I noted recently that Stuff had expanded their gated community paywall across their laptop accessible website but had left it off the mobile accessible version, well, they have it on the mobile accessible site as well now.
I think this is a terrible blunder by a desperate Stuff.
A lot of people don’t like Stuff for its perceived wokeness and asking people who don’t necessarily trust you for even their email address is an intimacy too far.
I suspect there will be less people reading their news as many will refuse to give Stuff even an email address.
This gated community paywall will only add to a deterioration in the NZ media landscape and lower the availability of journalism.
The most recent leaked Talbot Poll was put behind this gated community paywall and had no effect whatsoever on challenging perspectives generated by Roy Morgan + TU Polls.
The Daily Blog will never, ever, ever be behind a Paywall.
We believe passionately that Paywalls create two classes of information citizen, those with the money to read what is going on and those who don’t have the money and so don’t see it.
At The Daily Blog we believe passionately that you the citizen should have access to Fourth Estate Journalism that isn’t locked behind a Paywall, what is the point of a Guard Dog for Democracy if it’s only locked behind a wall?
We stand with the ordinary average citizen who doesn’t have the money for weekly Paywall subscriptions. We will never be behind a paywall, but we will occasionally pass the plate around to keep us doing what we do.
Our pledge to you as New Zealanders and our pledge to Fourth Estate Journalism is that we will never go behind a Paywall.
You as Citizens in a liberal progressive Democracy deserve better than a User Pays Fourth Estate.
Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.
Goodbye Stuff – you won’t be missed.
I never saw the need to read about what yoghurt was best for healthy hair growth, or the latest sex trend in Hollywood.
Martyn – My gut feeling is that many of today’s media outlets will be gone by 2030…including Stuff…the TDB will continue.
‘…the TDB will continue.’
Like Stonehenge – a mysterious relict that no-one is sure what it was constructed for…
Well that’s a very satisfactory outcome Ada.
Will you be there to read it too? Good things should be enabled. Does that apply to you?
Yes I get fucked off with those popups as well .Christ there is 20 bloody adds on each page surely they are making enough money from those .And what happened to all the opinion writers they once had ? In general their standards of real reporting has gone down the shit shute with next to no investigating at depth any thing this government has or is doing .Where is the uproar about the way they are treating teachers and not funding new or upgrading existing schools .There is none because the teachers and the media are closet right wing arse holes and when the government changes again and teachers take to the streets demanding better pay and conditions I hope the government sools the dogs onto them fires the whole bloody lot of them .Currently they are justt bending over and taking it where the sun dont shine and asking for more and faster .
If you use a decent browser on mobile, like Brave, you shouldn’t see these (or many other) ads.
Please note computer screen designers – white lettering on pale coloured backing is hard to read, even if you make the letters bigger – black on light, white, yellow, on dark. Orange may be in fashion but it isn’t easily readable.
Why would I pay for stuff. When I can read all the same stories on RNZ.
