Brave New World where no-one has any cause or desire to complain – the godal? Or wil complaints be funnlled through electronics till they are compressed on a micro-chip which can be lost so easily. Nana’s New-age Nanotechnology would be a small start-up handling this with a cute and homely sound as part of the convoluted, complicated systems controlling us instead of the reverse; fudging the constant leak of sanity and stability of knowledge and systems from an informed, effective society.

Before there are anguished cries. Isn’t this likely to be a sensible rational and societally useful way for families to manage their consanguinity? (Dah, dah. New word for me.) Good for them and us to get their infections over rather than suffering end on end isolation really, and their own poor housing could make it more diffisult being stuck at home. It could be that some of them ‘hot-bed’ as they work their various shift hours.

Other factors were the age restrictions on her visa (the UK’s Youth Mobility Scheme is only open to people aged 18 to 30) and a study opportunity presented to her partner.
It was clear some people’s desire for an overseas experience was stronger than the idea of waiting out the pandemic and they were also banking on border restrictions easing soon…

Infometrics principal economist Brad Olsen was worried a “brain drain could see New Zealand’s already tight labour market and intense skill shortages be exacerbated” – stymieing economic growth and limiting the country’s productivity.
Olsen said the country would have to work “incredibly hard” to keep talent onshore – especially nurses and construction workers.

It sounds like an excellent time to support people wanting to get tertiary education at polytechnics, let’s go back to having those, for specific skills that are needed in NZ.

  4. The news on revised border controls. Another story about Kiwis making repeat applications for mIQ. Have there been stats on the nationalities coming into NZ and for what purpose I wonder ? Tourists ought to have spaces allocated but Kiwis should have a special large quota. Should have been.

    Old stats 14 May 2020 https://www.stats.govt.nz/news/nz-citizens-migrating-home-in-record-numbers
New Zealand citizens are returning to, and staying in, New Zealand in record numbers, as the COVID-19 pandemic spreads, Stats NZ said today.
Annual migrant arrivals of New Zealand citizens are provisionally estimated at 42,800 for the year ended March 2020, with almost half of these arriving between December 2019 and March 2020. This is the highest annual number on record.
All provisional estimates are subject to revision however, especially as some New Zealand citizens who recently returned may head back overseas once border restrictions are relaxed and international travel resumes.
Annual migrant departures of New Zealand citizens are provisionally estimated at 35,700 for the year ended March 2020. This is well below the annual average of 52,800 since 2001.
As a result, net migration of New Zealand citizens for the year ended March 2020 is provisionally estimated at 7,200.
“This is the highest annual figure on record, and is a reversal of the long-standing historical pattern where more New Zealand citizens depart than arrive,” population insights senior manager Brooke Theyers said.

In 2019 there were 272,436 immigrants from the United Kingdom living in New Zealand.
The second largest migrant group in the country were Chinese immigrants, with a population of
    around 95 thousand people.
