US Senate votes to acquit Donald Trump

The US Senate has voted to acquit former president Donald Trump on the charge of inciting last month’s insurrection at the Capitol, concluding a historic impeachment trial that exposed the fragility of America’s democratic traditions and left a divided nation to come to terms with the violence sparked by his defeated presidency.

The vote was 57-43, short of the 67 votes needed for conviction. Seven Republicans broke from their party to find Trump guilty. It was the shortest impeachment trial in US history, lasting only five days.

Trump welcomed the acquittal in a lengthy statement praising the Senate’s verdict. “This has been yet another phase of the greatest witch hunt in the history of our country,” the statement read. “No president has ever gone through anything like it.”

The statement continues: “Our historic, patriotic and beautiful movement to Make America Great Again has only just begun.”

And the Republicans let this orange fascist off the hook for attempting an insurrection by refusing to vote against his deplorable actions.

Those gutless, spineless cowards!

This was Republicans opportunity to draw a line under his Fascism and they’ve failed to do so. That means Trump has the opportunity to come back in 2024 with more malice, more hatred and more revenge fantasies.

That the Republicans refused to punish him after he set a violent murderous mob upon the capital Building will stain Republicans politically for the rest of the century.

The Republicans are the Neville Chamberlain’s of our time, they have appeased the Trump and QAnon fanatics when they should have stood up to them!

The shadow of a fascist Amerika will now hang over Biden.

Todays result shows that American Democracy is a sad, sick joke and Republicans are ethical cancer.

What a terrible and shameful indictment on the truths America holds self evident.

  1. Do you honestly believe Democrats would vote to impeach a fellow Democrat president? They are two sides of the same coin. Yes, he shouldve been convicted, yes he’s a moronic twat but so they all are. No point being all high and mighty when your side is no better. That applies to this countries politics also.

    • Way to prove yourself irrelevant… What passes for opinion here is pure assumption.. Not even particularly rational assumption at that… All you’ve succeeded in doing with this drivel is show yourself up as a shallow and partisan dittohead… people like you are an integral and necessary part of the problems we face today…. Every time I hear, or read this stuff, I mourn for the fact that the “pinnacle of evolution” that humans purportedly represent will be the shortest lived species in the history of planet Earth… Go on, say something that actually means something, I’m sure you could if you really tried…

    • Not quite sure your argument will sit well with the family whose members died in the insurrection.
This lays squarely at the feet of Trump, not the demorcrats, end of story.

  2. America will be a disaster from now on. Trump has literally gotten away with another crime yet again.

Trump will now probably deem himself as invincible. He can get away with murder almost.

How much money changed hands within the American Republican Party in the last 2 weeks for Trump to get away with what he did?

However how many court suits will be catching up with him at long last? He has done the dirty on so many people over so many decades that he may well be having to watch his back from now on. He no longer has the safety of the White House and being President to avoid taking responsibility for his actions.

Trump is insane but now has a chance to ruin America further if he become president again in 2024. And looking at his insanity could it well be hereditary i.e even his own children may have got that gene from him?

Lets hope to goodness there will never ever be another Trump in the White House to reap havoc upon what is obviously a broken country that is the Un-united States of America.

  3. Calm down Martyn. It was only ever a show trial, and the result was a foregone conclusion.

Kunstler, an American living in America, had it sussed a week ago.

‘Debuting this week: America’s first genuine show trial, the second impeachment of Donald Trump, an exercise in pure malice designed by a party in power to teach a lesson to the party out of power. The lesson: we’re gonna getcha, getcha, getcha, as in the old song by Blondie. That’s it, and that’s all.

The exercise is so transparently idiotic and unconstitutional that Chief Justice John Roberts declined to preside over it, as the constitution specifies. Say, what…? Do you mean that in a proceeding this grave, he can just… demur? Because… why? Because he doesn’t feel like it? (Or something like that?) His Supreme Honor declined also to furnish a reason — though, if the Chief Justice views the trial as extraconstitutional, perhaps he should say so, for the record.’

However, the antics in Washing Town do keep the masses distracted from the really important stuff, like Planetary Meltdown and the Failure of Capitalism. That’s when they’re not glued to watching Netflix.

  4. Thank Bejasus that Trump is gone, maybe some sanity may prevail as all the derangement lifts.

When it does some salient points will emerge to test socialists faith.

First the Dems have not supported the American working class in 50 years, they are the party of the PMC (professional middle class). They dont and wont give a toss about the workers. Their real allegiance is to corporate capital.

Second, Trump has broken the Republicans in two, there are his supporters (the working classes and Christian conservatives) , and there are the old oligarchs like Romney. It wont hold together. Should Trump ally the workers with a Sanders style programme he could break both parties.

This result highlights both the triumph and failure of identity politics. It has helped win an election through divisiveness but it has forced one huge group into recognition of their class basis and ethnicity. These are supposed to be the people socialism supports. Their support can not be guaranteed to the Left.

End result, virtue signalling PMC and the corporates hold the field and will continue to suck the life blood of American workers and poor to enrich themselves.

    Great result for the “Left”…..

  5. Sly and Robbie.
This further proves to me that democracies which are also capitalist are not democracies at all, and never will be, because the captains of industry will never allow democracies to remain truly democratic. Democracies which are capitalist are fascist regimes in drag and if they’re not yet, they’re on their way to becoming so.
Just look at where AO/NZ has sunk down to? The mini hitler, heir roger douglas , created a fascist fiefdom where we can easily see that his cronies profiting most from our taxes while we must now walk past the homeless and those merely existing while in poverty while heir douglas swanks about in the company of his riche elite corporate-capitalist Reichstag:
    Wikipedia:
“Reichstag is a German word generally meaning parliament, more directly translated as Diet of the Realm or National diet, or more loosely as Imperial Diet.”
So? Based on the understanding of the [word] we have a fascist faux-parliament of crooks exploiting us for their advantage and wealth creation and we never voted them in and now that they’re [in] we’ll find that we can’t vote them out either. That’s why it’s difficult to distinguish between national and labour. They have a capitalist-fascist framework woven into them which controls them both.
Trump is going to cause extraordinary trouble within the U$A and beyond. All we can do now is to hope he drops dead.
DO NOT DO DEBT ! ESPECIALLY MORTGAGE DEBT ! IT’S.A.TRAP!
FORCE THE BANKS OUT OF AO/NZ.
WRITE OFF ALL MORTGAGES AND SET US FREE.

  6. Would the difference had been any different if Hillary had been in the dock. No and there is your answer on why the correct result was achieved.

If we are counting lives Obama killed multiples more due to idiocy in Syria yet won a nobel peace prize go figure….

    • Deduct the dead bodies attributable to the most inhumane of weapons of mass destruction – sanctions that have been blithely imposed, combined with the likes of the Trump (supported by the me-too UK) sponsored genocide of Yemenis and the Trump record doesn’t look too positive. It seems no matter who holds the presidency, shit happens to others without consequences.

    • “If we are counting lives Obama killed multiples more due to idiocy in Syria yet won a nobel (sic) peace prize go figure….”

Be careful where you go with that idiotic comparison or we might start counting the corpses of those who died as a direct result of the Republican driven Iraq invasion and the regional power vacuum it created.

  7. There’s a chance the acquittal could give the US a shadow President in the form of Trump, as he becomes more confident to rally his mob of thugs and ignoramuses underground to act on his behalf, as per 6 January. After all he has only recently stated his MAGA movement has just begun!

However I’d say the outcome of near future court cases against Trump involving his private and business life, will be the deciding factor of whether or not he will be in a position to create further chaos and mayhem in the US. Let’s hope Justice prevails against him.

  8. It does not make outward sense that except for a few, the majority of republicans voted against finding Trump guilty which contradicts the statement from Mitch McConnell that he holds Trump responsible for the insurrection but it seems that many republicans, including McConnell felt that because Trump was no longer President then he could not be impeached.

I think Trump is celebrating too early because he could still face criminal charges which he deserves to face. His statement – “This has been yet another phase of the greatest witch hunt in the history of our country. No president has ever gone through anything like it,” – https://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/impeachment-trial-us-senate-votes-to-acquit-donald-trump/DHKGNMNRL6G5YVW5X5WZFOMPLE/ – is the statement of a loser and a criminal but when you look at it, its like he doesn’t get it. My reply to Trump’s comment is that no President has done as much damage to his country and to the world as he has done. No President has tried to alter the democratic election process and committed the crimes he has committed and no President has displayed the moral cowardness of a bully that he has and that he is.

A commentator above blamed President Obama for multiple deaths in Syria. That comment is too simplistic but even so, does not justify Trump’s actions in inciting the insurrection and everything else he has done wrong. But talking about Syria even Trump urged Obama not take any action against the Syrian regime for carrying out the chemical attack in the so-called rebel held area of Syria which caused many deaths – https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/trump-white-house-pins-blame-syrian-attack-obama-n742581 – so you cannot compare Obama with Trump.

    • Yes you can compare him. He has blood on his hands and US foreign policy misadventures under Obama created ISIS. Rather than fixing Bush’s mess he decided finish the fuck up. The left need to own Obama’s horrid foreign policy history.

Take the blinkers off both sides have smeared themselves in manure over the last 2 decades.

  9. The main point of this pantomime was to divert attention from the cause of the riot in the capital in the first case. Namely that a very large proportion of Americans believe that they have just been involved in a comprehensively fraudulent election. That there were layers of precautions put in place to see that Trump was not re-elected , but the unprecedented turnout of voters supporting him almost overwhelmed those precautions requiring the most extreme actions late on election night.
They also know that they can’t expect to repeat it and get away with it in 4 years time, so disqualifying him before hand is essential . Desperate measures; watch them get ever more desperate.
Trump is going to represent the vast majority of Americans against the unelected establishment in 4 years time. Not that I think he is wonderful, but he is the only name recognisable enough for folk to be able to vote for a non establishment rep that will get wide spread recognition. Tulsi or Bearnie would be a far better choice , especially Tulsi, but she is too little known.
    D J S

  10. I think that the damage that this circus has caused has been exagerated. All this means is that in 4 years time Trump will lose again Yes, he commands a very large number of lunatics but there is a much larger electorate that will never vote for him and he has played all his tricks now. As long as he is loose the vote of the extreme right is tied up by a group that makes a lot of noise but will never hold power.

  11. Outlook is grim but Trump may yet face criminal charges over incitement to insurrection and a long list of other crimes.
The whole four years have been sickening and at least three decades in the (direct) making.

Unless the courts step up to seek accountability in next 12 months USA will be lost to fascism.

  12. ”Trump not guilty of incitement – American Democracy is a sad, sick joke and Republicans are ethical cancer”

    ———————-

Good bloody job. Anyone remember Nixon? Great day for American democracy, wasn’t it?

Anyone recall George Bush Senior who was caught running down a flight of stairs in Dealey Plaza in 1963 and who gave an alibi about being an oil magnate when he was really a senior agent in the CIA?

Anybody recall George Bush Junior who along with Tony Blair foisted the ‘Weapons of mass destruction ‘ lie onto us to make a unilateral decision to invade Iraq and destabilize the Middle East?

And then there was Lynden B Johnson, – who was flying in an airplane as his President was shot at the same time in Dealey Plaza and being sworn in as the new President, – with Jacki Kennedy as a witness…Lyndon B ,… who reversed the decision by JFK to withdraw troops from Vietnam , and to commit even more troops, and not only that – to give lucrative contracts to his mates in the military industrial complex. Money for jam, folks.

    And he was a ‘Democrat’.

An embarrassing point most left wingers dont want to acknowledge because it wilts the narrative is that the ‘Democrat party’ was in favour of slavery in the American Civil War. They were in favour slavery, folks. Slave labour and conditions. And were the main advocates for the succession from the Union of the Southern states, no less.

Thats who you support. Kind of makes your woke left shit smell bad, dont it.

Moving on, or moving all around the place, we have Ford,… the bumbler, then we had Carter, a good fellow, who did his best at the Camp David accords, and then of course Maggies lover, Ronald the Reagan. Nice neo liberalism , eh.

So convoluted as it seems,… I seem to remember all you people accusing Trump of starting World War Three.

Lets have a look at that, shall we?

1/ While wining and dining Chinas Prime Minister in his Florida retreat, – Trump sent a ground penetrating missile into a more or less disused air force base, – and NOT BEFORE he warned both Russian and Syrian personnel he was going to do it, and as a result?- no personnel were harmed.

2/ So while he was doing that, – he sent a clear message to Chinas Prime Minister, that any aggression in the South China seas with the installation of missile launching facility’s on manmade islands WILL NOT be tolerated.

    And no one was hurt.

3/ Furthermore, – despite the best efforts of George Soros and Rupert Murdoch in trying to slant not only American opinion but that of the globe and its gullible residency into believing Trump would cause World War Three with North Korea, – he did in fact do the opposite you fools.

Not only did he meet personally with Kim Jong and front up and not sit behind a desk thousands of kilometers away, – he gave YOU, you woke left shitters, – a reason to get out of bed in the morning free from any thoughts of being fried with a nuclear bomb attack.

So maybe you want to pile on because hes a Republican. Or maybe you get a feel good thing going on in joining in with the crowd because it relives you of having to think. Whatever. I dont care.

Just remember your beloved Democratic party was the party that supported SLAVERY.

And while your at it?- have a watch of this: Americas last great President.

    And so should you.

    • Wild Katipo, your understanding of US history is at best simplistic. Yes indeed, the Democratic Party was not so much upholding slavery at the time of the Civil War but were merely the opposition party to Lincoln’s Republicans, whose senators only barely managed to squeeze a vote for emancipation. Yes, Lincoln was the Republican president who instigated and oversaw emancipation but the history of both parties and their relationship to Black Americans is complex in the post-civil war and Jim Crow years. The Democrats gradually became the party of choice for Black voters while the Republicans became the oppressors, as seen through the civil rights movement of the 1960s. And by the way, it was Johnson who passed the Civil Rights Act.

  14. If it weren’t for the fact that the Dem-GOP monoparty hadn’t managed to come up with anything whatsoever approaching evidence of any offence, then they may have stood a chance. Moreover, Trump isn’t even the sitting President, so an impeachment was always a slightly bonkers notion and a perversion of the Constitution. Add these two factors, and it’s no surprise that this sham fell over.

Furthermore, if the act (by radical, subversive Leftists) of setting up an “autonomous zone” in Portland – effectively claiming independence from the US – wasn’t “insurrection,” then nothing is.
