Ricky Gervais slammed for ‘bigot comedy’ about trans people in new Netflix special
Ricky Gervais is under fire for his new Netflix standup special, SuperNature.
The star has landed in hot water after his hour-long special included jokes about the trans community and “old-fashioned women”.
Near the beginning of the show the actor says, “Oh, women! Not all women, I mean the old-fashioned ones. The old-fashioned women — you know, the ones with wombs. Those fucking dinosaurs.”
People Magazine reported the comedian continued on to say, “I love the new women. They’re great, aren’t they? The new ones we’ve been seeing lately,”
Adding, “The ones with beards and cocks. They’re as good as gold, I love them. And now the old-fashioned ones [say], ‘Oh, they want to use our toilets.’ ‘Why shouldn’t they use your toilets?’ ‘For ladies!’ ‘They are ladies — look at their pronouns! What about this person isn’t a lady?’ “

I laughed so hard at that joke I almost knocked my laptop off the table.
Ricky’s latest hilarious stand up offering on Netflix is as controversial as all good comedy should be. Gervais like Chappelle have been cancelled by puritan woke censors who claim their jokes against the Trans community amount to a hate crime.
This attempt to discredit the intellectual power and social commentary gold that both comedians present is driven by a belief that good satire should ‘never punch down’, but the problem with that argument is that the puritan woke censors and their identity politics dogma IS the dominant cultural now, so critiquing the middle class woke’s virtue signalling is EXACTLY the job of comedy.

@SPC I take your point about ‘not all woke people’ however the reaction to the excesses of Woke preaching and impulses towards authoritarianism is completely predictable.
There is a religiosity towards seeing society through a cultural conflict-theory lens of oppressor/oppressed (evil/good) based on identity markers.
This is no accident, most self-identified ‘Woke’ people do not understand the history of Woke ideology (‘street’ or applied Critical Theory) or it’s marriage of convenience with fashionable neoliberals. It is seen as a continuation of earlier decades of progressive activism when infact it is often the antithesis. Woke is a cuckoo in the progressive nest, it leverages off the plight of a selective groups in society for the benefit of a cultural elite while largely ignoring socio-economics and is often counterproductive for those it claims to support. It’s main benefit seems to be in making affluent middle class people feel better about themselves and enriching a handful of identity-preachers.
Essentialising around identity markers is not progressive it is highly regressive and divisive. Unfortunately in the same way that most Woke people cannot see Woke is a cuckoo in the progressive nest, neither can many others. The growing backlash will be accelerated by hard economic times and just when we need universalist, progressive economic policies the most, the danger is we kick out the cuckoo AND burn the nest making progressive policies impossible for a decade or more.

@SPC It would be interesting if that causes dissonance in woke activists as that’s not how intersectionality works, it is not defined by ‘minority’ status but by ‘oppression’ status.
It uses a cultural version of conflict theory where the dichotomy of oppressor/oppressed is applied to identity categories. So white/Black, straight/gay, male/female, cis/trans, colonial/indigenous, it goes on and on, to obesity, neuro-divergence etc. No doubt right-handedness will be problematised at some point.
These categories or dimensions ‘intersect’ and the victimhood adds up and the privilege subtracts. This determines status of privilege/victimhood. For the more extreme ideologues it even signals morality of evil/good, privilege becomes analogous to original sin.
Heteronormative, white, cis and male scores privilege points (‘bad’) in each category. Billionaire would be glossed over as this brand of neo-marxists usually ignore any effective socio-economic critique.

The idea of people having a gender identity was first posited by a sexologist, Dr John Money. Money made statements that children could consent to having sex with adults and that under these circumstances paedophilia is ok. He is still quoted on a paedophilia activist website. There is a cleat overlap between gender identity and queer theory. The academics credited with developing queer theory include Judith Butler, who believes biological sex is a social construction and that children can consent to sex with adults. As did Michael Foulcout. Prof Gabrielle Rubin also advocated for inter generational sex. These three are identified as developing this ideology. These academics were not clinicians (other than Money), but have exposed theories that trans right activists have adopted and parroted. And it is these activists who shut women in particular down, when they challenge these theories. Thus Ricky parodies this beautifully when he says “but he’s got a penis”. Response back “she’s got a penis, you fucking bigot”. This is what happens to women when they point out the reality that men cannot become woman(and instantly be accepted into our sex class).
Meanwhile excellent research out of Sweden of long term follow up of trans people who under go sex reassignment surgery. At long term follow up, they had higher rates of suicide, heart disease, psychiatric admissions than prior to sex re assignment. Men who transitioned to women had the same rates of criminality as natal males. Females, in one part of the study had criminality rates that resembled natal males. So we need good science to direct us to the best treatments for people with gender dysphoria. And I am not going to begin to talk about children being given puberty blockers and being given double mastectomies aged 16.
Smearing the LGBT community as peadophiles is an age old trope by those in the the religious right (Anita Bryant, Phylis Schafly, etc) to impose their own biblical puritan world view.

The claim that predatory behaviour would result from progressive reform was a tactic used to suppress acceptance of same sex relationships. Neither children, nor animals, are more at risk from same sex marriages.

However Queer theory is problemation for reasons I have mentioned above, mainly that it’s proponents endorse “consensual” sex between adults and children, or inter generational sex.
@Anker this is compounded by creating a protected class that is in someway sanctified or beyond reproach. Even when done with the best of intensions, people seeking social advantage or to act with malicious or abusive intent will seek to identify within that class for the cover it provides (Catholic Priest is a classic example). This is why IMO self-identification, while it sounds great in theory, has the potential for misuse and risks backfiring spectacularly for BOTH women and trans women.

I think as with all these…unusual ‘out of the norm’ situations, what people don’t like is not the fact that someone wants to be male or female or both or what ever. I don’t think that’s it, everyone is free to be. Suddenly, instantly, it’s all about them, they are more important than anyone else! Pavements get painted rainbow, advertisers do ‘unrealistic situation’ woke ads on tv, politicians join the show and push for laws to be changed, school toilets are rearranged, and suddenly everything is about them. You make a joke about it and you gets cancelled or arrested. Maybe, it’s just too much for society to digest sometimes??
