The 3 Buck Chuck

Up to 2000 people could lose jobs over school lunch changes

Up to 2000 people could lose their jobs as a result of the government’s change to the school lunchesfunding model.

Currently up to 156 school lunch suppliers made up of businesses and local trusts feed their school communities under the Ka Ora, Ka Ako healthy lunches programme.

The Ministry of Education says 75 of those provider contracts will end on 24 December after a decision to partner with the School Lunch Collective – run by international company Compass Group.

One supplier, Trust House, will have to let go all 47 people employed to run the programme because it was blindsided by the decision and thought its contracts had been extended to 2026.

As The Daily Blog pointed out right from the beginning, the real story here was always the corporate welfare ACT was prepared to give an enormous corporation with a terrible reputation for food quality at the cost of local suppliers…

Exactly.

The food is now processed shit from corporations with appalling track record in food service provision…

We know that the largest school lunch providers, Libelle and Compass, have lost significant numbers of schools in the past year, due to performance issues – with schools opting to go with alternative providers.

…plus we are killing off 75 local food suppliers at a time when we have rising unemployment…

‘Massive blow’: 75 suppliers lose school lunch contracts

Thousands of jobs are on the line as 75 suppliers will lose their school lunch contracts at the end of the year.A consortium led by global catering giant Compass Group won the contract to deliver free school lunches to 176,000 students under a new model. The consortium, which includes Libelle and Gilmours, will deliver lunches or ingredients to schools at $3 a pop, down from up to $8.69 under the current model.Suppliers who have missed out on the contract say the new model is a “massive blow” to their business.

…which in turn kills off the local element of the school food programme, the ability for parents to help out and become engaged, the use of local farms and food grown at school as part of the process.

You know, all the community element that makes this programme so important.

What we have had replaced is shit food from corporations with shit records at providing food.

David Seymour has managed to take a great policy and fuck it up.

The greatest audacity here?

We’ve had to cut these food programmes because this Government needed $2.9billion for Landlords tax loopholes.

We took out of the mouth of children to put into the pockets of the rich.

Our children, living in a land of milk and honey, deserve better than this!

  1. Seymour is nothing more than a vandal…

Tony Ryall, for National, did the same thing when he cancelled Labour’s healthy foods in schools programme and reintroduced pies, chips, coke and cakes saying that Labour’s policy was ‘nanny state’.

The 3 buck up-chuck is just pig slop food with 2 scoops of rice…a well known food for containing worrisome levels of inorganic arsenic which poses health risks to people who eat rice every day.
I wouldn’t be surpised if it’s full of msg as well to try and give it some flavour.
Where are the nutritionists breakdown analysis on this?

Food is fuel for the mind the body and the soul..Seymours up – chuck muck fails on all 3…

The children have been eating locally sourced, and prepared, nutritionally balanced meals based around fresh vegetables and fruit.

You fuel a body with crap food you get a crap outcome.

    Seymore say he’s saved money???…Bollocks!!
    No… he hasn’t.

The quid pro quo shows that 100’s of small businesses, many in small towns, have now been forced to close…not only will no taxes will be coming from them anymore but the government will be paying out the unemployment benefit….not to mention the mental health of all those people now without work…in all a major cost!!

Yet another false economy by the Coalition of Chaos.

Seymour thinks he’s clever…he’s not!..he’s just a plain straight out incoherent delusional one dimensional egomaniac and should be nowhere near the N.Z. political system…a dumb dangerous dweeb…the worst of everything, and that’s bad for New Zealand.

    Stupid is as stupid does.

    • You do not address why the (possibly hopeless) parents need a hand out to fulfil the most basic parental duty. Have a kid, feed it. Our Stone Age ancestors got this very basic concept.

      • School lunches are standard practice in all 1st world countries . … U.S.A, U.K, Germany, France, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Canada, Australia, Singapore…etc. etc. etc..

All these countries worked out long ago the benefits that come from all children being fed proper nutritious food daily…result ..heather, smarter, more focused kids.

Not every has the same upbringing and families get into strive for many and varied reasons.
The cost of housing and rents in N.Z are ridiculously astronomical and has far out stripped take home wages as have many other costs .
People who were coping just fine paying their bills and feeding their families have, for no reason of their own , had the rug pulled out from underneath them by governments who have allowed our property market to become a worldwide casino…nobody except the few and the silver spooners can keep pace with those rises.

Hence the necessity to make sure all the children are feed daily… It’s just basic commonsense!

  2. Compass are a corporation with a history of doing shit things ,,, and providing foul food.

    https://corporatewatch.org/broken-compass-the-scandals-of-compass-group/

,,,, that the NActFist govt should destroy worthwhile local employment and terminate the worthwhile jobs that provide decent food for New Zealands kids ,, and does so in favor of this international rat-bag of a corporation tells you just how rotten they all are.

Act in particular are nasty ideologues working in the interests of a corrupt ‘corporate system’ …..

So Garbage in garbage out, ;particularly with the no-moral-compass rats.
… “Meanwhile, Compass has also been in the spotlight in recent weeks after protests about the quality of the food that it has supplied to hospitals in Otago and Southland.”…. https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/302846/questions-over-compass%27-tax-payments

  3. The $8.69 was far too high to feed a child lunch though $3 seems cheap .I will be interested to see how well they are received. The pricing and supply should be the main criteria not local jobs . As a majority of teachers are from the left their opinion will be very biased against any moves by National

    • Last week you said you could do lunch for $2 a day .I remember you have a chat with Uncle Tom around that figure .How ever its good to see you have raised your expectations of what is required and the likely cost .Soon you will be agreeing that it cant be done and what they are serving is swill .

      • Not wishing to defend Trevor because I don’t know what or who the poster is, but you can buy my daily lunch of Oak beans on toast for less than $3 a day. I like it but I accept beggars who want to choose might not. I like the same thing but the poor might be more picky.

    • And your obvious bias of the left and teachers. Sadly you were going great up until your last sentence although locals having jobs doesn’t appear to be high on your agenda and the exact reason the politicians of USA are fighting for their locals.

    • Add the cost of Job Seekers benefit to the cost of the meals over the first year Trevor. Minimum of $600k per week.
You seem to have changed your tune a little. Last week you reckoned you could do a $2 lunch. Has inflation risen under your government.

      • My $2 meal was for me .I did not cost in transport or staff to serve it . As I say let’s wait and see what is served and how well it works .
fringinn next post does make some good points but it is all supposition as to how it will work but I stand by my call that $8.69 was over the top.

  4. Oh it gets worse for schools. Take an average school of say 350 students.
First off you will need a professional combi oven there’s 12-14k for a start, add in the average installation cost of 3-5 k depending on plumbing and if you have 3 phase power.
A food control plan will need to be registered with the authorities and all the associated compliance as well as staff training and documentation, good luck with that. I’m curious at what is the backup plan if the food is recalled?
At least 2 staff will be required for reheating and up to 4 for serving the food with the associated costs of holding the hot food at the legal temperature, throw in the additional costs of disposable containers for serving and it soon become uneconomical for schools to provide this “Service”
My prediction is within a year schools will refuse to provide free meals due to the horrendous costs and boom! school lunches will no longer exist.
With 35 years in Hospo there is no way in hell this is feasible, never mind providing food at the cost they claim. I wouldn’t feed it to my dog.

  5. corporate goon-ery at it’s finest. What sort of loser gets their jollies on this chump change? Seymour is the worst sort of human being.

  6. We were having a wee laugh on who could correctly identify the substances in each tray. I don’t know if I’d be paying $3 for one.

  7. Just like how local car assembly was destroyed for no good reason, tens of thousands of good jobs gone to save (supposedly) a full TWO PERCENT on new car prices.

    • The whinging might be pathetic but well fed, healthy, respected people do not need to form terrorist groups to rise up against the oppressor.
The way we are going Gaza is a distinct possibility with our current government especially if they become emboldened by a Trump win next week. They will think they can do what he is promising to do.
