Waatea News Column: What are we going to do with the unvaccinated?

One of the most painful aspects of this pandemic has been the two different realities our community has been split into.

The vaccinated resent those not vaccinated because it limits their freedom while the unvaccinated resent being excluded from society for freedom of choice.

The race to vaccinate never asks the question ‘what are we going to do with those who refuse to take the vaccine’.

I believe that after all the arguing and constant offers of free vaccinations delivered into hard to reach locations and communities, what are we going to do with those who point blank refuse the vaccination for whatever reason.

What do we do with them?

The 5% hardcore who just won’t.

I think we have to show them a lot of love and humility.

I think we have to ensure anyone resigning for refusing the vaccination are given 4 weeks wages plus there should be no stave down period for welfare.

I think that adding economic stress at a time if great anger is a recipe for dangerous radicalization.

Read the unvaccinated’s fury and violent rhetoric while they still had jobs. Imagine that rage when you lose money.

We must find ways to always keep immunization as an option alongside infrastructure to allow for testing to also be a substitute entry point to the wider social life.

After such a divisive and angry time we need to focus on the well being of people we disagree with.

That’s true healing.

  1. The right wing ( arse hole ) mantra that is “freedom of choice” which we must all know by now is simply a logical fallacy to cover up plots to drain money out of people who work hardest and get ever less for their efforts while exploitative billionaires scoop up yet more billions.
    “Freedom of Choice ” is a Chinese finger trap for common sense.
    It’s common sense to get bloody vaccinated. Let’s be frank. Ask anyone in an iron lung how polio’s working out for them? It’s NOT common sense to spout moral outrage at being denied the freedom to be a diseased dick head spreading a novel virus about. Do they need love and humility or a swift kick up their dumb arses?
    Speaking personally? I don’t like injection needles being poked into me. God only knows how junkies do it? And yet I have tattoo’s…? And I had them done by a Sasak warrior in Lombok who was also the head man of his village ! What was I thinking!? Christ knows what the ink was? Shoe polish? No, can’t have been. No one there wore shoes.

The ‘procedure’ took quite some time and it hurt like all be-Jesus! Once my wriggling and Ooo Aaaah-ing got on his nerves he wandered off into his fabulous house covered in skulls, bones, monkeys, vines, banana palms and sundry birds to return with a small white pill that looked home made which I more than eagerly swallowed. One explosion of warm orchids in my guts later and he could have ran over me in a tuk tuk full of Sumo wrestlers and I’d a laughed my head off.
    I’ve had two covid injections against c-19. I literally felt nothing. The following morning I had a vaguely sore arm muscle where the needle went in. It felt like a mild bruise. Then nothing… I never felt unwell at all.
    Get vaccinated! Or you might die. Or you might give the virus to someone else who might die.
    Getting vaccinated against a deadly virus that’s clearly gaining momentum as it mutates isn’t about values, beliefs, ideologies or conspiracies. It’s about being lucky enough to be able to take advantage of first world medicines to help protect yourself against a virus that might kill you.

      I cannot believe the numbers of usually big tough people that have turned to whimps over a simple, verifiable injection. They are not all from the unvaccinated generation, breast fed till 5, home schooled etc. So what is the explanation apart from some weird mass psychosis or social media herding?

      There are workplace issues that need proper consideration–but–this is a fucking international health emergency that is only going to get worse. Thanks to climate change we have extinctions, habitat destruction and resulting cross species infection.

      I have two older colleagues who use their arms for legs, with sticks obviously, due to Polio, and had various school class mates that needed callipers to walk ok. I had every injection going, from TB on, and a liquid Polio one. So my life experience is different from some of the cry babies I guess. I don’t resent non vaccinated people for any loss of my freedom, I am down on them for being fuckwits and not using their cognitive abilities to a wider extent. They are embarrassing more than anything.

  2. You do realise that the jabbed spread COVID too.!? It’s actually all a bit ridiculous this one size fits all approach. What are we going to do with the overweight and the smokers is a more valid question. The whole mass coercion, no jab no job, crime against humanity should have run out of steam months ago if not for the useful idiots. But those useful idiots are just authoritarians. My position will potentially cost hundreds of thousands of dollars (employer dependent) and not one taken lightly but kinda looking forward to going on unemployment and homeschooling the kids. Complete withdrawal from this dictatorship until we get rounded up, I suppose.

    • You’ll probably find unemployment not quite so much fun, generally to get a benefit they like you to be virtually destitute & if you support a non-working partner, they’ll need to submit to the attentions of our “caring” welfare bureaucracy too. The mountain of paperwork is pretty daunting if you have any kind of financial assets. Fun times!

    • You donot seem to understand most accept us vaccinated people know we are not bullet proof but the hope is we spend less time in hospital. It is the same as wearing a seat belt it will.not stop an accident but it will stop worse consequences

      • Non sense comparison. The side effects of wearing a seat belt are zero and there was YEARS and YEARS of ‘proof of the solution’ before it was introduced.
        So TOTALLY comparing apples with (probably) jandles.

      • What Kevin said, and also no car won’t drive without the seatbelt being engaged. Why do you think that is – i.e. the car even tells you it isn’t engaged, yet it won’t stop you driving the car regardless? It beeps at you, it has a warning light, but at the end of the day it does not infringe on your freedom. Think about it, before answering.

    • Let’s inform our resident slow-learner, Off White, *yet again* that his objection in regard to vaccination and contagion is of little consequence.
      The vaccine does reduce transmission significantly, even though it does not eliminate it. Secondly, the primary reason for vaccination is to achieve lower hospitilisation rates and, in particular vastly lower death rates.

          I do not know what is going on or the definitive answer-solution, though these faux-vaxs are NOT the best answer.
          But I’m fairly sure I’m being lied to by the Govt-media and the ‘powers that be’ for some other aim, which I guess we’ll accidentally see-realise, when it’s all too late, as per usual.

        • YI work in a research facility & we always publish our results on YouTube. Forget peer review journals, amateur videos are the way to share “research”. Yeah, right. Maybe if you get your immunity naturally, you might feel more inclined to start paying attention to what scientists & health professionals say. Probably not, but I’m sure you will find it a learning experience.

          • Richard, I guess you’re not talking about the Pfizer vaccine studies that won’t be released for 55 years. Or the Pfizer trial whistleblower in the British medical journal. Or operation warpspeed. Or provisional approval due to novel technology.

            • I don’t think that 55 year period (being called for by the FDA) is set in stone yet. But in a just world, a people-first world, this act would be front-page news. Same for the whistleblower, that is big news also.

    Reverse the ratio with 95% of Africans involuntarily unvaxxed.
    It is the deliberate failure to vax the poor by capitalism that keeps the virus mutating.
    It amounts to eugenics and a genocide of the poor.
    The question is why shouldn’t the involuntary unvaxxed of the world choose socialism rather than death?

    • Yes, talk of socialism also brings in immediate detail like forcing the pharmaceutical companies to drop patents on COVID drugs, and produce at cost, or assist Cuba to up production…or nationalising and socialising COVID drug production, similar to when consumer factories were converted to war effort production in the anti fascist WWII period.

      Neo liberal hegemony means that such measures have not even flitted across the consciousness of our glorious leaders in OECD countries. It is time they got a wake up.

I despair of the rank ignorance driving peoples perspective in this, and countries like the USA. and largely all the old school British colonies… Bloody mindedness is a personal choice that is utterly irrelevant to whatever political philosophy one cares to espouse… The current trend towards making a virtue of ignorance, and self obsession is, again, irrelevant to shades of political structures… All I’m seeing is the inevitable result of neoliberal (exploitation) economics reshaping society in ways that are progressively destroying our ability to think like grown ups… I got trapped here during lockdown, and the difference between now and when I was last here(2014) is bluntly obvious.. By 2009, things were starting to get nasty, but the pace of degradation has been accelerating at a compounding rate since I left. NZ is now one of the most unbalanced, and precarious places I’ve ever experienced, and it isn’t even slowing down.. The most expensive place to live with some of the lowest wages I can get compared to everywhere I’ve been… And this is what people think is socialism? People need to wake the hell up and see what has been done to them, which BTW, had absolutely nothing to do with socialism either…

      • Successive years of a National government and it’s capitalism has created the low wage high price economy. Hell, even Jim Bolger recognises it now. Labeen are trying to rectify this with implementation of a living wage. Unfortunately issues like fuel and housing prices are global issues although I note Luxon was quick with the soundbite yesterday that he will fix those issues.

  6. There is unfortunately that all too true quote of leading a horse to water but not being able to force it to drink.
    There are those in society who are, as I will call them, stupid enough to believe every conspiracy theory on the planet.
    Now whilst some theories may well hold credence there are those that I think are bloody stupid and question as to why people are stupid enough to take such ‘theories’ as unquestioned ‘Gospel’.
    I am a pro vaxxer but have a friend who is an anti-vaxxer. When I told her I had had both vaccines against COVID she resorted to scare tactics and told me I would be dead in 48 days times. More than 48 days since I am still above ground She told me two nurses at Whakatane Hospital had had a vaccine and were dead within 24 hours of the vaccine. And of course she mentioned about a house-keeper who passed in a driveway after cleaning a house.
    I was puzzled especially with the 48 day timeline and re-read the pamphlet provided by the DOH that said any side effects would be in 48 hours(not days).
    She now claims that if she was in contact with me face to face she would have an allergic reaction to me because of the chemicals from the COVID vaccine. Really I wonder where she gets that stupid idea but can only assume it’s because she believes the bullshit of others.
    A few days ago she claimed the NZ Police can come onto our property and take us away to conduct experiments on us. She regularly talk about “them or they” but doesn’t elaborate on whom the “them and they” are. I think if a conspiracy theorist told her that the moon was made of green cheese and COVID could be cured by consuming huge amounts of green cheese she is inclined to believe them.
    But then I am on a different tangent again. Though whilst that refuse to get vaccinated exasperate us and hold us to ransom due to their pure selfishness I doubt any effort on anyone’s part will change their thinking on the matter.
    And so whilst the majority in hospital with COVID are obviously the ones unvaccinated then we have to accept the fact they are nothing short of bloody stupid idiots who are so selfish but expect the over-stretched health system to cater to their needs alone.
    And quite frankly I am so over these selfish unvaccinated individuals because due to THEIR actions they are making OUR lives more difficult. In other words to the unvaccinated do not expect sympathy from me or anyone else because you chose to be either lazy or stupid.

  13. Information is king (or queen) and that is the problem here, we are not getting enough information. Other than that, this vaccine-induced divide is not a natural divide. This didn’t have to go this way, thus I go back to the obvious, the more, we the people are divided, the weaker we get!
