Labour Party MP Willie Jackson has called David Seymour out this week with a challenge to debate him over ACT’s Treaty Principles Bill Referendum on Waitangi Day 2025.

The Treaty Principles Bill now goes to a 6 month select committee process which David Seymour claims he wants to debate.

The ACT Party Leader has said many times he wants to debate the proposal and has so far participated in one debate that was between David and Iwi Leader Helmut Modlik.

Arguments around the legislation have become furiously hot in the wake of the 84 000 Hikoi, Hana’s Haka in Parliament and Willie Jackson thrown out of the House for calling David Seymour a liar.

David has responded to Willie’s challenge by demanding Willie apologise before he agrees to debate.

That is a very different response from David’s usual swagger and confidence.

Willie Jackson won the Oxford Debating Competition this year and for the first time since this fractured Treaty debate begun, David Seymour doesn’t sound as sure as himself.

It isn’t tenable to argue you are open to debate controversial legislation and then make preconditions on that debate!

The debate should occur, and it should occur on Waitangi Day at Waitangi.

David Seymour has to walk the talk.
