Netflix is one of the biggest streaming services on the internet right now, and definitely the most popular and famous, with over 200 million subscribers worldwide. It is considered a fortune 500 company, ranked 164th on the list, and is one of the top-performing companies on the stock market. 

In 2012, Netflix began producing their own, original shows, some of which have become hugely popular and highly-estimated. In this article, we are going to take a look at a few of the best Netflix original live-action shows ever produced.

Queen’s Gambit

The Queen’s Gambit (2020) is a mini-series, adapted from Walter Stone Trevis’ novel of the same name. It is a bildungsroman, period drama which tells the story of Beth Harmon, portrayed by Anya Taylor-Joy. Beth Harmon is a chess prodigy, who is quickly becoming one of the pre-eminent chess players in the world. On her journey to the top, she must face off against some of the greatest grandmasters of chess, as well as deal with alcoholism and drug abuse. 

The show not only delves deep into the psychology of the characters, but also the intricacies of chess. Chess is one of the most popular games in the world, and is frequently featured on the betting sites listed here. It is one of the most played games, with over 600 million chess players worldwide. 

Daredevil

Before the launch of Disney+, Netflix acquired the rights to produce a few television shows, based off of some of Marvel’s lesser known heroes. The first show in the “Defender” series was also the best. Daredevil chronicles the origin story of Matt Murdock. Matt was blinded as a boy, however, the chemicals which blinded him also enhanced his hearing and also gave him a sort of sixth sense, called radar vision. The young boy learned how to control his newly acquired power and became one of the night-time vigilantes patrolling the streets of Hell’s Kitchen and facing off against the Kingpin. Daredevil, the show, was followed by a couple of other Netflix originals, including Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and the Punisher, all of which eventually culminated in the grand finale, The Defenders.

In 2021, Squid Game quickly became one of the most watched shows on Netflix, and the most streamed show in the world. This Korean show centers around a competition, where adults are forced to play children’s games in order to be acquitted of their debt. Those who win the game are free from debt, while the losers are faced with deadly consequences. 

Squid Game is now, officially, the most watched show on Netflix, and the most streamed show I the world, with over a billion viewing hours logged during the first four weeks after the show was launched. 

The Witcher

Based on the Polish book series by author, Andrzej Sapkowski, the Witcher is a high-fantasy show, starring Henry Cavil as the titular Witcher. It draws inspiration from the great sword-and-sorcery stories like Conan the Barbarian, Elric of Melnibone, etc. Coming off the heels of the dreadful Game of Thrones ending, The Witcher was a breath of fresh air for fans of fantasy who still had a bitter taste in their mouth after the ending of one of the biggest shows.
