Ngāti Toa leader on why he wants a debate with David Seymour
The chief executive of Ngāti Toa agrees with David Seymour that a national debate is needed on the place of Te Tiriti o Waitangi – the Treaty of Waitangi – in modern Aotearoa – but says it needs to be a two-way discussion.
Treaty of Waitangi debate on as David Seymour takes up Ngāti Toa leader Helmut Modlik’s challenge
-
- Billed as Te Tautohe Tiriti – Te Tiriti o Waitangi Debate, Ngāti Toa Rangatira leader Helmut Modlik will square off against ACT leader David Seymour next week.
- Modlik challenged Seymour to debate the role of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in the 21st century back in August, after watching Seymour defend his Treaty Principles Bill.
- The bill would define the principles of the Treaty to what ACT says was actually written and signed in 1840 – the same rights and duties for all New Zealanders.
Helmut told David, anytime, anywhere, any place and David has agreed and said, “The Working Group“.
That’s right folks, The Working Group is proud to announce that we will be hosting the Iwi vs David Seymour Treaty Debate, 8pm October 8th, live-streamed on Rova, Youtube, Facebook, Tictok, Twitter, The Daily Blog AND simulcast live on Sky TV Channel 83 and Waatea Radio!
The Working Group is New Zealand’s number 1 weekly political podcast that is NOT funded by NZ on Air!
The Working Group is the only place in New Zealand media where a Marxist and Libertarian argue each week over politics with a range of guests far outside the hollow little echo chambers of the mainstream political panels.
The Working Group practises free speech while the Free Speech Union grandstand on it!
The Working Group has the debate while the woke middle class activists seek only to cancel!
The Working Group brought you more live-streamed election debates than any other news organisation!
The Working Group outrages the feral Qanon Racist Right AND the humourless woke cancel mobs.
We believe passionately at The Working Group in more debate, not less of it!
We demand the debate, we don’t shy away from it.
We believe a well functioning democracy requires more debate outside the Gatekeepers narrative and celebrate adults being able to engage with big ideas.
The debate must be passionate because the issues are passionate, but after the furious words and argument, we must as citizens shake hands and continue the debate because that’s the way we change minds and win support in a liberal progressive democracy.

Not one red cent from NZ on Air!
Well done Martyn. Ironically I feel that you’d provide more balance to this debate than any of the MSN news channels.
Quite the coup
Walk over to seymour, laugh in his rat face then play an old mickey mouse cartoon. You’ll be better informed for it.
( I mean, really. david seymour is an actual thing to be debated with. I can’t quite get my head around that. The bold nobody who put jonky’s idiot son on twerk-twerk tee vee. The funny little Mr Zero who’s warped from a distant planet to get to where it is. What the fuck does that say about you and you. Are you that stupid? How alarming. )
1. I hope Modlik speaks Te Reo a lot and exposes Seymours lack of Te Reo
2. I hope Modlik uses the word Invasion a lot.
3. I hope Modlik asks Seymour when the White court is going to retrospectively
try George Grey Queen Victoria the British and NZ Governments for war crimes and theft.
4. I hope Modlik asks Seymour when the Pakeha are going to pay the other 99% of what
they owe for their invasion, war crimes and theft.
I really don’t know what to expect from this debate.
Something worrys me about this acceptance by Seymour to debate so publically.
Seymour must be confident as he would not risk his own, his party or the right wings reputation.
But Modlik seems confident too.
Split decision ,unanimous decision or TKO?
What is the format? Is there a facilitator or sent in questions or what?
Martyn – Very cool…it will be insightful on how the groups think about this issue
Seymour is slick, clever and experienced. He is also media savvy, in his element. IF he gets shellacked, obvious to even his stauchest supporters, or just draws the debate he’s toast. His Te Tiriti Bill seen as alt-right provocation, dropped as counter productive
Conversely if he demonstrates a skillful, populist, his Tucker Carlson moment he’ll still be seen by the New Zealand centrist voter as the voice of white grievance politics.
