Christopher Luxon vilified for his wealth and apartment sale – Barry Soper
The incumbent Prime Minister has been vilified for his wealth and more so because it’s allowed him to own seven properties. Surely if he didn’t, after earning several million bucks a year in previous chief executive roles, there would be a reason to question his financial acumen.
The fact he took a salary drop the equivalent of what many people could hope to earn in a lifetime is surely a reason for praise. What it does show is that he sees the country as more important than the cash.
But that doesn’t stop some in the media from painting him as a money-grubber. State television breathlessly told us he made $200,000 after four years by buying and recently selling his apartment opposite Parliament.
Whenever some rich prick opines some privileged bullshit, those who criticise that privileged bullshit always get called ‘envious’.
This whole shtick that people who can’t stand rich prick arseholes spouting privileged bullshit are part of the ‘politics of envy’ is total garbage.
I don’t give a shit how rich Luxon is, it’s his “I’m rich and I’m sorted’ arrogance that he has used to defend making an enormous capital gain that he pushed through when he gained power that is worthy of criticism.
It’s his corruption of process, his smug certitude and his ‘fuck you I’m rich’ vibe from a fundamentalist Christian that is vomit inducing.
What a ZB Troll like Soaper is really channeling here by defending Luxon is the Politics of Pride. His fawning defence of Luxon tells us more about Bazza and his sad burnt out values than any genuine critique of Luxon’s detractors.
No one is vilifying him for being rich, we are vilifying him for being a smug, arrogant, hypercritical Christian arsehole Bazza and your deplorable sycophancy is little more than lube for an orgy of greed.
Why isn’t Bazza behind the Herald Paywall so none of us have to read his cretinous opinion?
Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.
There are very wealthy people in NZ who are just the bloke next door and dont flaunt that wealth at every opportunity.I had an uncle who fitted that type who was a millionaire several times over and would dwarf Luxons wealth several times over .He could buy and sell all Luxons property before breakfast .But if you did not know him upon meeting him you you would think he was just some old coot living on a small life style block on the edge of town who played golf on a friday with his mates .One would not realise he had large government departments and major business as his tenants in his property port folio .That is the difference between real humans and parasites like the skin head gang leader .
Yes …exactly…and yet boozy old, (must be nearly 80), social climbing dinosaurs like Soper are so shallow, and so easily impressed by money, and the likes of braggarts like Luxon and Hosking, who flaunt it at every opportunity, springs to mind three words when describing all of them……crass, boorish, classless!
Making out that Luxon gave up his overpaid cushy government controlled monopoly Air N.Z job, and sacrificed his future earnings by receiving less income, so he could valiantly help save the country, is….. laughable.
Gordon, I rarely meet richie-rich self-centred types. I remember two during my Primary years in the 70s and this couple now I’m going all out for to sell their home. Kiwis with money are always mostly egalitarian in their manners. I don’t like big businessmen for different reasons. They don’t know how to treat employees!
Have occasionally wondered if those whose opinions go behind a paywall are really too happy about it. Inevitably they lose a lot of attention by being inaccessible.
There must be many people who, like me, might read their opinions if I could. But I’m not going to subscribe so as to do so. Their opinions aren’t really of much interest to me.
I can go to weird kiwiblog and get the gist of their opinions, if I want to be masochistic.
Soapy Soper must have a special deal to keep his stuff visible. The others are going to want to know how he got it.
Soapy soaps up for Luxon thats how he does it and remember the herald and ZB are right wing owned .
Gordon, the right wing trolls on this site will never admit to that, ever!
Journalism works like this:
Newspapers, Commercial radio, television = media.
Media gets its income from advertising, sponsorship, donations.
Therefore media is the servant of those who finance it.
As obedient servants media publishes that which pleases its masters who continue to pay its wages.
Read Walter Lippman’s ‘Public Opinion’ (influenced Joseph Goebbels) and Chomsky and Herman’s ‘Manufacturing Consent’
100% on the button MB. Yeah yawn the usual ‘politics of envy’ what a lazy argument, Soaper is a complete dickhead and you could not be more accurate in your description of Luxon. Thank God someone is saying it like it is.
Leader s have to have empathy. So he should say. Yes I am Rich and own lots of property. But as a party leader I understand u need to bring in regulations to ensure rents don’t go up and Landlord s must maintain houses to high standards.
And we must bring in polices that make it affordable for first home buyers.
bwah hahaha – great satire
I DGAF about empathy – I want fuckin equity. Give me a machine over a human – every day.
Soper is an absolute knob. Remember when he stormed out of a press conference because others were given time before him. He was concerned about his deadline. If he was that important his paper would hold up the presses for a few minutes. But this was one of Jacindas press conferences at the same time as they usually were. But he tried to make a crybaby point and ended up looking just like one.
Most of the Herald so called reporters are opinion piece writer’s funded by NatActNZF and their supporters.
I challenged one of these so called reporters last week regarding an article she wrote which included in my opinion some untruths and misrepresentation regarding the repealing of the mining ban.
She has not even had the courtesy to acknowledge my challenge or had the courage to try and justify her position.
Trumpism on display in NZ
“The fact he took a salary drop the equivalent of what many people could hope to earn in a lifetime is surely a reason for praise. What it does show is that he sees the country as more important than the cash.”
Is Soper so stupid that he only has one answer for this and a completely illogical one. Luxon is a plant – just like Key was and Roger Douglas was – are New Zealanders so stupid they actually believe statements like the above.
Luxon (the puppet) is there to pick winners and losers.
The puppeteers (private capital) want the winners (private capitalists) to get rich, and the losers (tax payers) to pay for it.
Look, in capitalist society there will inevitably be asset and cash rich people. A handful of them may be nice enough, a friend of mine worked a bit for Apple’s Steve Jobs then designer Jonny Ives, he handed out iPods like confetti to all he met and was most pleasant in Hawaii. Most capitalists I have met, and have met a few over many years of union negotiations etc. are graspers whose main source of exercise is climbing over or back stabbing others. Vast wealth is either inherited, bludged from wage workers and the world’s natural finite resources…or via speculative finance capital and even Bitcoin.
The thing is do we want people that depend on the exploitation of other peoples physical and intellectual labour in charge of our country in a political sense?
Logic would say not because they are selfish fuckers that do not like to share. The Panama Papers showed what Sirkey was up to with his offshore trust scam. Peter Thiel made millions on a share buy back clause in Steven Joyce’s venture capital scam funded by NZ taxpayers. Shiny bonce Luxon deserves a good towelling because he is not as bright as he thinks he is, has little empathy for “losers and bottom feeders” and is running this country down at every level.
Entitled BS, like the 35 pages of elitist claptrap the Herald published yesterday.
I have said it so often on this site I get nose bleeds.
Soper is a right wing stooge. The day he came out and admitted he missed his Friday night drinks sessions with Key at the beehive was the day Soper and his mail order bride should have been put behind a paywall if not taken off the media platform altogether. He is biased, full stop.
NZ’s media is so right wing they make Trump look sane and Trump has only ever been a reality TV mogul, clueless on politics and full of himself. Even today it has been evidenced that Trump described Pence as being “to honest”. Think about that comment in a cryptic sense. Trump is dishonest and he is better than Soper and the National party. Soper is a schmuck.
“clueless on politics and full of himself”
Look in a mirror you cretin
I’m a scholar in politics and quite rightly full of myself. Listen and learn young one on a junglegym.
Barry Soper is such an idiot he should marry someone like Heather DPA
There’s only a 33 year age gap…eeewww!
I’m 40 and I married a 7 year old?
What amuses me about Soper, is that he doesn’t have too flash a history with things like the treatment of ppl (women in partic)
He’s lucky he’s found the perfect specimen for a little wifey.
Daddy figure complexes, ego boosters, et al.
Good luck to the pair of them
Soper is another one of the National party’s pimps.
He has never subscribed to that little thing in journalism around objectivity.
Its time he began the last stage of his existence and do what all the others like him would love to do…
Become a list MP for the National party.
” the ‘politics of envy’ is total garbage.”
Of course it is. There are two complementary explanations for it:
a.) it’s a cynical attempt to make people with actual moral principles look bad in some way
b.) people on the right are so screwed up that they genuinely mis-identify moral principles as envy. This mistake would be understandable: envy is simply frustrated greed, and right wingers understand that emotion very well. What they can’t understand is someone believing that no-one should be this rich including themseves because it is always underserved and terrible for our society and democracy because wealth translates into political power.
Brilliant AB and 100% factual.
