Ports of Auckland boss Tony Gibson steps down over ‘persistent personal attacks’

Ports of Auckland chief executive Tony Gibson has stepped down over what he’s described as “persistent and sometimes personal attacks” and media criticism.

In a statement released on Thursday afternoon, Gibson referred to his experiences in the job and his outlook on the port’s operations.

“I feel that this focus on me is damaging to the company and to the great people that I work with,” he said.

His statement did not acknowledge the deaths of three people during his term.

It wasn’t just the 3 deaths, it was his attitude.

The report earlier into safety at the Port this year was just so damning, the only conclusion was to sack Gibson.

The Union hating Tony Gibson did everything in his power to ostracise and silence the Union. He actively ignored their concerns, he oversaw an incentive scheme that endangered  workers and he refused to lower speed limits in the Port.

His claim that he was staying on to fix the problems he ignored was just outrageous!

If your Doctor had ignored your concerns about being incredibly sick and then after becoming incredibly sick, then demanded to remain on as your Dr to do the surgery, you’d tell them to go jump!

Look, this isn’t a private company, it’s owned by Auckland Council, the public ethos demands leaders who are going to put health and safety first.

It was untenable that he remains.

Good riddance.

  1. Another example of boards and management exploiting staff to meet their bonus KPI’s. When is this dangerous nonsense going to be seen for what it is? The need for worker representation has never been greater; why is it that workers have to pay for this representation (union fees) out of their wages, when management use company funds to implement schemes that exploit workers and then get bonuses for doing it!

  2. Good riddance, goodbye, “get in your flash car and piss off” Tony. What a tosser. And what a pack of spineless cowards for letting him jump ship and not sacking him.

  3. ” Look, this isn’t a private company, it’s owned by Auckland Council ”

It should never have taken this long to remove this over paid evil individual who clearly is not human and has no conscience and is the perfect neo liberal appointee.

His inevitable golden handshake should be awarded to the families of those who have died under his watch.

Helen Kelly would have shown more backbone than the super city mayor and his shit councillors.

    • Goodbye Tony, your legacy on POA and the culture there speaks volumes to your leadership.

Time the council controlled companies are put back under Auckland Councils control instead of all the corporate noses in the troughs and poor service and unaccountability we now have in our port, water and transport.

  4. I would say ”what a pack of spineless cowards for letting him jump ship and not PROSECUTING him”… THREE DEATHS?,… What’s going on there?

Don’t let him get in a flash car and escape,- lets find out what’s going on here. There’s 3 people who will never return home. Fuck him. And fuck all those helping to cover his tracks, – they are his accomplices and aiders and abettors.

  5. Sacking the CEO (Tony) for the two recent deaths doesn’t sound to be able to fix the problem at the port. The two deaths were both occurred after a people capability manager was promoted to the GM Container Terminal Operations in April 2019 and this GM has been directly in charge of everything abt these workers. Both deaths happened in less than a 12-month period after the GM was appointed. Why the hell the CEO was thrown out to be the scapegoat in front of the public while the incompetent terminal operations GM can walk away from what the GM should be responsible for???

    • He didn’t get sacked he resigned. And the deaths of 3 people aren’t the only problems POA were facing. They had back logs of shipping, with up to 8 containers ships sitting in the Hauraki gulf earlier this year waiting up to 3 weeks to be unloaded, while other skipped POA altogether. POA have an automation system they can’t get right. The way I see it, the buck stops with the former ceo. He’s was in charge, he should have sorted it all out. The reports about h+s at POA are indicative of the culture there. Ignorance and arrogance of the highest level.
