The most famous futurist in the world is Ray Kurzweil, whom I’ve had the privilege of meeting at the A360 futurism conference in Los Angeles. Currently the Director of Engineering at Google, Kurzweil has invented groundbreaking technologies such as Optical Character Recognition, the world’s first electronic keyboard, and the first speech recognition software. He is also a pioneer in the field of artificial intelligence (AI).
Kurzweil is renowned for his predictions about the future of technology, particularly his theory of “The Singularity”—a point where AI surpasses human intelligence, leading to rapid, uncontrollable, and irreversible technological growth. His predictions have sparked fascination and debate among technologists, academics, and the general public.
A few years ago, many viewed Kurzweil’s prediction of the singularity occurring around 2030 as unrealistic. However, with the advent of highly intelligent Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, which can answer sophisticated questions in natural language, his prediction now seems not just likely but probable, and imminent. Elon Musk recently predicted that a super-intelligent AI might emerge around 2025 or 2026.
During one of my trips to the USA, I encountered a billboard that said, “Call this number and talk to me to see how you could save money on your call center.” The call was answered by an AI that seemed human, could discuss various topics, and keep the conversation on point—powered by ChatGPT. Such “magical” level machine intelligence is becoming increasingly common.
In the near future, Apple will release iOS 18, which will integrate AI throughout the operating system. Soon, iPhone users will have intelligent personal assistants capable of tasks like purchasing tickets or changing travel plans. This is not fantasy; it is imminent.
Currently, AI functions as a helpful chatbot. Within a year, it will evolve into a more autonomous entity, akin to a useful employee or friend. Once AI can outperform a human AI researcher, it will continuously improve itself. At that point, it might only be months, weeks, or even days before AI intelligence surpasses human comprehension.
AI already exceeds human capabilities in specific areas such as Chess and Go. Computers are now making strides in art and music composition, and more records will likely fall.
It is clear that advanced AI is arriving soon. The critical question for individuals, businesses, and employees is, “Are you ready?”
While it’s uncertain which jobs AI will replace, one thing is evident: A human using AI will ALWAYS outperform a human not using AI.
Prepare for the wave! We are living in the most exciting time in human history.

We limit human reproduction to those who can pay for their own lifestyles now. Seriously the world right now needs billions fewer people from countries that add nothing to human progress. And fewer in countries that offer generous welfare that currently produce no net benefit.
Fortunately, we should see a mass reduction in the next 25 years. Buckle up, it’s going to be rough.

This is not about whether we are ready for this. This is about whom controls it and its purpose overall. If AI leads to the loss of more jobs than it ever creates then AI is obviously not in the interests of, we the people! Remember, the people are not clamoring for this, the powerful – those with the money to develop technology and to possess the ear of government – they are leading this charge. And if we look at the state of the world today, and for the last 40 odd years at least, this combination of big money interests and government, they have done sweet stuff all for the interests of we, the people!

And where might the electricity needed come from in this futuristic order? Hopefully not carbon based. Renewables? Nuclear? Hydrogen?
Might have to bite the bullet and go nuclear.

Faced with another game of solitaire it might decide it’s mind is pointless and destroy its own charging port and battery.
To address the effects of AI singularity, we need to consider both benefits and dangers. The ultimate benefits might include unprecedented advancements in technology, health, and productivity, potentially solving complex global issues. However, dangers could involve loss of control over AI systems, ethical concerns, and exacerbated inequality.
As for displaced workers, one solution is to invest in education and retraining programs to help people transition into new roles. This can be complemented by policies ensuring a safety net and support systems for those affected. How do you envision the balance between technological advancement and managing these societal impacts?
Balancing this disparity requires deliberate policies and interventions. Ensuring broad access to the benefits of AI can be achieved through progressive taxation on tech giants, investing in universal basic income, and supporting workforce retraining programs. Additionally, creating regulations that promote fair distribution of AI’s benefits can help mitigate inequality. It’s crucial to address these issues proactively to prevent a widening gap between the beneficiaries and those bearing the costs.
The question of copyright or IP rights is not addressed by AI. Currently it uses freely available sources (including what is in your personal cloud storage container). With the advent of NAS and personal storage containers to protect IP and personal information. That information that AI needs to learn from is getting more and more restricted.
Soon it will only feed on it’s own (erroneous at times) information data.
Being skilled in running CNC machines, I know we are a million miles away from generating AI code to run multi million dollar machines (if ever – for each machine manufacturer uses different codes (M and G codes for a Haas or an Okuma differ when creating macros plus in their conversational languages) Good luck getting both the machine manufacturers and software vendors (Mastercam, etc.) to release their proprietor code for AI to learn from.
Would anyone entrust their multi million dollar machines to AI generated code? No.
We see in the engineering industry the calculating fields well hidden behind an air gap to protect not only the IP but also potential future litigation.
AI not only needs to deal with IP rights but also how to “sign off” on verifiable information as being correct. In case of failures who to sue or hold to account. Some human will need to pen their signature on say a bridge build and will only use propriety software and their education/knowledge to sign the document that the bridge is sound. AI (or rather IA – Intelligent automation) could be used in design but never in verification.
We are well on the way to IA (intelligent automation – which changing your ticket is) to full AI that can think to change your ticket due to recognising a conflict in your diary.
The AI “wave” is being pushed by AI pretend companies to get gullible people (including your Kiwisaver investors) to invest in their ponzi schemes. AI will fall over due to new learning data not going online and ponzi scheme operators (and yes a large organisation may have an internal AI (IA) software package but it requires huge storage plus electricity and cooling infrastructure.

AI is just a tool at the end of the day. Where it seems to work best is speeding up otherwise menial and repetitive tasks.
My question is how class left politics will relate to AI–because while technology has always developed somewhat independently of capitalist ownership and research funding, the current AI rush seems majorly corporate based. Capital has long been for owners and shareholders not the world at large.
If people are going to become largely superfluous Basic Incomes and free public services and housing are going to be right in the frame. Contradictions abound because capital surely needs customers…sacked and depressed proles do not make great consumers…or perhaps humanity is finally about to disappear up its own rear end and leave Earth to robots and software.
Cosmos, the Australian science magazine recently fired all of its independent contractors, much of its editorial staff, and started using AI to write columns and articles. It did not go well. Personally, I think that science fiction writers have a better track record on what happens in the future than so-called futurists.

Computer’s already have enough control so I for one do not want to see them getting any more. 3 weeks ago the hard drive on my computer died and while our local pbt put a new hard drive in it they were unable to recover any data. Since it was only a few years old I still had the old one in the garage so I got most of what I need from it to get the accounts sorted. I then discovered that as I put files across the new computer said that I needed to buy more storage on one drive (?) as pbt had recommended I upgrade to windows 11. I decided that Bill Gates already has enough money so I was not going to support him and turn one drive off.
Let me know when AI can repair my tumble dryer.

More seriously some jobs will obviously be more vulnerable than others, and the most vulnerable are lawyers and accountants. They’re based on words and numbers, both of which large language models eat for breakfast. A few years ago an early version produced by IBM could do legal searches better and faster than a human and searches are about 70% of billable hours in large corporate law firms. That’s a lot of cream denied from the fat cats.
