Cost of Living: MYOB poll shows more than 1 million Kiwis actively considering leaving NZ

Eye-watering figures suggest more than one million Kiwis are actively considering leaving New Zealand as the brain drain takes full force.

The latest Consumer Snapshot from business management platform MYOB, a nationwide poll of more than 500 people, shows four percent of those polled – equivalent to around 200,000 New Zealanders – have decided they are moving overseas to live and work now the borders have reopened.

The most alarming figures showed an additional 20 percent of those surveyed, equivalent to approximately 1,025,000 people based on population data, said they are actively considering moving offshore.

This is a drastic rise in pre-pandemic trends with just less than 41,000 Kiwis leaving New Zealand to go overseas for at least 12 months in 2019.

The figures are based on population data from Stats NZ.

I say this to young NZ – flee!

Between January and March this year a record 363,888 food grants were handed out on top of a 500% spike in food bank demand.
Over the last year 18.4% of children lived in poverty, $5.5 billion in profits were made by ANZ, BNZ, ASB and Westpac and the Top 1% own 25% of wealth while the Bottom 50% owns 2% of wealth.

NZ is a user pays society that has dumped any pretence of egalitarianism. Your student debt locks you out of home ownership and the broken housing market only benefits speculators while crushing first time home buyers.

Wages have been suppressed by de-unionising the workforce, subsistence living and poverty are the norm and public services have been endlessly eroded.

Flee.

This country has become the Land of the wrong white crowd and the only solutions the political Left have are virtue signalling identity politics that only alienate while the Right sells endless selfishness.

Our suicide rates speak of a dark treacle at the heart of our nature that whispers dark truths we never want to hear.

We have built our economy on the sandcastles of hyper tourism, exploiting migrant workers and International Student Language School scams.

Run from the failed experiment of neoliberalism that is New Zealand.

We have failed ourselves and our blunders shouldn’t blight your futures.

The Big Tech Tzars have manipulated our collective fear, ego, anger and insecurities through social media in a way that has led to the largest psychological civil war ever launched against one another.

We are but meat bags secreting hormones addicted to dopamine rewards for fat, sugar, salt and sex in a cultural landscape of individualism uber alles where we sing sweet secret lies to ourselves to make sense of a world around us that is frightening and in constant entropy.

Meanwhile, the planet burns and every aspect of our existence is monetarised for big data to sell us more stuff we can’t afford. We are alienated and anesthetized by a consumer culture that keeps us neurotic and disconnected. Our work, our existence, every move we make are all built to suck money to a minority class that sits above us while under neoliberalism, globalization, financialization, and automation, our existence as individuals has only become more disposable.

Flee for we are a user pays Nation of cursed hollow men with no memory and no vision.

  1. Well, where would I go where there is no neo-liberal regime? Its called Globalism for a reason. North Korea? China? Russia?

    • Well, if Sri Lanka is not a warning to Jacinda to roll back the massive wealth thrown at the rich home owners and landlords during COVID then I don’t know what is. The clocks ticking, the youth are watching. CGT NOW.

      • Not as much as John Key gave to the property speculators in the 5 years between 2012 and 2017. Luxon wants to invite them back with subsidised tax rebates on interest for buying properties. House prices are heading south big time.

  2. Never before has one generation destroyed everything for their grandkids just for greed. And they wonder why they are dumped in retirement homes?

      • Isnt that more the attitude of the generation who is about to be the beneficiaries of the largest transfer of wealth the planet has ever seen? The boomers worked and aquired, as was the norm and promoted by everyone at the time, the following generation are going to be the primary beneficiaries of a that work and acumulation. Seeing they are beingg handed this without doing the hard years should they really be whining little self entitled little bitches whenever the subject comes up? No, I am not a boomer, I am one of the beneficiaries, one who doesn’t hate his perants for doing what society said to do at the time.

        • Thanks Peter. And thanks also to all the hard-working grandparents and great grandparents who Kelvin Davis MP is so very wrongly and divisively keen to paint as arch villains. Most were ok, with some awe-inspiring personal histories which one can only salute.

        • Wow – some of the Baby Boomers fooled you big time!
That Generation enjoyed a free ride for 20 years, and stay loaded for those 20 years, they took it all, sex, drugs, and roll and rock…now they are facing burn out, and death — they are turning self righteous, and telling people how to live — the bloody nerve of that…after passing laws like Student Loans, and abolishing the Government backed low rate mortgage system,
Go back to worshiping that selfish, greedy group…you silly devil.

    • mate – me and my gen-x mates made our baby-boomer parents look like little lost sheep – gen-x is the gordon gekko generation

  3. Dear Young Kiwis – Stay and fight for your beautiful few Islands.
They’re yours, not theirs. If you go? We’re fucked.
Begin by closing our borders to foreign millionaires and billionaires and kick those out who’re already here. Musk’s plaything Pete Thiel’s here and Larry Page of Google’s here and they’re only the ones we, or at least I, know about. There will be an army of the fuckers here I’m sure and there will be greater numbers still will be on the way. You been to Wanaka lately? The massive palaces along the water front? Those old fuckers cruising around in $150K plus cars or flying overhead in helicopters or Gulf Streams? So, you’re a Maori Mum and Dad with a young family and you want to build a crib on the shoreline for you and your whanau for the holidays? Yeah, well good luck with that.
Then? Wreck the Banks. The four foreign owned fuckers. *anz, asb, bnz and westpac must be seized under the proceeds of crimes act and asset stripped as required.
    * Ever wonder why I sometimes don’t use capitals? Well, it’s my way of showing my disgust and a deliberate lack of respect.

    • Couldn’t agree more. It’s worth noting that a recent decision by the government to provide all New Zealand taxpayer’s information to the US government was motivated by Peter Thiel wanting to make it easier for him to continue to invest in US military industrial complex concerns. They sold all of us out, for a foreigner who doesn’t even live here.

  4. High wages and good working conditions are necessary to retain people in NZ.

Amenities need to be maintained, NZ used to be able to offer lower wages by making NZ attractive to raising a family, but increasingly not being able to access decent schooling, health care, public spaces like parks and beaches, higher crime and random shootings and knifings and laissez faire housing planning means that NZ is no longer attractive, to family life.

These days you buy a house in NZ and the next minute it is either leaky or some high rise goes up next door blocking light and privacy, a marina, helicopter pad, farm effluent or boy racers take over the local beach, a landfill (dome valley) or manufacturing plant like Rio Tinto (storing hazardous waste) is pushed through or allowed to disrupt everyone else’s lives in the name of business.

Normal planning issues seen in the UK, like privacy, amenity, smell, safety and sunlight are all considered minor effects in NZ planning, as anybody with money can build anything, anywhere. Plants like Rio Tinto get away with storing hazardous waste and councils/government make the residents pay for clean up.

All this is not very fair and eroding NZ as a good place to live.

NZ is pushing to be a good place to live if you are very rich, a criminal or very poor and can play the system. (Normal poor, get very little, but for the chose poor who seemingly can work the system there can be a brand new Kainga Ora apartment, getting free food in a free supermarket and having everything looked after).

  5. “You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time.”
    ~~ Abraham Lincoln ~~

Pertaining to State Media and our current Government, we are perhaps in the later half of that quote: “..but you can not fool all of the people all of the time.”

The Government claims they are doing a wonderful job, State Media claims crime is down based on historical data, their acolytes claim house prices are sustainable.

Some people have given up and embrace such messaging, and over time just become none-player-characters (NPCs) – they just repeat the soundbites.

The majority both figuratively and literally have tuned out (as seen through viewership ratings). Basically the soundbites are incongruent with what the majority observe in their day-to-day-lives.

This is no way to run a country. It’s directionless because basic realities are denied and truths are too easily substituted for ideologies and relativism.

There is a real lack of confidence in our current government and in the opposition’s ability to hold them to account. I actually think it’s beyond lack-of-confidence, there is a genuine fear from both working people and capital that any investment they make in NZ could be washed away under the rule of the current lot.

Again on the media.. I’ve started calling them “State Media”. I don’t feel comfortable calling them the Main Stream Media anymore. Though their funding is high, their viewership is low, shrinking and pretty much gone in ‘prime demographics’.

    • Todd
WP is the official govt bank (yes an AUS bank!) So the ogre is a cleverly hidden (ha! But I spotted it!) metaphor for our benevolent and kind govt. A loving fluffy friendly beast that will make all our dreams come true with trans toilets on board the tree boat. When the sly agency presented the (they’ll buy this) concept to all and sundry, the executives peed in their pants with joy and excitement. “Kiwis will fall in love with us again” they drooled. So excited were they, that they signed of a 100million dollar budget right there and then, no questions asked. And so the shittest, most patronising, most banal and most pathetic bank campaign with the most predictable and most overused soundtrack came to all of our screens. It’s cringeworthy. The agency bought new Bentleys and Ferraris for all staff.

  6. Jacinda is a millennial. She unfortunately grew up with all the Blairite 3rd way shite, so doesn’t know any other structure for Labour.

  7. back in November1979 I and my kiwi wife arrived in NZ. January 1980 we had both found jobs in Wellington. I was on ten thousand a year and we rented a basement flat in Khandallah. 1981 we’d saved a $10,000 deposit and bought a house in central Johnsonville for $32,000. It was all so easy! :-). The same house now has a QV of $960,000! I thought then NZ was a paradise: climate much milder than England, great outdoors recreation tramping in the Tararuas and top of the South island and freehold property prices insanely cheap. I’m sad to witness it all disappear starting in 1884. I feel for young people today if only it was as good now as back in 1980. Because of that initial start i still live in my own house up here in Newlands. When we broke up my 50% gave me a 61% deposit on my current house.

  8. NZ has also become a train wreck of hiring decisions in people in power who then seem to create more division!

The appalling selection for the roles such as national Centre of Research Excellence to fight violent extremism has already being discussed the Daily Blog https://thedailyblog.co.nz/2022/06/04/ummmm-isnt-professor-joanne-kidman-the-worst-person-to-appoint-to-an-extremism-taskforce/, but scary stuff how Dr Joanna Kidman got the job, when actually was on the hiring panel then put’s herself up for the job and is on for 3 years, while other co- directors get 1!

Bullying and corruption is rife in NZ!

PM’s terrorism, extremism expert Prof Richard Jackson hired then dropped
    https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/pms-terrorism-extremism-expert-prof-richard-jackson-hired-then-dropped/VBFWQBOOSKWBZPXTCQUXLPSEUM/

Can we get a taskforce to check about the lack of rigour in NZ appointments when those who are supposed to hire people, somehow get the job themselves instead??????

No wonder 1 million people want to leave NZ, to escape the woke madness, power grab, bullying and nepotism.

  9. Ha! Most kiwis would never have the balls, guts or gumption to get off there arse and protest.
If their not protesting now, I can’t see what would get them off the couch.
And don’t tell me the dumb lives matter protest were protesting about any of the things in the above piece from Martyn.
    They weren’t.
