Boot camp for youth offenders: First teens selected to take part in pilot programme
The 10 young offenders who will take part in the Government’s boot camp pilothave been selected and will begin a 12-month trial from July 29.
The 10 teenagers have been chosen from those already in the country’s youth justice residences who had been convicted of two crimes with a sentence of at least 10 years – the criteria for the young serious offender category the Government is seeking to write into legislation.
Children’s Minister Karen Chhour remains unaware of the finer details of the pilot, despite her and the Government coming under persistent questioning for information.
The total confusion over what these 10 kids we are sending to the Military Boot camps are actually going to do is deeply embarrassing.
The PM has admitted he doesn’t care of the Boot Camps don’t work meaning the $5million they have wasted on this is nothing short of a political virtue signal.
Alongside this we have the military who don’t want anything ti do with this.
We are spending $500 000 one each of these kids, shouldn’t we be spending that on the actual facilities and current infrastructure for these kids rather than pointlessly spending $5million  to make the Rights reactionary and nary voting base feel good.
Why are the bullshit feelings of right wingers so important now?
I would rather money was spent looking at a way of solving youth crime than on plans for a no go cycle bridge.
So it’s ok to waste money when it’s wasting it on youth crime? A waste of money is just that. Full stop.
Trevor Of course money should be spent on solving youth crime. The implications of not doing so are both tragic and horrific, but it should not be an either/or choice.
We can have both just as soon as people like you, with next to fuck all like me, stop noshing the bollocks of the money men in charge in the small hope you’ll get a pat on the head trickle down, and not completely arse fucked like those worse off.
Saw a story on stuff yesterday where a group in Hamilton is dealing with over a thousand youth with no funding from the government .They have invited government to visit and see what they are doing .Potaka lives right on their door step so he could easily pop in for a look and a chat .
I would suggest the government is not keen because it is a Maori run set up and is having the results everyone wants .The 5 mil might be better invested nation wide setting up the same program in every town in the country .500K is bloody silly money when the end result will be fitter and smarter offenders going foward .Maybe 1 kid of the ten will be turned in a different direction when this other program may well be turning 800 in another direction for a pitance .
Dealing with youth not in the system – that is youth who haven’t gotten 10 year sentences for I can’t even imagine what crimes.
So sure, always worth looking at anything that gets results – but I can’t see how it applies here.
Gordon but the money is probably going on their mates’ companies.
like the 2.9 billion in tax cuts you mean
I can’t imagine what a youth offender would have to do to get a 10 year sentence, given adult rapists get home detention. Did these kids slaughter entire villages or something?
yep and a person who steals by fraud gets home detention because she has a kid while another one gets 2 years jail for the same offence but only stole 33% of the amount of the first offender .Perhaps the second offender was brown so jail is given to keep the brown numbers up
not hard to confuse this minister she is as thick as two short planks
These bootcamps are a waste of money it not gonna reduce youth offending unless there is something meaningful is established to the offender after being released. Majority of these offenders will be Maori and will continue to commit crimes against their own communities unless there is meaningful interventions. Playing the race card for votes isn’t the meaningful intervention these future NZers need at their young vulnerable age.
Five naughty kids – five hundred grand.
Hope those troubled souls find it within themselves to plan for the future when they get out.
Should be plenty of time to commit to memory all the faces and car reggos of the ‘trainers’.
ACT have no bloody idea.
I know I’ve been there
The only interest ACT has in kids is in how they can pull them behind the sheds at the surf club out of anyone’s view.
Martyn – if it gets those kids away from dangerous living conditions, and teaches them actual useful life skills, like reading, writing, basic numeracy, cooking – then great! But $500,000 seems very high.
nothing to do with penal reform at all, just red meat for their ignorant and vengeful demographic
Maybe Seymoure can just tik tock them daily that will put them on the path to crime faster
