Today is World Keffiyeh Day (the keffiyeh is a piece of iconic Palestinian dress) and a big group of MPs got together to wear keffiyehs as a show of solidarity with Palestinians at a time when it is so desperately needed – they ran out of keffiyehs as you can see.
The MPs are:
Ibrahim Omer
Marja Lubeck Labour List MP
Marama Davidson MP
Willie Jackson
Tracey McLellan – MP for Banks Peninsula
Rachel Boyack MP
Sarah Pallett – MP for Ilam
Helen White
Emily Henderson MP
Duncan Webb Labour MP for Christchurch Central
Tamati Coffey
Vanushi Walters MP
Golriz Ghahraman MP
Teanau Tuiono
Chlöe Swarbrick
Anahila Kanongataá-Suisuiki Labour MP
Ricardo Menéndez March MP
For the more senior journalists – the first New Zealand MP to wear a keffiyeh was National MP Marilyn Waring back in 1984.
They do know its a head dress … right?
It can also be worn around the shoulders if you don’t have an agal, SPC. The problem to my eyes is that it should be white with a black fishnet pattern to be a Palestinian symbol. Each Islamic country has their own colour gutra; I think the red is for; Saudi Arabia, and the green; Pakistan. So that’s a bit awkward.
They don’t know a lot, obviously, since they’re backing the genocidal murderers. Of course we may have known they wouldn’t be wearing kippahs.
Well they know a lot more than you do Gaby, not that that would be difficult to achieve.
But none of them are any good. They’re the useless ones!
This has not been widely publicised.
NZ Parliament has had many opportunities to pass a motion of support for the oppressed Palestinians.
The Reuters US based news is pumped at us daily.
Human right accusations from the US never mention the Palestinians but wastes air space droning on about the fictitious Xinjian “genocide”.
Today we heard someone speak for the Palestinian story , followed by a much longer mixed justification for Israeli terror.
Who runs our news.
Do we dare have investigative journalism or is that deliberately locked out.
John W: “Human right accusations from the US never mention the Palestinians but wastes air space droning on about the fictitious Xinjian “genocide”.”
Exactly.
My view about the pic above is that it shows more pointless virtue-signalling from a bunch of MPs, whose knowledge about the complexities of that situation is embarrassingly shallow.
Stay out of it, say I. Instead, spend some useful time reading up on the history of that area and of the conflict. You – and we – will all be better off as a result.
Agreed D’E
Balanced history is never a pert of the news and most are quite ignorant about the past.
The mainstream news coverage of the ongoing terrorism being inflicted on the Palestinians by Israel at the present time has been so pro Israeli and so minimal there is no excuse any more for the biased views of our news editors. radio nz excepted .Thankfully we have the internet. And John Minto
