Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s latest report paints bleak picture

Temperatures on Earth will shoot past a key danger point unless greenhouse gas emissions fall faster than countries have committed, the world’s top body of climate scientists say, warning of the consequences of inaction but also noting hopeful signs of progress.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the latest report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change revealed “a litany of broken climate promises” by governments and corporations, accusing them of stoking global warming by clinging to harmful fossil fuels.

“It is a file of shame, cataloguing the empty pledges that put us firmly on track towards an unlivable world,” he said.

This is the truth…

…and this is the truth…

…the truth is that fighting global warming means fighting rapacious free market capitalism.

The truth is the poorest will suffer first.

The truth is that we need to look at a post growth economy and society. We need 4 day weeks, we need 40 hour weeks period. We need more artists. We need a State with capacity. We need to be sustainable for the basics. We need to be 100% renewable power.

The truth is we need to be far kinder to individuals while being far crueller to Corporations.

The truth is we can’t stop global warming and catastrophic climate change and that our only hope is radical adaptation.

The truth is the current political spectrum can not adapt fast enough to make legislation to deal with radical adaptation.

The truth is a Revolution at the ballot box is required.

The truth is that the climate crisis is now and if you thought voters were frightened by Covid, they ain’t seen nothin yet.

The truth will quickly be that being a smug hermit kingdom has its advantages.

In a climate crisis world, New Zealand will be one of those rare places that will be relatively unharmed.

Radical adaptation here means we can survive.

Be honest.

The Government’s Climate Emergency was an empty virtue signal.

Be honest.

COP26 was an empty virtue signal.

Be honest.

This latest report with its dire warnings will be replaced by the next MAFS controversy and endless direction of Will Smith’s toxic masculinity and we will start squabbling over the narcissism of small difference and bicker amongst ourselves as the Planet melts.

The rapidly changing climate will dictate the reality now. If you think swapping carbon credits is a solution, you are part of the problem.

We are going to need a bigger Army, Navy and Air Force.

Like way bigger.

  1. The truth is there are too many people on this planet and nothing, short of the sudden arrival of Thanos, will change that.
The truth is the 100 corporations producing 70% of green house gases are doing it on our behalf.
The truth is nothing will change and nothing will help unless everything changes.

  2. One can certainly see how someone in the position of Bill Gates; obsessed with this catastrophic rise in global temperature if we don’t radically alter the way we live, reflecting on the complete impossibility of Modern society on a person by person basis making those changes, let alone electing a government that was intent on somehow imposing them, might devise a way of applying their billions to do the necessary adjustments to the population level.
It would explain the need to inject the whole world population with something that in a myriad of ways will drastically reduce that population.
There is so much in mass delusion that is similar between these two issues that it is unlikely they are not connected.

    • I have heard that he is also the largest private owner of farmland in the USA, maybe he knows that instead of recycling 90% of the food grown on this Earth through animals then feeding people animal products that reduce the quality & duration of the life of the highest consumers of those products he can develop plant foods that increase his wealth while also increasing the number of people wanting to purchase his software?

      • He is also right into synthetic artificial meat. I have wondered what he is going to do with those farms. Putting completely out of production seems most likely to me , though forrest planting would seem appropriate for his concerns.

  3. There are people in the energy industry that know of the problem but chase the dollars anyway, there are people who don’t believe there is a problem and spread their misinformation, there are scientists and other people who understand the problem and want urgent action, and there maybe a few people like me who think it is already too late and no matter how much action takes place, the tippping points cannot be avoided economic activities and homes will continue to be destroyed at increasing rates. The computer programming rule is current here; when faults occur, things can get worse…. without limit.

  4. You are absolutely right.
But no one cares. They say they do, but not really if it impacts them. A managed retreat from growth and fossil fuels…… how is anyone going to sell that?
We might be an island oasis in a climate crisis and still feed everyone but we are unable to defend ourselves and we can make any pharmaceuticals. And for incomprehensible reasons have just dismantled our ability to fractionate oil at Marsden point.
Because we won’t act nature will force change on us and we won’t like it. All in the next 50 years – within the lifetime of many here.

    • So at least in honest when I say I don’t care, because I don’t.

The human race is not eternal, and only good fortune that something big hasn’t crashed into earth for a while, but luck never lasts

        • Wheel can you stop being one of those who spends a lot of time judging others forthright remarksd! The guy thinks this way, perhaps it is valid. Let him heave his say as I am sure the iWheel can you stop being one of those who spends a lot of time judging others forthright remarks! The guy thinks this way, perhaps it is valid. Let him have his say as I am sure he includes him/her self in the prognosis. If you haven’t any idea to pass on, on how we can make change and what you honestly think will happen, well hold your fire.

Bickering about stuff even when times are extreme is something that proud homo sapiens must learn to do 20:80 until we will build a big enough team to discuss and come up with a joint agreement where the main points have 90% agreement and the others can differ a little. If you haven’t any idea to pass on, about how we can make change and what you honestly think will happen, well hold your fire/

  5. 100 corporations may well cause 71% of emissions but what does that really mean for those on the ground, small and big time players who have vested interests, and ordinary folk who take so much for granted. Are we not all part of the problem? Captilalism offers riches, convenience and endless variety to those who embrace its charms. That’s the dream we’ve all been sold, rich, poor and inbetween.

But, yep, the entire show is based on the availability of carbon-based energy and the exploitation and destruction of resources that in nature are meant to keep carbon in the ground. Greta’s not wrong – blah, blah, blah from those in decision-making roles. CEO’s? Forget it – other than some meaningless corporate virtue signalling. Polititians and think-tanks? Just tinkering around the edges, isn’t it. It’s up to us ordinary folk then. Easier said than done.

“Scientist Rebellion will be on the streets between April 4th and 9th, acting like our house is on fire,” said organizers. “Because it is.”

“The prospects are ecocide, plus genocide, and require a strong social reaction. We are hundreds of scientists calling on our colleagues across disciplines to join us in the streets.” https://www.commondreams.org/news/2022/04/04/climate-revolution-scientists-launch-global-civil-disobedience-campaign

  7. ” Be honest” . Oh God.
Honesty, like charity, begins at home.
Warning! Pro farmer opinions follow. I don’t want to send any of you little Ponsonby Pansies into a triggered tither. I see many of you are tithered up already and heading down this way in a panic. All I can write then is, no hurry. Take your time. Take a chill pill. The afterlife might be awesome.

The very most disastrous thing about AO/NZ is the covert corporatising of our agriculture to facilitate urban-dweller greed. It’s interesting @ MB that you never mentioned that. You mentioned artists as being essential infrastructure, for example, but only if they agree to being eaten, surely?
We’re in deep shit alright but it’s not specifically because of climate change. It’s because you city slickers and country bumpkins refuse to see, much less comprehend, what’s right under your well plucked nose holes.
On a very, very serious note.
Our only hope, and I’m writing AO/NZ-centric here, is to show how our farmers have been subjugated and exploited for generations which has lead to toxic farmlands leading to diminishing productive performance, and corporatised farming practices leading to a tide of ignorance washing over us all for the wealth creation of one or two.
There’s a little fly ( No. Not jonk E.) which is an example of the dangers of intensive corporate farming practices.
It’s commonly called the Cluster Fly or ‘Diptera’ and it lays its eggs at the burrow entrances of earthworms where the eggs hatch into larva to eat the worm from the inside out. Then, the pupate, spread their little wings, come inside human houses where they sky dive into the breakfast cereal.
Earth worms burrow down to about 20-30cm and in so doing, they transfer soil in their casts which spread nutrients and drain and aerate the soil which allows plants to grow dumbass’s, so no! It’s not Brawndo what does it ‘Idiocracy’. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idiocracy
The Cluster fly’s best friend is short grass. Clipped down to the mud by intensive stocking of herbivores, specifically sheep. When that happens, the Cluster Fly can easily infest the essential worker worms and when the worms are gone, so will we be. And lets not forget the bees and other pollinator’s?
Why would you not mention how vital it is to urgently promote regenerative agricultural practises over the need for art, which is of course, essential but not in the immediacy.
Finally; As an example… You might think this link is off-topic, however… Think again.

  8. Talking about needing more artists.
Here is a direct quote from this months North and South magazine about artists in our village.

The article is called the Unhappy Valley, this is where I live, my husband and I are who the quote is about.
“Daniel and Kate have this totally unrealistic idea that we are some kind of idealistic artistic community in the fucking wilderness”. “Well, no, we’re not”…..
This is the Chairman of Waipori Falls. This is how artists are treated by this drug dealing, meth head, gang run Body Corporate in NZ.

We have spent over six years in this bullshit with no help from anyone to stop outright criminal behaviour. The gang running this shit show pack hunt people out of here using the cover of the BC.

Also I do have a large painting I did featured in a beautiful house in the Haven magazine this month. The article is called Slow Hand.
    Talk about two different worlds.

  9. Merkel pampered to the wokeists and sold Europe’s conscience to Putin the devil. Ukraines dead are the first mass casualties of climate change. Whats the point in trying to save the planet whilst we have monsters like Xi, Putin and Un waiting to Nuke the planet. Once we rid the world of monsters we can look at the long game, and not before.

    • no ex sonny boy, merkel made a capitalist market led decision to go with the cheapest possible option..don’t try to palm off market failure on ‘woke’, russian gas was the cheapest option and as we’re in a race to the bottom, let’s go with what ‘the market’ decides is cheapest.

  10. The truth is even if every New Zealander who in totality contributes 0.17% of climate change gases, abandoned their motorcycles, lawn mowers, gardening equipment, cars, vans, trucks, diggers, tractors, harvesters, bulldozers, freight trains, ships, aircraft and every bit of plastic that of course comes from crude oil, tomorrow, nothing will change our prospects on climate change.

We have witnessed 2 years of markedly reduced travel in all sectors worldwide thanks to covid, a reduction like this not seen for decades and it hasn’t made a difference, apparently.

The truth is the biggest contributor to climate aside from farming, motor vehicles and oil are so inextricably linked to society is not going to be replaced by electric cars, ever!

The truth is bicycles are dangerous are we are not going to be riding everywhere anyway.

And the truth us our public transport system is vastly reliant on buses which was the solution to late 1950’s NZ and yet it can accommodate less than 10% of the travelling public as it stands. So that fails for starters.

We are in this for the full ride. There is nothing that is going to stop this because one of the reasons is it’s entirely market led with tinkering from government and no government could, even if they wanted to, freeze a country and stop it from functioning to achieve climate nirvana.

    Get used to it!

  11. The northern hemisphere needs to lead this as they are the largest emitters and drivers of consumption.

If they reduced their consumption instead of playing the ‘off-setting’ game. Then we would see a real reduction in emissions and the reduction in manufacturing and environmental destruction globally.

  12. The intense digressions of the immediate issues of the day. Funny, but a lot of bother in my oldage, and that’s my most intense hatred — having to go to a well rather than turn a tap. All the inconveniences the mod-cons dismissed, which is the real reward of our industrial development (known viscerally from time spent in boarding houses and caravan parks).

The societal dynamics of now can’t deal with the challenge of global warming. This Labour Govt has built up power putting the country before self-interests, but it is devoted to caution as a first ‘principle’. Which is down to the short-sightedness of the electorate. We need leadership.

  13. Apparently the biggest contributor to the pollution that is heating our planet is having children. All the shit we buy, all the nappies, the increase in population. I bet there won’t be many that will acknowledge that. We’re to busy looking somewhere else for problems. Livestock emissions, not ours though.

  14. A lot of the propaganda for climate change comes from Russian troll farms as they stand to lose a lot when the world goes to clean solar energy as most Russian foreign exchange is around oil.

  15. Don’t worry the big corporates will solve the problem they have the most to lose.
Green voters and their supporters only moan but never solve anything.
