Neil Young vs Spotify vs Joe Rogan vs free speech

Let me start by acknowledging that Neil Young can take his art to make a stand (and a better commercial deal) as is his right.

Let me acknowledge I think Joe Rogan is wrong about vaccines.

Let me acknowledge that Spotify is a corporate vampire who pays its artists poorly.

All that said, for me this latest virtue signal to cancel Spotify highlights the inability for the Left to even engage in debate any longer.

The power afforded to them via Twitter lynch mobs has created a false sense of power they are abusing.

Rogan has a larger audience than any existing news cable show!

The fundamental danger of the woke Left constantly screaming that white men are the problem is that they’ll soon become it.

TDB Recommends NewzEngine.com

Woke commercial media have purged white males with their dogma and they’ve ended up going to Rogan.

Rather than alienate that audience even further – why not actually engage with Rogan and debate him? He’s not Goebbels, he can be reasoned with, hell he said he’d vote for Bernie!

The problem is the Woke Left have given up on winning people over and instead prefer to censor, cancel and deplatform!

Rather than cancel Rogan why not debate him?

Because the Left forgot how to!

  1. In a better world maybe Martyn–but in this current existential COVID shitstorm, I feel a certain pride in the old school rockers stand, “last chance power drive” to quote the Boss.

For fucks sake, Joni and Neil are Polio virus survivors as far as I can ascertain. I had class mates at school that wore callipers on their legs to give them some sense of mobility and inclusion. Rogan is the product of neo liberal hegemony and post modernist philosophy where anything goes. Hey, he fronted a great TV show too–“Fear Factor” what a public self pleasurer is all I can say.

  2. I have to say that emotionally, I want to support Neil Young and Joni Mitchell, but you don’t make anyone any wiser by cancelling them. So, rationally, I deeply regret this latest example of the ‘Liberal Taliban’ attempt at cancelling yet another person for ‘thought crime’. In total agreement with you this time, Martyn Bradbury.

  3. Neil Young is a bit of a prick..Evidence
    1. In 1985 in an interview he claimed AIDS was caused by Gays, and he claimed he didn’t want to be served by fag-ots(his words)
2.He sold 50,% of his music rights for $150 million to a group owned by Blackstone investment group, who are on the Human Rights watch list, due to their human right abuses…no problems, eh Neil
    3. Wrote an album about GMOs being bad, while being part owner of of numerous GMO corporations

Joe Rogan actually debates people on his show on vaccines, with the world’s experts…

  4. Spotify exec’s – Who makes us more money, Joe Rogan or Neil Young? Accounts Dept – Joe Rogan!

Spotify exec’s – Tell Neil to shove off then.

End of the Spotify principles story!

Having said that Spotify’s market capitalization fell about $2.1 billion USD over a three-day span this week after Young got axed.

Young suffered from polio as a kid in 1951 apparently, and we all know that vaccination made the world a far better place for the rest of us who never did because of it.

I am cynical at the best of times but I don’t think Neil Young is woke nor do I think could he care less if he made another million or not. I think he means what he says about vaccine misinformation from well learned personal experience.

Rogan is entertaining, no doubt, but his love for parasite medication to cure viral diseases puts him up there with Liz Gunn. I’m sure his coat is very shiny however!

    • That loss in market capitilisation is only on paper. It typically happens with wall street traded stock where, at a hint of a scandal, the jackals circle with low offers for shares to woe the timid and those afraid of larger share value drops, to sell shares at a low price.

Went from $174.04 down to $164.24 and has since rebounded to $171.23. Based on an average daily stock turnover of 1,500,000 shares that drop cost shareholders, those that traded their shares 10 cents cheaper, $150,000 in lost potential revenue.

Interestingly the highest the traders pushed spotify share price was $385.11

Spotify stock is currently rated at between hold and buy.

Am surprised at the low membership figures. Thought it would be higher. Like most tech companies, they are not making any money (lost $500,000,000 this year) so the shares are basically worthless but traded only on hoping another sucker will buy any shares you might own, at a higher rate than what they were bought at. Bit like Bitcoin, Apple and Tesla. A big ponzi scheme.

“As of December 31, 2020, its platform included 345 million monthly active users and 155 million premium subscribers in 93 countries and territories. The company was founded in 2006 and is based in Luxembourg, Luxembourg.”

    • Talk about ignorance. Said parasite thingee comes in two forms. One for us, the other for animals. The one for us won a Nobel prize in medicine just a handful of years ago. The one for us is not specifically meant for Covid, but…

      • Learn what the difference between a parasite & a virus is before being so confident. The total lack of peer-reviewed controlled trials to support the claims regarding Ivermectin & Covid should be enough for any thinking person to make the obvious conclusion about the stuff.

        • The evidence can be simply proven Bonnie. I”ll have a triple dose of the Pfitzer virus vaccine and AO can have a triple dose of the parasite vaccine.
          Ignorance is bliss.

        • First off, this is not about the difference between one thing and another. This is about one thing, that is highly effective in one area, proving to have benefit in another area. This is a bonus, a bonus that is worth high level, peer reviewed trials. But given that this thingee costs pennies on the dollar, then lower level trials are all we have to work with. Nonetheless, said trial(s), at this stage, points to effectiveness.

But speaking of peer reviewed controlled trials, I like that you know of such things. I myself, have had trouble in finding such high quality proof for – berts choice. Perhaps, you can do us all a favour and provide us with the peer reviewed controlled trials of bert’s choice, given that this choice is the predominant choice in the world today. We deserve to know it, we deserve to see it, and perhaps you, or bert, could be the first to showcase this, independent of manufacturer, high-level proof to the world.

Finally, given that we are in the most dangerous age since WWII, one would think that we would be searching high and low for medicinal cures. Thus, it should be alarming to all that such a search is limited to one direction only and that even worse, if someone dares go outside this unofficially anointed direction, then there’s hell to pay for that person (and their choice). Strange, strange world.

          • most pharma research goes into cancer drugs…why is that you say gagarin, I’ll tell you I reply….because rich westerners pay massive amounts fr drugs that MAY and only MAY have a tiny incremental effect..this starves other medical RandD of funds.

and of course the search for ‘new applications’ for old drugs as their patents run down.

  5. “The fundamental danger of the woke Left constantly screaming that white men are the problem is that they’ll soon become it.”

A racist by any other name [“Left”] is still a racist. ‘The Left’, whomever that refers to seem obsessed with race a gender – an indication of prevented and base minds.

  6. rogan is free to belive what he likes, artists are free to sell their music how and wear they like, twatterati lynch mobs only have ‘power’ because we don’t ignore them, every time a journo reports a twatter ‘outrage’ (including the author of this piece) you empower the hard of thinking thus encouraging future twatter storms….YOU make them feel important and relevant…of course a social media kerfuffle is the kind of easy story jurnos reach for on a slow news day, minimum cost to employer, minimum input from jurno (cut n paste basically)..our attention gives ‘cancellers’ power, just ignore the twerps and consume the culture you like.

  7. Problem is people like Rogan are good debaters, and publicly debating them gives them unwarranted credibility. This is why scientists won’t publicly debate with creationists. Just because you’re “right” doesn’t mean you can “win” the debate.

  8. must say NY supported farm aid singing a song about johnny rotton/sid vicious in front of a crowd of rednecks is bravery by any standard, he wrote ‘hey hey my my my’ in the first place, he worked with devo when most successful musicians of the day thought they’d catch a nasty rash off ‘those punker kids’…possibly not an angel but free to sell his music wherever he likes.

  9. The Left hasn’t forgotten how to debate, they just no longer have to. The Left has been co-opted (by establishment power) into concentrating or cancelling or censoring, those who challenge any narrative constructed by the powerful.

Those not willing to debate are not at all confident in the position they hold.

  10. In 6 to 12 months max we will all be unvaccinated against Cv regardless of whether you took the jab or not ( we can check back in 6 months on my assertions if you like )
Once the promises of the Pfizer magic juice have lost their appeal we will all be looking for the Rogan branded horse juice

Just my take . Let’s check back in June

  11. What’s not being mentioned here is that Neil Young has sold his Music Portfolio for $50 million dollars so is not sacrificing his “Art” or profits on Spotify? Neil Young is also a self confessed anti gay“faggot hater” & a advocate for Gun rights & ownership? But you never hear that mentioned by his cancel culture apologists, oh no, they would rather go & denigrate a Pod caster, Joe Rogan who advocates for free choice & personal responsibility & is not anti vax? Something Djokovic is as well. And who did Neil Young sell the rights of his Music portfolios too? Blackrock, that scumbag, heinous Corporation thats buying up all the Housing in the USA & raising rents & evicting people? What a Trailblazer Neil Young is, keep on rocking in the USA you hypocrite?

  12. Some thoughts about how to cope with each other and talk. Bit long but might find it offers something new.
In this current shitstorm of whatever, we have to look at who we are disagreeing with and try to see their point of concern and humanity to get an understanding. We are getting too much like life echoing fiction; like people fashioning their own ‘reality tv’ show which cancelled out people on what appeared to be the whims of the participants, but actually and blacker, was to the decision of the people guiding the direction of the show and emotions of the audience.

Feeling like lampooning everything I have thought of a theme song for those who are a bit OTT. They are wanting to be unsullied by the idiot behaviour and beliefs of the others, but that applies to both sides, each cancelling out the other.
So – ‘I’m too sexy for my Shirt’ seems appropriate to represent both sides’ attitude by Right Said Fred.

I think we are allowing ourselves to be manipulated, splintered into brittle fragments, and we’ll cut ourselves if we aren’t careful. Health and Safety have nothing in their handbook to cope with this, probably they are part of the narrative. How to go forward? I thought back to Eric Berne and his Games that People Play for a way of putting the behaviours in context. And I’m OK You’re OK by Thomas Harris (not the one who wrote Silence of The Lambs). Constant irritation with the proponents of woke doesn’t help us to get a working practice to deal with the ongoing shocks of ordinary life that is becoming more and more like a science fiction novel.

We need a different approach and I’ve put some links together that date back to the 1960s. We haven’t followed up as a community on the application of transactional analysis which seemed promising. And what we are going through now seems to echo the changeable times of the 1960s when young people were looking for new ways of thinking and doing things, with a war hanging over their heads then. Perhaps Neil Young is having a second go.

Book summary of ‘I’m OK You’re OK’ by Thomas A. Harris
Transactional analysis delineates three ego-states (parent, adult and child) as the basis for the content and quality of interpersonal communication.
“Happy childhood” notwithstanding, says Harris, most of us are living out the not ok feelings of a defenseless child wholly dependent on ok others (parents) for stroking and caring.
At some stage early in our lives we adopt a “position” about ourselves which very significantly determines how we feel about ourselves, particularly in relation to other people. And for a huge portion of the population, that position is that I’m Not OK-You’re OK. This negative Life Position, shared by successful and unsuccessful people alike, contaminates our rational adult potential, leaving us vulnerable to the inappropriate, emotional reactions of our child and the uncritically learned behavior programmed into our parent.
By exploring the four basic “life positions,” we can radically change our lives.

  13. Neil Young wrote “Keep on rockin’ the free world”. If you can’t see the ironic humour in that, then there’s no hope for you.

He’s in the same hypocritical category as Bono, Bob Geldof, Peter Garret and Roger Waters: They made a name for themselves protesting against authority, got rich, moved their money to tax havens and now shout down anyone – protesting against authority. LOL

Oh and Joe Rogan conducts long form interviews – he’d interviewed various people on the subject of Covid 19, each with their own perspective. Which one do you disagree with?

  14. true he did make ‘milo the kiddy fiddler’ accidentally confess to his approval of pedarasty and his silence protecting hollywood nonces …. so good on joe on that score

  15. The problem with the WokeLeft is not what they are talking about but what they are NOT talking about: inequality, wage stagnation, the ‘home’ crisis, the climate catastrophy, etc. Joe Rogan’s problem is he’s a guy with a HUGE audience allowing guys with dangerous ideas to get those ideas around to low info guys. Not sure the best thing though – Kyle Kulinski is the guy who got Bernie & Cornell West on, here’s his take https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksWcjjUbgQE

  16. This is selective outrage and is more to do the power and credibility struggle in the US media and cultural landscape (and in the wider anglosphere). Rogan is eclectic, sure he’s interviewed people with questionable ideas but in addition to inviting establishment people on his show like Fauci he HAS interviewed multiple others such as Dr Osterholm (now on Biden’s COVID-19 Advisory Board), Sanjay Gupta, Peter Hotez, Rhonda Patrick et al.

I’d suggest that ALL the mainstream US outlets regularly interview people with questionable ideas, just look at the rehabilitation of John Bolton.

Rogan’s is a guy who likes to have interesting conversations and he’s not a partisan hack. Incidentally if Neil Young is so virtuous why is he sending his fans to Amazon, that well know bastion of labour and unions rights, small business and community support which always pays a fair share in taxes.

    • Exactly Tui, well said.

Everyone knows, or feels, that there’s two sides to every story. Present just one side, the establishment view, and dismiss anything else, portray it as “misinformation” (or worse) and people instinctively suspect that they are being bullshitted.

Perhaps if our legacy media were willing to courageously present a range of opinion they might not be failing and the thirst for alternatives, some of which is inevitably crazy, would be largely satisfied. It’s a massive issue and the broader and long term consequences to our pluralistic democracies shouldn’t be underrated.

  17. Neil Youngs is embarrassing himself here by throwing a tanty from the safety of his high security mansion

Why the need to cancel anyone anyhow? If you think you are right and they are wrong then debate them FFS

Best outcome would for NY to go on JR’s show and they can talk face to face in real time.

  18. Nobody is obliged to engage with a peddler of misinformation, that’s some “sealioning” bullshit. (look it up). As for canceling, I never canceled Rogan or spotify cause I never listened to them in the first place. I’m going to start canceling people who say “cancel” cause I’m really fucking sick of that word.

    • It’s not all about you Knarf. Three “I”s in two sentances?
Neil Young tried to cancel Neil Young, not just cancel him from his own viewing but cancel him from every one else as well.
Apart for the obvious stupidity (don’t take a peashooter to a gunfight) his attempted blackmail and the subsequent publicity means that Joe Rogan, far from being cancelled, has more viewers than ever. Idiot!

  19. Just going to keep posting Breaking Points updates (as long as I’m allowed) as they seem to be one of the few outlets covering this story in the round. esp highlighting the media double standard (think WMD, Russiagate, Ukraine), culture war myopia and public discourse legacy that is being conjured for the future.
