Why killing our cheese brands and exporting live cows is the same economic doom loop

We are restarting live cow exports and dumping our cheese brands, both are examples of the economic doom loop NZ is now in…

Fonterra pushes ahead with sale of Anchor, Mainland brands

NZ will resume live animal exports – to low demand

…We have been led to believe that we are some fancy Dairy producer when the reality is we are a basic bitch exporter of basic bitch milk powder that is used as ingredient filler for the heavily manufactured food industry, 75% of our export is milk powder and the millisecond those big manufacturing industries can remove the cost of growing the cow to make the milk, our economy will risk an enormous implosion.

By killing our brands off, Fonteera is just focusing on us making basic bitch milk powder and the exact same thing has happened to our cows.

We aren’t doing clever cuts or marketing with our meat now, we are just selling the cows off because we are no longer a value added economy, we are just a raw basic product producer.

No where is that more painfully apparent than watching us grow the Trees in NZ, then send the raw logs off with zero value added.

We are economically a 3rd world provider for base line ingredients and products.

This locks us into an economic doom loop where we will be the cheapest producer of the product with zero added value.

  1. Exporting live cows to enable markets to produce their own dairy products and sell their own products in competition with ours can be seen as deliberate sabotage of the New Zealand economy.

  2. Don’t worry – it’ll still be Mainland Cheddar. Only the name will change – Mainland China Cheddar. And you’ll still be able to eat sawdust on your toast for breakfast.

  3. It’s almost like the only brand they are relying on is brand New Zealand. That rapidly vanishing myth of clean and green as fat wankers like Shane Jones and Andrew Hoggard attempt to destroy the countryside, or what’s left of it.

You would think in the consumer products world branding is about 90% of success

    • Wheel. “…branding is about 90% of success.” Correct. This worked for decades in English supermarkets with plain packaged Anchor butter up against eg attractive foil-wrapped Danish butter.

  4. I think National’s Murray McCully tried something like this in the Middle East with live sheep exports, previously banned by Labour. Paid a fortune to them to take them. I seem to recall that his girlfriend dumped him just like those sheep and hitched up with a rather lame duck leftie instead.

  5. Similar shit going on in the kiwi fruit industry where they are growing it overseas in our off season. What could possibly go wrong?

  6. After 50 years of we must “add more value” the current governments destruction of the real NZ economy requires going back down the value chain. Loss of brands, mill closures, nurses leaving. Not even going to bother to train people for the timber industry https://www.nzherald.co.nz/bay-of-plenty-times/news/toi-ohomai-proposes-to-end-timber-machining-apprenticeship-in-rotorua/E55W6NLYXBGMBG2GG6VDCFCJMA/

This government won’t front with water infrastructure money for Auckland forcing Watercare to red sticker 50,000 development sites. They can’t even work with the developer bros. Still it means rents will rise, govt by landlords for landlords in the interests of landlords.

  7. Down hill from here .Export cows are half what they were worth 5 years ago and what will fonterra sell when they have used all the dreamed of cash they get for the brands .Next it will be selling the milk factories and renting them from the new owner .All to prop up the dairy pay out to make farmers feel as though all is good in the hood .
Even air NZ is selling planes and leasing them back to stay afloat after Luxons failed management is coming home to roost big time .8 of the bargain planes he bought are grounded because he went for the cheap toyota option just like he hopes to do with the ferries .

  8. NZ once had a lock on worldwide kiwifruit export supply but industry participants with cash now thinking exported the genetics to Italy and South America. You don’t remain a big player in the dairy export business by giving away the genetic base of your industry to China. The times of milk and honey are past. The Manuka honey industry fucked themselves with competing standards and destroyed their reputation in China. The dairy industry have given their IP to China.

The Kiwi economy needs a new plan.

  9. It is always amazing how many of the posters on this site are so expert in the running of businesses. Most would not be able to run a bath let alone a business successfully.

    • Trevor you can hardly keep your head above bath water. I have been reading you for – some time – and it seems it’s time for you to take an Oates challenge.
“I am just going outside and may be some time”. These were the last words of the Antarctic explorer Captain Lawrence Edward Grace “Titus” Oates (1880–1912). He uttered them prior to walking into a blizzard and certain death….

How can you be of help to we others with cares about the life or death of NZ/AO? We need to feed in helpful ideas for lifting us from the Slough of Despond we are sinking into. You are keen to write here, you could feed us facts and ideas to better the negatives, but much needed are more positive ideas, workable, some pragmatic, to take us into the latter part of the century. We haven’t thousands of years ahead now to footle about. So brace yourself will you or you might as well do an Oates exit for the good of the party.

  10. Fuck the cows! Dairy industry employees? A generous living wage paid to you.
North Island? Sativa. South Island? Indica. Higher, high country? Wool. Dairy factories? Convert to MDMA and LSD Factories. Dairy Industry? Delete. Banking ‘industry’ ? Delete. All mortgages? Delete.

“RFK Jr will cut prescription drugs and increase weed and psychedelics access”
“Trump’s health department pick has expressed distrust of pharmaceuticals and attacked ‘suppression of psychedelics’ ”

Can it get any weirder? I do hope so. Anyone who’s been prescribed Tramadol for pain will know that the evil shit takes control of your mind and body and not in a good way. If you have chronic pain try a puff of cannabis sativa or better still try a tab of MDMA. WARNING ! The mdma you might find in Nu Zillind will almost certainly not be MDMA.
Australia is now able to prescribe MDMA. But not here. Oh fuck no. On a brighter side we have luxon seymour and peters and the morons who voted for them deciding on your health and happiness. yay. Hence synthetic opioid addictions.

  11. Ah, Nu Zild! for at least 5 decades I’ve been hearing complaints that we need to add value to the commodities we produce. True words, grand words. Smarter, better, specialty markets, blah blah blah..
    Every politician promised it.

Yet, we’ve been adding less value with every growing decade, our science and education facilities are basically exporting expertise for no long term return to the nation, they’ve become rent boys to relieve pressure on competition for places in saturated foreign education systems.

Forests, farms, the long-closed factories of distant memory, utilities and infrastructure – whatever, they’re not ours anymore. Hell, that includes a growing section of our housing stock. All gone, gifted to or stolen way back by banksters and more recently, foreign corporations.

90% of New Zealand has already been sold and asset stripped.

Really savvy people, the citizens of NZ. Ask them, they’ll tell you so.

    • Yep I spent 4o years in manufacturing which shrank each year and is now on life support .Before that I was in the dairy industry and the payout today would need to be $14 per kg to equal what it was then .That tells me we are going backwards and have been doing so for years .

  12. Juoseph and Gordon W thoughtful and stark facts. Take cottonwool from ears, clean glass lens and we will be closer to our reality than 80% of Kiwis??
