PODCAST: Buchanan + Manning: What can bring the Russian war against Ukraine to a close?

A View from Afar – In this podcast, political scientist Paul Buchanan and Selwyn Manning raise the question: If escalation of the Russian war against Ukraine will occur should NATO or European Union nations intervene to protect Ukraine, who or what can assist in bringing this war to a close?

For many of us around the world, Russia’s war against Ukraine raises a philosophical dilemma. Is defence of the vulnerable the correct pathway toward reestablishing peace?

And specifically, Defence… what should it look like?

Do we, as members of an international community, stand by and allow innocent people to be murdered in the name of a geopolitical doctrine or ambition? Or, do we truly have a responsibility to protect the vulnerable?

In last week’s episode we explored how Russia had advanced ahead of NATO and Europe in matters of deterrence. We also canvassed the Responsibility to Protect principles.

Today, we deep dive into how concerned nations may be able to come to Ukraine’s aid, and under what circumstances could this be possible, and how will such resolutions be defined.

  1. What NATO could have done to protect Ukraine is to NOT have manipulated them into this situation as part of their ongoing strategy to fence Russia in.
NATO were warned repeatedly by plenty of people including Noam Chomsky that the Ukraine would be invaded if they pursued this route but they ignored it as it didn’t suit their geopolitical agenda.
I’m sure there are plenty of people now warming up their keyboard to rage about how Ukraine should be able to join whatever alliance they want and in a perfect world they are of course correct. Although in a truly perfect world no such alliance should be necessary.
If you want to know how America would react in this situation, cast your mind back to the Cuban missile crisis where the Americans put nukes squarely on the table as an option.
Shame in NATO for sacrificing Ukrainians to their shitty agenda.

  2. it’s worth remembering the cuban kerfuffel was a result of the yanks basing ICBMs in turke y(which they withdrew after the crisis) another failed US attempt to poke the bear

    • Yep, I was thinking of mentioning that but figured my rant had gone on long enough.
I’m not pro Russia in the slightest, but the whole “west is the best” rhetoric is lost on me.

      • seconded jay, I fly no flag for putin I just find our medias tired rehashing of tired ww2 newsreel era tropes depressing(check out ‘british pathe’ on youtube there’s 70yrs of the same old crap there…it just underlines how 3rd rate the current western media and their staffs are..

it’s worth noting that Orwells depiction of The ministry of truth was based on his own experiences working for the BBC during WW2, initially it’s burma service…it’s also worth noting Airstrip One(the unsinkable aircraft carrier) was an outpost the US empire…people mistake 1984 for an anti-communist work it isn’t it’s anti totalitarian and concerns the postwar blocs Oceania-the US empire, Eurasia the russian dominated sphere and Eastasia chinas zone…he’d already done his anti stalinist work in the brilliant Animal Farm…rightards love to quote him but never read him..

  3. Heres a non aligned reality based observation.

At the moment Russian troops have surrounded a third of the Ukrainian forces. They will either surrender shortly or be destroyed. At that point the Western propaganda may have to face reality.

To end this conflict Ukraine needs to rid itself of Zhelensky, and his Azov mates. Russia no longer has any incentive to negotiate, it will merely hold onto what it wants, pull out elsewhere and cut off the rump Ukraine with rocketry. Ukraine as it was is no more.
