I don’t ‘know’, personally, the seven people who read this. Ukraine is the re-ignition of idealism for democracy — can’t think of anything else that qualifies for that title in the last ten years. And this time the Western Democracies are full in on it. And — democracy has at its Ferrer Roche heart the rule of the people.
Which is to say, let all the Left yowl and holler for Ukrainian democracy and bring it home to us during the last 8 years that matter in the ‘history of the world’.
One in every 10 years is the time of ideals, this is now. Those Left talkers who have had to survive the other 9 years often can’t meet the occasion. I remember writing to Chris Trotter that the global financial crisis was such a time, overturning the 84 freemarket order as it did. We dragged ourselves out of it and got another 10 years of comfort and pleasure with the disproved Rogernomes still in power. Good shit.
If the Left isn’t interested in democracy as a central matter, as the pivot, the heart of our cause, we are puckerood.
