Late Stage Capitalism Lockdown: Covid has exposed the bleeding gums of our inequality

Late Stage Capitalism in 3 shots

Average house price is now $1million and no one bats an eyelid.

Industries that have relied on cheap migrant workers have the audacity to complain in public and demand Government support!

The Death Cult Capitalists still try to soften us up to ‘live’ with the deaths and sickness as mere collateral damage sacrificed on the alter of the economy.

After shitting on anti-Vaxxers for over a year we now try to coax them to get it so we can go back to international travel for the holidays.

Covid will be spread by the traveling rich but paid for by the overcrowded poor.

Food banks are seeing a 200% increase in demand, beaten partners flee bubbles of domestic violence, the collective psyche of the country want to lynch the Wanaka couple while Auckland fantasizes over what fast food they will first buy.

Covid has exposed the bleeding gums of our inequality in a way bandaids and half measure social policy simply won’t cauterize.

The petty outrages of Twitter make me want to remain socially distanced from you still.

  1. I am angry that with the huge let down this present government has been to those it is supposed to represent Judith Collins spends time attacking a leading scientist . National should be riding a wave to victory

  2. Yes, life sucks, but death until I find out otherwise, seems to suck even more. Old school Existentialists have a lot of wisdom to offer on how to cope with with our all too brief lives. And too many will be short indeed if we do not keep fighting COVID till the bitter end.

We have to start “calling a spade a spade”–and describing capitalist ownership and accumulation of unearned wealth as oppression and exploitation of the majority of New Zealanders. There are layers of bull shit in NZ that obscure the neo liberal state and greedy 1%ers as being the main enemy.

Part of it is post colonial fall out and denial of long standing damage done to Māori. Part of it is the aspirational desire for “being your own boss” and setting up thousands of small businesses every year beholden to banks, that crap out. Part of it is selfish, air headed commodity fetishism (consumerism) that Rogernomics ushered in. Sure you can shop 24/7 online now, but a weekend that was purely for sport, socialising and worship (if you were of that bent) was quite a good thing in retrospect.

“Other People” can be reprehensible and bone headed but we have to try or it is “Mad Max Fury Road” sooner rather than later!

Don’t forget it also was time to see family, do things with the kids, and DIY around a home that the couple had saved a deposit for, and which gave them permanence, a place to stand and a neighbourhod to belong to. It wasn’t too bad now we think of it .

      • Yep, and +1 to you and the Tiger. On a positive note, I come across more and more younger people looking for what we experienced and what they now yearn for. They can see it’s all unsustainable. The mathematics of it all have never added up and the longer it goes on, the more violent the future is likely to be.

  3. This is worth a read: https://off-guardian.org/2021/09/12/covids-willing-executioners/
There is a clear pivoting now to demonise those who don’t want to be vaxxed since they are somehow a threat on those that have. This will mark the first time in history where those that are vaccinated require protection from those that are not vaccinated. But here we are, and it’s real. The President of the US has recently said it:
    https://youtu.be/WB1Awuu_DGc?t=501
And if you think that was one of his gaffes, the Vice President has now confirmed it:

I no longer am even trying to understand what the hell is going on, especially given that these vaccines actually increase infection rates in the 40-79 age group – the main group affected by the virus (see page 18):
    https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1016465/Vaccine_surveillance_report_-_week_36.pdf
Maybe someone here can explain what is actually going on.

You mean Figure 2(b): Death within 28 days of Covid test? The graph clearly shows that deaths from Covid-19 increase with age, and this is the case EVEN for those older age groups who have been vaccinated. A point to note is that for these older age groups deaths for unvaccinated are 3x higher.

Figure 2 (d) is much the same: older people are hospitalized more than younger people, but for unvaccinated it is 3x higher (some 5x higher for younger people).

What does it mean? On the face of it that the vaccine (reported in the data) is not 100% effective in preventing death (or hospitalization) in older age groups – some I suspect have existing respiratory issues or co-morbidities – but that it helps REDUCE deaths. But vaccination would also appear to help with hospitalization rates, across all age groups. That I suspect is an important public health concern since hospitals can’t afford to allocate all their resources to Covid-19. Try getting cancer treatment or respiratory surgery on children when hospitals are on high alert. Even getting to a GP is a mission.

What’s going on? A global pandemic. I am pretty sure I’ve heard said here in NZ that vaccination is the best tool we have in the toolbox, or something to that effect. I don’t think I’ve heard anyone say vaccination is 100% effective in preventing death, but among older people who catch the virus it appears they have better chance of surviving. And its reported to greatly reduce infection rates, although long-term effectiveness and variants remain issues. We are in a bit of a pickle really. Maybe someone has a better solution.

  4. Gekko tells the annual meeting.
“Greed is right, greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit,” he says to applause.
“This is in the NZ labour party 2017-2023 manifesto. and we don’t give a fuck!”

  5. Food banks are seeing a 200% increase in demand and beaten partners are fleeing bubbles of domestic violence because people can’t work, can’t earn and so are crashing into debt, violence and misery.

Tell us again how Lockdowns are helping the poor? Maybe, just maybe those travelling rich that you so often shit on might just have twigged that the endless cycle of lockdowns is doing harm to all of us with the poor and precariat paying a price much more visible and confronting.

If you’re a couple of semi skilled workers pulling in somewhere around $30 hour, the $600 a week cover is no where near enough. After five weeks of lockdown a low income family could easily be looking at $5K of debt which more likely than not will be on a credit card so interest rates are north of 20% p.a. which means that they’re likely stuck in that cycle of debt for a few years to come especially as Labour’s stunning economic mismanagement has seen rent and the cost of housing go stratospheric.

  6. ………………After shitting on anti-Vaxxers for over a year we now try to coax them to get it so we can go back to international travel for the holidays

and that shitting on people who are vaccine resistant was done to camouflage the fact that even if they had wanted to get that vacc they could not for lack of stock.

The vaccination drive started in earnest 28 July – before that people could not even book an appointment, that is now ONLY some 8 weeks ago.
Dear Leader and her handmaidens were bailed out by Spain and Denmark, as without these two purchases much feted over the last few days, we would again run out of vaccines as this useless as Government could not or did not negotiate appropriate deliveries for 5 million people – in terms of Pfizer, some 10 million doses, not a million here and there as it is atm.
When your Dear Leader complains about ‘managing demand’ in a small island nation of 5 millions the issue is not the 10% of hard core Antivaccer but the problem lies with the Leader who thought she could ‘manage demand’ to suit their own agenda.
So the best this Government could do for a few days, is to stop the fearmongering and simply order vaccines and deliver them when they come in to anyone who wants them.
