…”I always like to validate that people typically are not ill-intentioned when they say these [positive] things so I suggest that people try to validate and seek understanding, just say ‘this is hard, I’m here for you, I know that this must be so difficult for you’, and try to meet the person where they’re at.”…

In fact, having a little bit of negativity is not so bad, she says. It can help induce creativity, distinguish what’s important to you, solve problems, and help you make decisions.

Goodman suggests a healthier way of looking at positivity by balancing reality and hope.
“I think that balance is of course different for everybody but it really just means attuning yourself to be able to look at ‘this what I need to fix, this is what’s not going right, this is what I need to accept’ and also still having hope or an open mind that things could get better and we don’t always know how things will turn out.”

Interesting I was talking about similar recently. A friend’s children have turned away from her, are often rude and critical for no reason. She has always been supportive of them, unconditional love has been her guide. They used to behave in a normal fashion but since they have been to group therapy as part of their training that has changed. It should be good for leading to balanced relationships, empathy and understanding but instead they seem to have been encouraged to dredge up past events and consider them to find harmful outcomes; a lot of fault finding goes on. They are now convinced they have been hard done by as children and downplay all done for them, and the good lives they have now, which would be better if they didn’t drink so much. Being too positive and encouraging seems to have been a mistake – it’s been OTT, and led to dissatisfaction and criticism. Ironic. This attitude may be more common than realised and be behind much of the ennui present in the younger age group and protesters.

  2. An open letter to Pastor Carl Bromley, who today announced his candidacy for the Christchurch mayoralty:
Don’t forget to tell the electorate you have the full support of your racist mate Lee Williams, and the backing of more fundamentalist halfwits than all of the other Council candidates combined. That’ll work. You might want to downplay your unlawful activities promoting the spread of the Covid virus (running your church services during lockdown, attending the Beehive takeover, ignoring mask requirements, and promoting businesses that did the same). Not to mention taking a dose of it home with you. Better start praying to Allah as well, because what you need to be a successful candidate is a miracle, son. Anyway, I’m happy to help you with educating those in your electorate. As long as I don’t have to work with that neo-Nazi mate of yours.
