Election 2023: Christopher Luxon warns Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment could see 30pct cut under National

Christopher Luxon has again refused to say what specific areas of the public sector he will cut under a National Government.

It isn’t the first time Luxon, the National Party leader, has done this. Last Sunday he refused to answer Newshub’s questions on what was off the table.

National unveiled its tax policy last month, which was aimed at helping the “squeezed middle” through tax cuts.

To pay for its tax cuts, National needs to find $594 million a year to slice out of the public service, which equates to a 6.5 percent cut in spending across the organisations.

Luxon told AM on Wednesday National would go through all the agencies and stop the “dumb, stupid wasteful stuff”.

When pressed by AM co-host Ryan Bridge about which departments could be on the chopping block, Luxon said it included everyone.

“Everybody can be looking at it because we don’t want more farewell parties. We don’t want Prezzy cards that [the Ministry of] Justice is handing out to people who go to court,” he said.

“We don’t need a whole bunch of wasted money that’s going on. We want everybody to go through, particularly in the back-office functions, and then we want in the cases of health and education, we want that money that’s going to be generated from the backroom savings put forward to the front line.”

When asked if Crown Law, the Serious Fraud Office and the Ministry of Justice could be included, Luxon said it includes all the agencies.

Luxon told AM the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) could “absolutely” be up for a 30-percent cut.

ACT and National are promising to gut MBIE because MBIE employs the people who regulate New Zealand’s poorly policed and under regulated capitalism!

27 000 Bosses were given the power to import migrant workers and exploit them, of that number only 2 have had their exploitation scams ended and that’s because there is no State policing the current regulations we have!

We see this time and time and time again, State regulators who are supposedly policing the under regulated markets with barely enough staff to look into anything at all!

Max Rashbrooke highlighted the horror of NZs under regulated market

The bad news is that, to investigate 200,000-300,000 terrible rentals, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) has employed a frontline inspectorate numbering … 37. Each inspector will have to check somewhere between 5000 and 8000 rentals.

…there is only 37 inspectors of rental properties for 300 000 terrible rentals?

Similar poorly funded regulation is apparent in the 82 labour inspectorates who are supposed to police hundreds of thousands of migrant worker exploitations!

ACT and National’s bullshit dismantling of Capitalism’s police tells you all you need to know about the deregulated hellscape a National/ACT monstrosity would birth into this world!

That is the stark divergent future we have right now, the Greensand Labour  using the State to lower the cost of your living vs ACT and National who want to slash and burn any regulation that impedes their capitalist paymasters a single cent.

This is why Roger Douglas, the founder of ACT, denounced them recently as a party for the rich!

This election is dangerously polarised and each other will see the other as an existential threat, which in terms as stark as these policy directions is absolutely true!

Many men who voted Labour in 2020 are so angry by the lack of actual change and alienated by the Woke left that they are flirting with voting ACT this election without fully appreciating just how fucking radical and damaging ACT will be in any Government.

I just don’t believe for that group of voters that they appreciate what they are voting in and when the issues are this polarised, it’s very important to know exactly what you are voting for.

The Greens, Maori Party and Labour deserve our support on this, not just because they are right, but because the alternative of ACT/National is so terrifyingly destabilising.

This election we could have the most Left wing Government since Michael Savage or the most Right wing Government since Roger Douglas.

I’m pissed off at Labour’s incremental fecklessness and the Greens alienating woke bullshit too, but that’s no excuse for allowing Darth Vader and his dancing Christian Stormtroopers from taking over the day care eh?

Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of the party.

Destroying the Ministry tasked with policing NZs poorly regulated capitalism is a recipe for disaster.

  1. Martyn – Great points …sadly, MBiE, and other Governmental Departments leadership have brought this on themselves by not serving the public well

  2. ‘there is only 37 inspectors of rental properties for 300 000 terrible rentals?’
This is the number after 6yrs of Labour in the driving seat!!

We all know there are certain state departments where the staff numbers are bloated, these are the departments that will be targeted, EVERY business on the planet trims the fat from their business to achieve efficiency, NZ state departments under Labour have grown obese so plenty of fat to trim without affecting core services, hell I’d even be surprised if the public even noticed the effect of the fat trimming at the coal face as the middle/upper management get cut, a few thousand 100k+ salaries saved by the tax payer and no perceived reduction in service to the public.
    Sorted!

    • Yet there are 480 working in the firearms register office, the one with the register that is not working for many trying to use it.

The lack of Inspectors but rediculous number of register people is a good example of just how out of touch the current Govt is.

    • 37 inspectors could comfortably inspect 4 properties per day, thus inspecting 10-15% of all renters. Why are they not already doing that? Because Wellington is one enormous episode of Gliding On.

    • Stick to the other name you use Bob( John) unless that name is used to hide your background. What have you got to hide Bob/John?

    • A bit like you Bob. Nash was a villain one minute but then a good bloke as it suited your argument. No wonder you feel at home with a consummate bullshitter as your next PM.

  3. Wasn’t MBIE the creation of the poster-boy of the Nats, Hon John Joyce?
He who could no wrong when in government; he who supposedly master-minded three successful Nat elections? He who manipulated to give private radio (one of which was his own creation which made him very wealthy) by giving them about $40 million of the hard-working taxpayers money?
Now the Right wants to destroy his much-vaunted creation….ungrateful hussys!!
How the mighty have fallen! So much for loyalty, Righties!
Beware all donors to the Right for what you expect to get back from them. They cannot be trusted.

    • National, their donors and their supporters can never be trusted, history is evidence of this.
One line ” I will not raise GST” John Key.

  4. This on RNZ this morning.
‘Ambitious tech project partnering US giant and govt agency founders’
    https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/497959/ambitious-tech-project-partnering-us-giant-and-govt-agency-founders
“They were also interested in separate projects that would potentially involve large-scale data analytics as this would help to demonstrate the value of New Zealand-based data farms,” it said of the $2.5 trillion company’s intentions.
“The US firm had just applied to buy freehold non-sensitive land in Auckland to build hyperscale data centres.”

“In particular, MBIE intends that Project B should serve as a proof-of-concept for how government can create the digital Public Service ecosystem to achieve a more interactive, intelligent, effective and value-adding service and regulatory relationship with NZ businesses.”

“This did not dent Microsoft’s fortunes. Its local revenues rose $200 million to more than $1 billion last year, and it continued to snare a lot of government business, moving masses of public data to its cloud-computing data centres in Australia.”

What the fuck’s going on here? Are we being consumed by a Zombie Bot because we’re in a geographically safe location to gain overall control of the planet?

  5. I see that once again independent economists are saying Nationals foreign buyer funded tax cuts are a fantasy and they can’t make the numbers work. Why the hell would they not release their workings if they are so confident? All these stupid f’ing people who are so hell bent on change of government have lost the plot. Change the government fine, but don’t let the incoming mob bullshit you into believing they have the answers. Well they do have answers for the big donors but not the majority. You are accusing Labour of mismanagement and then voting more mismanagement in a different colour. How does that help us?

    • Yes Wheel we are fast heading to a catastrophe based on a flawed model of the proposed tax cuts. If these cuts were actually possible on their costings why not release them. People have complained about the lack of transparency by the Labour government cans see that this lot has failed at the first hurdle

  6. “This election we could have the most Left wing Government since Michael Savage”

With incrementalist Hipkins and Robertson in charge? I don’t think so. Just like Jacinda wasn’t the transformational change agent, many left wing commentators said she would be either.

  7. Anybody who knows about name promotion would aee National have struck gold with this policy .The lead story for days on radio and TV is this tax policy .The name National will be in people’s mind long after they forget the reason.Wi ston used the same plan with his ridiculous claim about Maori

    • lol – the only reason it’s gold is because it highlights how useless they are and not even in govt. yet. heaven help us – hopefully those with talent in the background will come forward and knife these gutless wonders in the back.

  8. Many men who voted Labour in 2020 are so angry by the lack of actual change and alienated by the Woke left that they are flirting with voting ACT this election without fully appreciating just how fucking radical and damaging ACT will be in any Government.

Anything but the Tory’s and the Unionists flouncing around in the neo liberal middle.

  9. So, the 15 thousand public service backroom workers who will be gone by xmas under both national and act they need to vote and get their whanau out to vote too it is no good moaning if you don’t vote.

  10. So, the 15 thousand public service backroom workers who will be gone by xmas under both national and act they need to vote and get their whanau out to vote too it is no good moaning if you don’t vote.

  11. An unwise comment from Luxon/Gnational Party. When gnashing his teeth and looking for victims to release his mighty wrath on – don’t say “Luxon told AM on Wednesday National would go through all the agencies and stop the “dumb, stupid wasteful stuff”. because many, many, people are beginning to look at the verbiage from politicians before the election as such, and then the verbiage and dearth of action after as definitely such —- ‘dearth’ shrinking into ‘death’ of hope, belief and of NZ/AO. Only one ‘R’ letter away – does that reflect on bad education iin the ‘3Rs’?
