Law and order: Act Party wants checks on gang members’ benefits

The Act party wants electronic income checks for gang members to prevent them from spending any welfare money on alcohol, gambling or tobacco.

Reviews of similar schemes in Australia and New Zealand – where it applies only to young people – are split on how effective they are.

The policy is part of a raft of proposals Act is releasing today in its law and order policy document.

Thank Christ for that.

With all his defence of the individual against the state, freedom of speech and anti big brother over reach, David Seymour was starting to sound barely acceptable, thankfully the frustration of National stealing all ACTs attack lines has goaded ACT in reminding everyone what a pack of dead eyes fascists we always knew they were.

ACT are demanding an electronic Purity test that bypasses the rights of the individual for an online Big Brother who will punish the individual for private choice vices?

Who the fuck are they? The heel clicking nanny state who punishes like a self flagellating mother superior on meth?

That’s who ACT are becoming and appealing to is it?

The infantizisation of adults requiring the mass surveillance state staring over them like the lidless eye of a Puritan God scorching the individual in a sacrificial ceremony to civil rights all for the bloodlust of the lynch mob!

WHERE IS YOUR GOD NOW DAMIEN GRANT!

Thank the little baby Jesus that David’s intellectual decency has finally been pierced by the fang glinting little Nu Zilind stormtroopers who lurk under his List position.

To expand the power of the State so enormously over the individual, no matter how bad they are supposed to be for some red neck tough on crime virtue signal is a reminder of how hypercritical ACTs ideology is becoming as they roll in the mud with Judith for the most reactionary right wing votes.

How ugly.

Who else will ACT demand should face mass surveillance scrutiny from the Orwellian state they claim to champion against?

Goose stepping never looked so schizophrenic.

      • I notice his ACT site bio mentions nothing of Nga Puhi. It does get trotted out for political purposes but I have yet to see Seymour come out with anything in support of gang member rehabilitation other than punative measures. I wonder what his new policies on white collar crime or abusive landlords may be, electronic monitoring?

  1. The fascist solution to poverty caused by the greedies?

Favourite observation, the policy was announced from an outlet of NZ’s most destructive drug! The ACT dickwits didn’t even make an association with the name ‘Danger Danger Bar”!

  2. A gong show of a policy with enough holes that you could steer the mv evergreen through it.

I expected better however it does highlight the issue that we have a feck load (and growing) of people on benefits. At some stage someone is going to get a coherent policy to contrast the current “give them cake” benefit strategy. Not this time though – D+ at best.

National has hit the lead on highlighting the soft standards with respect to gangs – Seymour unusually missed a beat and is now struggling to keep up.

    • For 9 years National relied on the ponzi scheme that is immigration for a false economy. Now we are reaping the rewards of an overgrown population of over a million in 10 years. Frankie our beneficiaries have increased pro rata. National missed a massive opportunity to stop the importation of aussie gangs because their pushback by Key was essential soft.
National are an oxymoron on the gang pushback.

      • Clark and Cullen started this and prior to covid Grunter and the Blairite continued this. It’s not just a National phenomenon although Key did master the strategy. Bertie – our welfare dependents haven’t increased pro-rate since covid – they have increased despite effective full employment!!!

The soft, soft approach to gangs over the last 5 years has resulted in more gang members, more guns and more violence. Your mob owns this and given this will only get worse while this treatment is applied. The opposition will quite rightly ride this all the way to the election.

        • “they have increased despite effective full employment!!!”
Which gives even more credibility to your lots ponzi scheme. Imagine if XKeyscore stood up to Dutton and showed some guts, we almost certainly would not have the gang population now. My lot, as you put it, are left to diffuse gang issues daily. Good luck with the next election, no chance with the swamp Kauri log or Fred Astaire in charge, none at all.

  3. ACT stands for Freedom for ACT supporters only. Leading the way to a NZ that cancels all views that don’t conform with their own. HRC commissioner? Sack him says ACT. HRC? Abolish it says ACT. Golriz? A menace to freedom says ACT. Beneficiaries? The State to surveil and control their spending and punish where the State deems appropriate. Bikies? The State to surveil and control their spending, where they can go, who they speak to. Gun owners? The State MUST NOT interfere with their rights including registration of weaponry. Maoris? no such animal. I’m amazed at how in tune they are with Victorian values that the next policy release will call for workhouses for the poor while instructing them to shout ‘Freedom’ every 5 minutes as the State slowly grinds them to dust. Marvelous!

  4. Who the fuck are they? The heel clicking nanny state who punishes like a self flagellating mother superior on meth?
    Poetic Bomber.

  5. We are developing crypto currencies and 2nd layer solutions like the ‘Lightening Network’ [BOLT Standards].

This is just backwards thinking from ACT. #FreeBritney !!

  6. ACT policy 2020 was the electronic card for Job Seekers after one month (for Sole parents after any child born while on a benefit).

    • That would be as close to an instant great depression as possible. There’s only one way of raising GDP growth above inflation during a public health crises – raise government borrowing to match the fiscal stimulus required.

  7. The term fascists according to George Orwell is meaningless.
He said most people would accept bully as a synonym.
Gangs are extreme bullies therefore I guess fascists.

    • So I guess the headline should read…

“FINALLY! ACT dump the pretense & revert back to the BULLY far right civil rights abuser we all know and love!

  8. All political parties in NZ are fascist, Martyn -promoting the interests banks, corporations and the military- but some are more overtly fascistic than others.

  9. Hate ACT all you wish, no I have never voted ACT, but the lefties will squeal and sneer (as the comments thus far) but the silent majority who do not squeal and scream will like any policy to stop/restrict the gangs criminal behavoir (and them killing and shooting up the place as they are currently doing helps ACT). ACT will keep there 10% vote slice, and increase it no doubt at next election. They have reached out to the voters fearful and sick of the gangs and the current Govt give them $3mil….the fall out of that move will be seen in the polling soon.

    • “shooting up the place”

ACT’s gun policy allows this. Hamilton man uses military style gun to shoot at police.
And it’s 3 million now is it, any advance on 3 million anyone?

As usual, very very loose on facts, the biggest oinker, squealer is in fact you I’m Right. Facts are, no money went to gangs , money went to a rehabilitation programme. Fits your hard right narrative perfectly, oink oink.

      • Speaking of loose on facts bert, it’s Labour policy seeing this explosion of gun violence, not anyone else.
This bad law and stupid legitimization of gangs by this government is going to end up with permanently arming police, something everyone knows means more people shot, more often brown people because that’s who is getting arrested most.
Nothing to do with ACT and neither would their policy have enabled it.

Jeez you are like pavlovs dog with the whole partisan politics thing.
It’s not always left good right bad -both labour and their offshoot ACT run neoliberal policies I don’t agree with.

          • Point me to a success – I was a Labour voter until the last ejection.
This is the worst government in living memory, and Shipleys crew was awful.

            • How old are you 22. This government is miles ahead of the appalling Key government quite possibly since parliament began.

10.Introducing free period products in primary, intermediate, secondary schools and kura
              11. Scrapped National Standards, giving teachers more time with students

Look I could go on and on and on but clearly you are very lazy and only listen to click bait and sound bite media clips.

Any one of those is a success, which makes your assessment on this government no more than kindergarten grade.

Do some research outside of mainstream rightwing media. And I seriously doubt you were ever a Labour supporter.

      • Actually it was Labours new firearms laws that transferred over 100000 semi automatic rifles into the black/grey market where they can only be owned & used by criminals. Firearms that were safely locked in secure safes are now… er somewhere else. Act is not the Government, Act don’t make the laws, Act don’t enforce the laws, they only opposed Labours poorly thought out law changes that were forced through, ignoring normal democratic processes, in haste, without waiting for the Royal Commission into the terrorist attacks report’s findings to be released. What you are seeing now are the consequences of those law changes. Feeling safer?

        • Over 100,000 semi automatic rifles into the grey/ black market. For christ sake, stop this poorly thought out narrative. Send the link to this statistic Richard. Actually ACT should have been united in taking these weapons off the streets, instead they send mixed messages into communities. Appalling political pointscoring. The Hamilton shooting was 2 streets over from where I live. Thanks to ACT, no, I don’t feel safer.
As with ACT’s stance on covid, how many would be dead now if ACT were in government with wide open borders, 100,000?

          • Based on calculations made by firearms dealers on the number of semi automatic rifles imported in to NZ, the numbers were estimated to be 170000 and 240000, the buyback recovered less than 60000, so more than 100000 firearms just disappeared. The firearms were never “on the street”, they were locked up in safes, now they are…

Here’s a link to the KPMG report commissioned by the Police, it includes a section with the estimate volumes of firearms that were now prohibited & would be removed by the Gun Buyback.
            https://www.police.govt.nz/sites/default/files/publications/kpmg-report-firearms-buy-back-pricing-june-2019.pdf

            • “The firearms were never “on the street”,

              From Stuff today…

“On one occasion in September 2020 a licence-holding associate visited Hamilton’s Gun City, spending $8977.99 cash to acquire five firearms and 1200 rounds of ammunition.

Those firearms were then handed over to McRae, who then on-sold them for cash or as part payment for ounces of methamphetamine to other non-licensed people involved in the criminal environment.”

I’d suggest to you they were on the streets by means of ill gotten gain.
Just because someone has a gun license does not make them an innocent as Seymour would make them out to be.

              • We are talking about the 100000 plus firearms that “disappeared” with the end of the Gun Buyback. They were never on the streets, they were safely stored in safes, now they somewhere else.

We are not talking about guns imported by criminals with their meth shipments or ones purchased by criminals who have been issued firearms licences due to failures of the NZ Police to properly vet applicants.

The guns that the Buyback recovered, were taken out of the safes of the most law abiding firearms owners.

There are considerably less law abiding firearm owners than there were before Labour introduced these laws, most likely there will be even less if the push the firearms register through.

                • How old are you 22. This government is miles ahead of the appalling Key government quite possibly since parliament began.
                  1.Increase in paid parental leave.

Do some research outside of mainstream rightwing media. And I seriously doubt you were ever a Labour supporter.

          • Just out of interest Bert, you do realise that Labour has been in Government for over 4 years now and since the last election, they rule alone with a reasonable majority. They can no longer say that Winston wouldn’t let us do x.

You may also not have realised that ACT aren’t the Government & before the last election, only had one MP & almost no power. The fact that they now have 10 MPs in parliament, is due in no small part, to the complete lack of respect shown to law abiding firearms owners by Labour, National, New Zealand First (who were crucified because of their lack of backbone) & the Greens.

Labour have no excuses, if they want to do something, no one can stop them, if they do nothing, it is because they want to. Stop blaming others, Labour is your party & apart of keeping Covid out, they have been worse than useless at almost everything else. Sure National won’t fix anything but we did hope Labour would at least try. This is both pathetic & embarrassing.

            • And they are trying, your pathetic and embarrassing attempt at irrelevant posturing reminds me of Hosking.

My lot as you put it, I have no problem with. ACT are shit, Labour are ahead of National on 20 issues by one of YOUR own Richard.

              https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/matthew-hooton-labour-crushing-national-on-top-20-issues/LE2NUETW3KFZR5G2DPGWHDHUFU/

You may not like it out of interest but I don’t actually rate your opinion even though your allowed one.
Stop blaming Labour as they just get on with getting on. The issue is you and you just don’t like them, get over it.

              • Actually, my “lot” is the Greens & they are even more crap than Labour at the moment. I have only ever voted for the Greens & Labour. EVER!

I also rate your opinion lower than that of Mike Hosking (and he is a moronic idiot), you have always been so partisan with red (rose) tinted glasses when it comes to Labour, so you can’t see they are just neoliberals with a red tie, National with a simile & a hug. I have enjoyed baiting over the years from the comments section of The Press/Stuff to here, you are so funny & easily riled. Have a nice day 😉

    • ‘the silent majority who do not squeal and scream will like any policy to stop/restrict the gangs criminal behavoir’

How about restricting the criminal behaviour of banks and corporations,’Im right’?

How about restricting the criminal behaviour of governments, none of which abide by their own statutes!!!

      • I’ve seen some argument-dodging “whataboutism” in my time, but that is breathtaking. Whatabout starting with the proudly self-described anti-social ferals who are the gang members, who operate in plain sight? Seems like a reasonable place to start.

  10. Interesting bed-pals in the 2023 general election?

The Stasi Act party & the Fascist Labour H8’ers party in cahoots with the Green Wash’n Capitalists party! What a combo!

  11. The best way to stop gangs is to cut off the source of their membership This would mean more spending on the parents and children at the bottom of the social ladder and less on them when they commit crime.
A child born into poverty is like new meat to to gangs as they can provide the wealth and support that is missing . No amount of control will stop them once they become a gang member as the more they offend the greater their mana .
All children born should be loved wanted and provided for if these are not there it would be better for the parents to be persuaded to not have children until they are better prepared.

      • Unfortunately there never seems to be any money for fences at the top of the cliff, but plenty for ambulances at the bottom of the cliff (prisons). Probably because those making the decisions have friends who own “ambulance” services & Kiwis often hate to see anyone else getting a “free lunch”.

Politicians tend to get elected for kicking welfare dependents and being “tough” on crime, New Zealanders seem to have a real punitive streak and this often shows in who they choose to lead them.

        • NZ’ers are like sheep they follow each other around on these issues, and forget who said what at the previous Election.

  12. The word revert itself means to return to a previous subject or condition, so the insertion of the word back in the sentence is incorrect.

    • So the insinuation of the ACT party pretending to be what they are not, then reverting back to whom they really are is not correct John?

      • Bert. Yes-ACT are just pretenders. Seymour’s rise in the polls must be threatening to Judith and co.
If she had any sense of survival Judith would abandon John Key’s ‘Johnnymandering’ strategy and advise Epsom voters to ignore ACT and vote for a real National candidate.
Epsom voters being the sheeples they are would follow orders and potentially oust Seymour and his nine list hangers on who would fade into the obscurity they deserve.
But I fear that Voters nationwide would swell the party vote for National and give Judith a better chance to be PM. But at least it would be an honest election based on respect for democratic ethics.

  13. Right-wing Radio was lauding Richard Prebble’s article in the Herald today, which apparently savaged the Government for trying to help gang members beat meth addiction. I haven’t read the article as I won’t spend money to support that publication.
The Dominionpost also ran an opinion article on the same subject this morning by from Ian Hutson who, from his work, obviously knows a lot more about working with drug addicts than Prebble ever will.

    It’s well worth a read:

    https://www.stuff.co.nz/opinion/125805986/dont-write-off-gang-drug-rehab-programme

  14. Bert I’m over giving you grammar lessons you obviously don’t understand but that’s not your fault.

    • You believe you’re a wordsmith, an orator, but you are clearly neither. I was over your petty insignificant posts some time ago. I’d suggest a lesson in common sense, the area you fail dismally in but that’s not your fault.

  15. Prebble a member of the Labour Party where the sell down of Government assets took place then ACT.
What on earth has that got to do with Muldoon?
    Times married a black mark?
    I’m totally confused.

  16. Thanks Bert.
I don’t profess to be a wordsmith but I am familiar with fundamental grammar.
Yes it’s my fault being unable to understand the connection you were trying to make with Richard Prebble.
    Have a lovely day.

    • I’ll help you out Johnnboy, you need it. Scroll up to Verity Verdant’s post for relevance.

Happy to help, have a jolly good day.

    • Speaking of ‘grammar’ it’s a fun fact that Prebble, Douglas, and Seymour (to name but three right-whingers), are old boys of Auckland Grammar – aka the fACTory.
