Gaza Strip
Air strikes: Heavy aerial bombardment on buildings, homes and many facilities.
Attacks: All over Gaza, there are air strikes, heavy gunfire, tank and artillery shelling, as well as missiles fired from Israeli forces and military occupation, especially in Khan Yunis. The Israeli Navycontinues to fire missiles, targeting facilities and buildings along the shoreline of the whole of Gaza.
Victims: 46 people killed in Gaza brings the total number of deaths since 7 October to at least 36,096. With another 110 wounded, that figure has risen to more than 81,136.
Strike on displaced Palestinians kills 45 and leaves many grappling with the devastating aftermath. After sunrise, survivors of the Israeli bombing of a Rafah displacement camp returned to assess the damage. Children peeked through the window of a hollowed-out car, men searched the burnt debris, and journalists took photos of the blackened food cans. Around 12 hours earlier, Palestinianfamilies were inside these tents, which were set ablaze after the Israeli military bombed the encampment, located in northwestern Rafah. Many had just finished night prayers, some were asleep and others were simply gathered with their families. “We were sitting down in peace when we suddenly heard the explosion,” said Layan al-Fayoum, a survivor of the attack. Chaotic scenes ensued, with panicked survivors running for safety amidst the charred bodies as one man held a headless child and a medic carried another with his brains blown out.
Pained cries of the injured, frantic efforts by medics and unspeakable scenes of the aftermath in Kuwaiti Hospital. When Dr Muhammad al-Mughayer, from the Palestinian Civil Defence, arrived at the site of the attack, the fires were still burning. “The fires were very big and they were spreading all over the place,” al-Mughayer told Al Jazeera. Most of those who were killed had severe burns on their bodies, he added. As al-Mughayer’s team worked to rescue survivors and retrieve corpses, they encountered charred bodies and people whose limbs had been blown off.
Israel continues to ignore orders from the International Court of Justice (ICJ), including the Court’s most recent ruling. This ruling requires Israel to halt its military assault on the Rafah Governorate in the southern Gaza Strip and reopen the Rafah border crossing to facilitate the movement of people and humanitarian aid. In the 48 hours that followed the ICJ’s ruling on Friday 24 May, however, Israel conducted more than 60 air raids on Rafah.
The Jewish Council of Australia renews our calls for the Albanese Government to use all possible diplomatic pressure to stop Israel committing the crime of genocide. Yesterday, an Israeli airstrike killed at least 45 people who were living in tents in the declared safe-zone of Rafah. The act is likely in breach of last week’s additional provisional orders of the International Court of Justice to immediately halt military operations in Rafah. This comes as the death toll from Israeli military actions in Gaza is increasing daily. In light of these developments, and the worsening conditions imposed on Palestinians in Gaza, and the West Bank, the Jewish Council of Australia calls on the Government to immediately cut all military ties and place sanctions on Israel. The Albanese Government must also place travel bans on extremist settlers and those suspected of war crimes. These actions would be in line with Australia’s obligations as a signatory to the Genocide Convention.
The former head of the Mossad, Israel’s foreign intelligence agency, allegedly threatened a chief prosecutor of the international criminal court in a series of secret meetings in which he tried to pressure her into abandoning a war crimes investigation, the Guardian can reveal. Yossi Cohen’s covert contacts with the ICC’s then prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda, took place in the years leading up to her decision to open a formal investigation into alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in occupied Palestinian territories. According to accounts shared with ICC officials, he is alleged to have told her: “You should help us and let us take care of you. You don’t want to be getting into things that could compromise your security or that of your family.” One individual briefed on Cohen’s activities said he had used “despicable tactics” against Bensouda as part of an ultimately unsuccessful effort to intimidate and influence her. They likened his behaviour to “stalking”. The Mossad also took a keen interest in Bensouda’s family members and obtained transcripts of secret recordings of her husband, according to two sources with direct knowledge of the situation. Israeli officials then attempted to use the material to discredit the prosecutor.
