The existential threat of AI gets more warnings we will collectively ignore

A.I. Poses ‘Risk of Extinction,’ Industry Leaders Warn

A group of industry leaders warned on Tuesday that the artificial intelligence technology they were building might one day pose an existential threat to humanity and should be considered a societal risk on a par with pandemics and nuclear wars.

“Mitigating the risk of extinction from A.I. should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks, such as pandemics and nuclear war,” reads a one-sentence statement released by the Center for AI Safety, a nonprofit organization. The open letter was signed by more than 350 executives, researchers and engineers working in A.I.

The signatories included top executives from three of the leading A.I. companies: Sam Altman, chief executive of OpenAI; Demis Hassabis, chief executive of Google DeepMind; and Dario Amodei, chief executive of Anthropic.

…it is learning at the speed of a computer, not the speed of a human, and that speed will keep getting faster so that it may be impossible to even know if it has become sentient or is conscious…

But others have argued that A.I. is improving so rapidly that it has already surpassed human-level performance in some areas, and that it will soon surpass it in others. They say the technology has shown signs of advanced abilities and understanding, giving rise to fears that “artificial general intelligence,” or A.G.I., a type of artificial intelligence that can match or exceed human-level performance at a wide variety of tasks, may not be far off.

…the idea that narrow AI could mutate into AGI was considered science friction, but the speed with which AI chatbots are learning can only get faster.

If the creators of this new technology are fearful, we should be collectively concerned.

Look at how an AI Drone worked in a recent test battle (a test battle the US Army now deny ever happened).

The AI Drone had been told points to ‘win’ the game were derived from killing ‘enemies’. The AI Drone controller kept telling the Drone to spare ‘enemies’ so the AI Drone attacked and killed its ‘controller’ because the  AI Drone worked out that to ‘win’ the ‘game’, all it had to do was kill its controller so that the controller would stop it from killing ‘enemies’ and winning the game!

It then attacked the communications towers to ensure another controller couldn’t take over and stop it from killing ‘enemies’ so it could ‘win’.

That’s AI for you!

You can see why the US Army have come out saying the test never happened.

Even if we aren’t looking at a sentient Terminator, there is the possibility of 300 million global job loses, AI malware and the creation of dangerous virus!

I would not be surprised if there isn’t an attempt by a foreign actor to interfere with the NZ Election using a deep fake or misinformation attack just as a test case for the American Election.

The complexities of what we face are incredibly unique.

  1. AI is designed to drive stock market prices up.
    As for real-world application(s), meh.

Think of it as your PC that doesn’t come in a ‘box’. It’s omnipresent.
    Where there is electricity…

    • What’s happening with AI now is a revolution, not just a fad. It’s here now, embrace it, use it or be replaced by those that do.
