We are a meaner more awful country for this budget, we have two political parties, National and Labour who are not prepared to tax the rich to properly fund our social and physical infrastructure.
It is a media coup to claim this is a ‘vanilla’ budget or ‘middle of the road’ budget.
It is not!
It is a budget of billion cuts for the rich!
This Government has borrowed more than Labour did, but when Labour did it, it was to save us from Covid, when National did it, it was for tax cuts that benefit their rich donors!

100% Also social housing obviously is being privatised with interest deductibility* and accommodation supplements with a fat capital gain at the end for the landlords enabling the government to slither out from its social housing obligations. The shortage of rental properties is down to a lack of building houses not a lack of tax breaks Trevor. It’s about time one of our governments reformed our outdated tax system to take pressure off working people and incentivise investment in the productive areas of the economy. Giving tax relief to landlords does none of this. All we have done over the generations is kept kicking the can down the road, out of naked self interest leaving future generations to pay for our lack of forsight. No wonder people are bailing out to Australia and other shores.
They had a tax break still if they purchased a newly built home, how can purchasing existing homes & making it more difficult for first-home buyers to compete ever increase the rental supply compared to those seeking a house to rent anyway? If existing homes are sold to first-home buyers then there is at least 1 less rental home needed so your thinking is faulty.
