going towards changing the care system and providing other supports.
However, $92m was for the civil servants who administered the redress funds and another $37m would pay for operating costs like premises and IT.
For every two dollars going to survivors, more than a dollar would be spent on administration.
Cooper Legal principal partner Sonja Cooper, whose firm had acted for hundreds of abuse survivors and victims, said it was a disgrace.
…this disgrace after the State did all it could to destroy the victims they had abused with appalling legal tactics!
I simply do not believe the vast amount of Kiwis have any idea just how involved the NZ State was in not only abusing victims in their care, hiding that abuse, and then using legal tactics to undermine, attack and retraumatize those victims!
The Solicitor-General was in the middle of that process and her apology is simply not enough and the rest of the NZ Media have an obligation to hold her to account…
-
- The report of the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care says of the roughly 655,000 children, young people and adults in care during 1950 to 2019, about 200,000 were abused and even more were neglected.
- The inquiry found evidence of abuse and failures of responsibility ‘everywhere we looked’, including welfare institutions, churches and other religious organisations, some schools, the police and successive governments.
- Solicitor-General Una Jagose was heckled by survivors at the Parliament apology gathering. As the head of the Crown’s legal team, she had been involved in defending the state against abuse claims.
…you can not abuse 250 000 children in State Care, know that they have been abused and then implement legal tactics that use dirty under handed means to undermine those victims.
The State KNEW they had abused these kids, yet did everything to limit accountability.
We should all be ashamed and angry at how little we truly knew about what the State dod to these victims in the first place and then damaged them again.
Also, look at how this Government tried to stop payments to gang members…
Cabinet considered limiting gang members’ abuse in care redress
Cabinet sought advice on limiting redress for gang members and serious criminals, but ultimately chose to treat gangs the same as any other survivor and create a new pathway for serious offenders.
Information obtained by RNZ reveals the government was advised against a “blanket exclusion” because it risks compromising trust in the integrity of the Crown’s response to the Royal Commission into Abuse in care.
The advice described any proposal that would deny serious offenders or gang members access to the redress system would run “directly counter” to the Royal Commission’s reports.
Abuse survivor and former gang member Feke Taito says it is “unconscionable” the government considered leaving them out at all: “It just stunned me, actually.”
…many abused by the state went on to become gang members, this disgusting Government, who had helped abuse these children THEN WANTED TO BAN GANG MEMBERS from being paid for that abuse.
Who have we become as people under this fucking evil Government?
Hang your head in shame.
Hang. Your. Head. In. Shame!

Some people know how to help themselves to funds from the needy.
yep and because its white collar crime its wet bus ticket slap on wrist sentence .That fella will be sitting at home on the lap top planning the next scam and moving the money around in the crypto world .
That’s disgusting.
I thought Stanford was a glimmer of light in the line up of horrible women in the COC but no when you look closely she is as nasty as the rest .How come the victims get 200 million and the perps get 500 million .?
All other recommendations of the enquiry have been binned because that would mean having to be KIND and taking off the hob nail boots being used to kick these people to the curb .
