Dozens killed across Gaza as Israel’s war enters 10th month
Israel carries out more deadly air strikes across the Gaza Strip amid fresh efforts to reach a truce. At least 27 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli strikes across Gaza, marking another grim day as the war on the besieged territory enters its 10th month. One of the attacks since dawn on Sunday targeted a school sheltering displaced people west of Gaza city, killing at least four Palestinians. In central Gaza, the Israeli army struck a residential building in the al-Zawayda area, killing six people. The Palestine Red Crescent Society said the dead included two children. The killings came a day after the targeting of a United Nations-run school for displaced Palestinians, in which at least 16 people were killed and dozens wounded. Paramedics said six other Palestinians were killed in a strike on another house in Gaza City. Israeli jets also targeted a group of civilians on the city’s Street 8 in the Sabra neighbourhood, killing at least two people.
Thousands of dead bodies still missing under the rubble, with no international action
Palestinian Territory – More than 10,000 Palestinian men and women are missing under the rubble in the Gaza Strip, with no way to recover them or properly bury their remains, in a blatant violation of international law amid total international inaction to assist in their retrieval. Recovering the bodies of the victims of Israel’s nearly ten months of deadly and destructive military attacks on civilians will be extremely difficult, given the lack of heavy machinery and equipment for civil defense crews and the difficulty of their work. Furthermore, the Israeli army has deliberately and methodically targeted and destroyed this machinery and equipment, while preventing any replacement equipment entry to the Gaza Strip. In addition to intentionally using weapons with enormous destructive power that leave tons of rubble that impede the removal and recovery of bodies from underneath, Israel has a pattern of systematic operations to prevent and obstruct the recovery of victims and missing persons from under the rubble, as documented by Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor. These operations include targeting civil defence crews, rescue teams, and families trying to recover the bodies of victims, as well as preventing the entry of fuel necessary to operate what remains of the heavy machinery and preventing the entry of equipment.
Israel bombs UNRWA school as Gaza war crosses nine-month mark
Israel has now been attacking and killing Palestinians in Gaza for nine months. The latest assault was on an UNRWA-run school in a refugee camp where thousands of forcibly displaced people were sheltering.
Israel is besieging Gaza’s wounded and sick, preventing their ability to travel for treatment
The international community must effectively pressure Israel to open the border crossings and allow sick and injured people to leave the Gaza Strip for treatment. Thousands of sick and injured people face certain death as they are unable to receive treatment in the Strip amid the destruction or travel elsewhere, due to Israel’s systematic targeting of the region’s health sector—which has rendered most of its components inoperable—and the strict Israeli siege. Nine months into its genocidal war against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, Israel still besieges the sick and injured, preventing them from leaving the Strip to receive medical treatment, despite having destroyed or rendered most of the region’s hospitals inoperable. As a result, more than 26,000 sick and injured individuals who require immediate external referrals for life-saving care will die, and thousands more will have to wait to travel to finish their treatment or obtain critical medical and rehabilitation services that are unavailable in the Strip. Over 12,000 wounded people trapped in the Gaza Strip still require urgent medical attention to survive. In addition, 14,000 patients, of whom 10,000 suffer from cancer or other serious diseases, are threatened with imminent death if they do not travel for treatment.
No security for Israel without peace
Israel’s obstinancy has awoken atrocious forces in Zionist politics, unwilling to accept anything but the erasure of Palestine, writes Nikolaos van Dam. Many Israelis, including their ministers, consider the Palestinians as “human animals” and as Untermenschen or subhumans. Yet, after decades of mistreatment and ruthless suppression of the Palestinians, the Israelis were surprised that on October 7, 2023, they were confronted with a counterattack by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and other armed organisations. It is only logical, however, that if you severely abuse people long enough, you can only expect them to counterattack and injure you one day whenever they get the opportunity. That made the Israelis furious and they took unlimited revenge. In response to these attacks, Israel tried to force the departure of the Palestinians from Gaza in the form of a second Nakba, by carrying out its bloodiest attacks since 1948. This not only made Gaza the largest open-air prison, but also the largest cemetery in the world. The assumption that the Palestinians would give up their resistance as a result of Israeli violent actions turned out to be — as could have been expected — incorrect. The opposite turned out to be the case: the resistance only increased. In reality, the Zionist rulers in Israel may have been less naive than some may have thought, because they must have well realised that with their decades-long occupation, ethnic cleansing and war crimes, they cannot achieve any real peace with the Palestinians.
Gaza children spend 8 hours per day carrying food, water: UN
The UN Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) said Saturday that children in the Gaza Strip spend eight hours a day carrying food and water, forcing families to resort to using seawater for daily tasks. “Sanitation facilities & infrastructure are severely compromised, forcing thousands of families to rely on seawater to wash, clean & even drink,” it added. Israel, flouting a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate cease-fire, has faced international condemnation amid its continued brutal offensive on Gaza since an Oct. 7 attack by the Palestinian group, Hamas. More than 38,000 Palestinians have since been killed, mostly women and children, and over 87,700 others injured, according to local health authorities.
The EU’s support for Israel makes it complicit in genocide
The EU is the second-largest arms supplier to Israel after the US. According to figures from the European External Action Service’s COARM database, between 2018 and 2022, EU member states sold arms worth 1.76 billion euros ($1.9bn) to Israel. Arms have continued to flow from EU countries to Israel even after the International Court of Justice made an interim ruling in January that the Israeli army was plausibly committing genocide. The EU has a system in place to implement arms embargoes but has refused to apply to Israel, leaving member states to slowly implement measures under pressure from civil society with scant political will to do so and falling far short of what is required. Some EU countries including Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Belgium’s Wallonia region, have announced that they would suspend arms transfers to Israel, but some of these statements were not followed up with timely concrete actions, or when they were, these amounted to temporary or partial arms transfer suspensions, which fell far short of a full arms embargo on Israel. According to SIPRI, Germany is by far the largest European supplier, providing Israel with 30 percent of its weapons between 2019 and 2023. Exports increased tenfold last year from 32.3 million euros ($35m) to 326.5 million euros ($354m) with the majority of licences granted after October 7.
Israel, born illegitimate, seizes more illegal land in the West Bank
In December 1948, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) responded. Through Resolution 194 (II), it called for the return of the refugees, property restitution and compensation for the Palestinians. However, Israel chose to totally ignore not only that resolution but also similar countless other UN resolutions over 75 years up to now. Needless to say, surviving Palestinian refugees and their descendants have yet to be allowed to return to their land in Israel or be compensated for what they had lost and suffered. And yet, with further undying support from its powerful ally (USA), Israel gained membership of the UN on 11 May 1949. However, UN approval of Israel’s membership was subject to Israel’s pledge to fulfil two conditions. Firstly, Israel was to withdraw from its illegal occupation of certain parts of Palestinian territories and its boundary confined to that indicated in UN Resolution 181(II) of 29 November 1947. Secondly, it was to allow the 1948 Palestinian refugees to return to their homes as required in UN Resolution 194(II). But as soon as it became a UN member, Israel refused to fulfil both pledges to the UN. In other words, the legitimacy of Israel’s membership of the UN is also questionable. Worse. Not too long after, in 1967, Israel added more pools of Palestinian blood to Israel’s bloody birth. Contrary to its membership pledge to abide by international law, Israel took illegal occupation of the rest of the Palestinian territories, viz Gaza Strip, West Bank and East Jerusalem. It caused an estimated 500,000 Palestinians to flee from it. Since then, Israel has acted as if these illegally occupied Palestinian Territories are part of a “greater” Israel stretching from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea.
