New Lobby Group Calls Out Sensible Sentencing Trust

New Zealand’s newest lobby Group “Social Justice Aotearoa” has denounced the actions of Sensible Sentencing Trust since its inception twenty one years ago.

CEO of Social Justice Aotearoa, Jackie Foster, said in her speech to a group of over 60 supporters “Sensible Sentencing Trust has campaigned strongly to increase prison sentences, introduce the three strikes law, without wondering why crime was increasing, never bothering to seek why so many New Zealanders where so broken, providing the only solution of locking people up for longer and longer” The question must be asked just how sensible was that”

Senior barrister, Lady Heeni Phillips-Williams, wife of the late Sir Peter Williams QC, attended the launch speaking to Maori television. Lady Phillips said “Māori men will end up in prison, they are there until you can get them out and sort out the injustice before it goes further. But some don’t have that opportunity.”

Social Justice Aotearoa will only ever lobby for changes that are good for the whole country and not just what a few small minded people think. Social Justice Aotearoa will be a lobby group for all New Zealanders.

  1. Wombats.
33% less people in prison, 37% increase in violent crime.
You should be made to live next to the violent drug dealers being let out of jail.
Events have overtaken the fluffy carebear thinking on gangs.
    Just read a newspaper.

  2. There is no evidence to support the association you have made keepcalmcarryon. I could say the 501s policy, the increase in living costs and the Covid has caused an increase in violence but where is my proof.

    • 501s were happening under the Nats without the crime wave.
They are less than 1% of the more than 50% increase in gang members under this government.

Ivory towers in the leafy suburbs decided that arbitrarily reducing the prison population was good and that reducing consequences for bad behavior if you had a sad upbringing, and legitimizing gangs by letting them run roadblocks or breach lockdown, and giving them millions of dollars, were all good things. Also not evicting criminally violent state tenants. Because colonialism.

To those of us that (arguably) aren’t half witted woke dickheads and know through dealing with adult humans in real life, animals in real life and children in real life that if you take away negative consequences for bad behavior and reward it instead, you create bad outcomes.
      It is clearly rocket science.

50% increase in gang numbers, 37% increase in violent crime. Ram raids, drive by shootings every night.

I note as well that 2 of the 4 guns last in the media as seized by Police, were banned semi autos – another policy failure which made things worse.

Good luck selling the light on crime message, even Coster is having to swallow his woke pride and adopt a version of the Nats gang busting policy.

      • lol, if you don’t have several broken chromosomes you know very well that active ‘gang members’ have not increased by 50% under the Ardern regime. Those National Gang List numbers are nonsense, you can get added on to them any time Constable Smith wants but you will never be removed.

Have active gang members increased in number? Probably. The Ardern regime has followed the same sickening Rogernomics legacy as every government since the b**tard Lange. I would love to think that they will wake up and start working to make sure the children of the poor, particularly those less intellectually apt, can find worthwhile things to do with their time. But that would be ‘left-wing’ ‘socialism’, so people like you and Ardern won’t be backing that.
