Lobbyists gain stealth mode from Government as Trans National mining interests line up

Ummmm, now this is one bad idea…

Lobbyists are back at Parliament – with a new privacy measure hiding their identities

Gerry Brownlee says the privacy of people with ‘lobbying roles’ should be protected, while officials have drawn up a new code of conduct.

The identities of people allowed to freely come and go from Parliament have been made secret by the new Speaker.

…as Trans National Mining Interests line up offshore waiting for law change that will open up conservation land for mining alongside fast track powers for Dr Pork Shane Jones, shouldn’t we be very aware who is influencing NZ Policy, especially when you consider the open question marks over their Tobacco policy!

Abolishing the Treaty Principles would remove obligation to engage with Māori at a critical juncture when Trans National Mining Interests are lining up to exploit land that can get fast tracked and won’t have the obligation of working with Māori.

The ATLAS Network is the international Hard Right Think Tank that have links to ACT, Taxpayers’ Union and The NZ Initiative. They are providing the blueprint for free market far right tactics attacking the Left and are funded by the petroleum Industry. George Monbiot explains what ATLAS Network is

A crash programme of massive cuts; demolishing public services; privatising public assets; centralising political power; sacking civil servants; sweeping away constraints on corporations and oligarchs; destroying regulations that protect workers, vulnerable people and the living world; supporting landlords against tenants; criminalising peaceful protest; restricting the right to strike. Anything ring a bell?

…demolishing public services, privatising public assets; centralising political power; sacking civil servants; sweeping away constraints on corporations and oligarchs; destroying regulations that protect workers, vulnerable people and the living world; supporting landlords against tenants; criminalising peaceful protest AND restricting the right to strike?

The sooner we connect the Trans National Mining Interests, the Atlas Network and all the local franchise holders, the sooner we understand the enormity of what we collectively face here.

Of course the Right want to dump Treaty Principles, make it easier for Trans National Industry to exploit NZ resources AND hand someone like Shane Jones fast track powers!

These interests are all interconnected!

The score right now is:

Atlas Network – 2

NZ Democracy – 0

Māoridom -3

We should not be allowing corporate lobbyists to gain invisibility at a time when Trans National Interests are attempting to manipulate our democracy and economic sovereignty.

Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.

  1. We go from the one extreme where Labour attempted to hand complete control over our land and water to Iwi straight to the other extreme where National are making land exploitation an open season for exploitation. Neither option is good.

    • ” Neither option is good.” And neither is thinking National and neo-liberal ‘Labour’ are somehow different. They are not. They’re the same fucking thing man.
National is a dumb, flat footed, dripping nosed moron driving a double cab pick up truck and is neo-liberal while Labour is a mummy’s little boy with a secret torture fetish who is also neo-liberal.
Thank Christ luxon and chipkins can’t have babies.

  2. I think if National want to open of conservation land to mining then put an infrastructure tax on them. They’re going to do it anyway. Every shitty thing National dies is our opportunity to raise taxes, progressively.

  3. Mr Brownlee allowing various spivs and spruikers to have swipe access was not unexpected, but the non disclosure of who is slithering in and out has to be of concern.

Lobbyists of whatever stripe are undermining democracy in my view with their special pleading and interaction with political parties and politicians that an ‘ordinary’ voter just does not get.

  4. There’s no excuse for this when prominent National MPs said it was not right 12 months ago. Are we saying it confidential for the actual person turning up? Why is it confidential to declare which organisation they represent? Privacy my arse. As taxpayers we should not stand for this no matter who is power. National were right months ago.

Let’s hear the bullshit justification for this one.

  5. The National government is the most hypocritical in political history. We always knew they were corrupt and as for the speaker, shocker.

  6. ” The identities of people allowed to freely come and go from Parliament have been made secret by the new Speaker. ”

Thats another Kiwi myth demolished that we are an open liberal democracy.

Thats what Winston meant when he campaigned on taking back our country and giving it to ATLAS and wealthy business interests to write policy and all under the cloak of anonymity !

  7. It is funny that Hipkins is protesting about this government not being open and transparent when the Labour time was the worst period of underhanded deals especially with Maori.

  8. One has got to wonder why the secrecy, are the media going to go crazy over this like they would if it was Trevor Mallard et.al. There has been such a lot of secrecy from this coalition of clowns. In reality we haven’t really got a clue what they are up to behind closed doors.

  9. I understand why even Brownlee would feel that the organizational affiliations of lobbyists can’t be disclosed. Let’s say Peter Thiel’s latest lobbyist isn’t listed by name, but it goes on the record that the lobbyist for the ‘Drakon Blood Covenant’ has been visiting every Act MP daily. That’s basically just straight up doxxxing.

  10. There is no official public register of lobbyists. Publish an unofficial list on The Daily Blog. Who, who for and who they visit. Surely that info readily leaks out of the Parliamentary corridors.

  11. Brownlee enables corruption.

” One of the few positive things Chris Hipkins did as Prime Minister was to throw the lobbyists out of Parliament, cutting off their free access and requiring them to make an appointment like everybody else. But now, under National, they’re back – and with extra secrecy ”

” So, instead of trying to clean up our political system, we have a Speaker who is actively trying to re-introduce and protect corruption. Because that’s what the unequal and undemocratic influence of lobbyists on our political system is: corruption. It means that policy is determined by who spends the most money (and possibly, makes the biggest donations), rather than who wins the most votes. As for “privacy”, these people are trying to influence public business. If you or I do that, by writing to Ministers, submitting on proposed legislation, or even meeting with a Minister, our names and the content of our submissions get published. And rightly so – there’s no privacy interest at all when people are trying to influence policy. Brownlee’s special protection for these racketeers is simply saying that the rich and their tools should be allowed to exert such influence in secret. And who does that benefit?
But the mere fact that Brownlee has declared these people’s identities secret should give the press gallery a powerful incentive to unmask and expose them. News, after all, is something someone doesn’t want you to print. Everything else is just public relations ”
