Minister Michael Wood has lashed out at NZME’s talkback station’s use of an inorganic collection day photo as the main image on a story about a new Kainga Ora development being built in New Plymouth.
Newstalk ZB host Heather du Plessis-Allan shared a piece on-air and online about the new development, titled ‘I don’t think they are being judgemental. I think they’re being realistic’.
In du Plessis-Allan’s piece, she said locals “have very good reason to oppose it and should continue to oppose it and should definitely insist that it’s not in my backyard”.
“Anyone who supports a Kainga Ora/Housing NZ development in their neighbourhood at the moment is being foolish and naive as long as Kainga Ora/Housing NZ continues to run its no evictions policy,” she added.
But it was the image attached to the article that Wood had an issue with, as it showed a street of state housing with piles of rubbish on the front lawn. The photo was actually from Getty and depicted an inorganic collection day in Mt Roskill in 2011.
“I recognise this image. It’s a street I know well in the middle of Mt Roskill,” Wood tweeted.
“Proud, decent people who now have an image of inorganic collection day being used to create an impression that they are lazy, messy, and anti-social.
“Of course genuinely bad behaviour needs to be managed by the landlord, but this sort of inaccurate scare-mongering is just about stirring nasty class politics and clicks. We’ll keep building the houses our families need.”
Firstly, what a politically sleazy thing for Heather du Plessis-Allan and the property speculation pimps at NZME to falsely smear state house tenants with this classist bullshit and think they could get away with it!

Secondly, how righteous is Michael Wood?
I had doubts when he was Nazi Hunting during Parliament’s Dumb Lives Matter protest, but his courage to stand up for a higher minimum wage in Cabinet and push for better public transport while denouncing these sorts of lazy right wing smears keeps marking him out as a politician of genuine conviction and value.

du Plessis-Allan looks more than just politically sleazy to me, she looks downright dishonest. It’s a rotten thing to be doing to locals who may not deserve it. Wood is right to call her out on graphically dirty politicking. Looks to me like somebody put her up to this. ‘Realistic’ transposing one town with another ? No, batty.

Most kiwis have total contempt for renters, they look down on them. Look at parliament, so many landlords whose sole job seems to be reward landlords, the whole filthy neuvo caste system needs to be dismantled.
The media often use file photos to tell the story or create the narrative they want. When you see a photo in an article labeled “file photo”, ask yourself why is this here? What are they trying to say? Usually file photos have nothing to do with the story they actually tell, only the story they are trying to sell. A lot of the images used fit certainly narratives or have click bait properties, heavily armed Police, evil black gun, scary Maori gang members, demure sexy prostitutes etc. They say a picture tells 1000 words, the inappropriate use of file photos tells 1000 lies, especially as many people only see the picture & just read the headline. So make sure you don’t buy the lies they are selling. It is pretty insidious & toxic, but it is worth calling them on it. It is lazy at best, downright dishonest at worst.
Also did Heather du Plessis-Allan get charged with firearms offences after illegally purchasing one? Of course not, lying is her profession.

I would protest against Kainga Ora building houses in my street because I wouldn’t trust the Govt (who were so quick to scream out about the “river of filth” on their workplace lawn) not to place anti social tenants in my neighbourhood and then refuse to evict them.
Before I get any sort of pile on here, I grew up in a State Housing area, in the days where people behaved decently to their neighbours. I also now live in a ethnically diverse neighbourhood (which I don’t tout as some sort of left wing virtue signal. I really couldn’t care a toss who my neighbours are as long as they are civil and don’t engage in any anti social activities
as someone who has lived in a “mixed” community, it’s great. Takes the edge off the smell of disinfectant if you ask me.
Surely the media and identity brigade should be complaining how Woods is a stale, pale, male while du Plessis-Allan is a wonderful female, migrant who deserves to denigrate and sneer at Kiwi’s due to her superior identity and media presence?
Notice, two young men in the Herald took their lives, who seemed to have a lot to live for, and be well liked and supported, but maybe constantly being told their identities as white, male in NZ, which they can not easily change, is part of the problem.
