  1. Contrary to sparkling media reports yesterday, for the December 2020 quarter, unemployment in NZ was up by 25,000. 15,000 were women. Just like the weather, if we forecast really big trouble and then in reality it was only bad, it doesn’t mean it was actually good – neither does it validate our forecasting methods.

According to the government statistics website, the number of self employed increased, but you’d want to take into account the emergency adjustments to provisional tax made as a measure to combat the effects of covid, before cheering that. It’s as if the government predicted the potential for a large flow of money to change direction, but had limited confidence that it would either arrive, or continue to flow. It could be that these newly self employed people aren’t so much self employed in the pre-covid sense, but a chunk of fragmented employees now carrying all the responsibility for the direction of an economy usually controlled by a government. You would need a journalist who had the time and interest, to find out. Then they could dig around in things like how “confidence” and job security is created and measured, and look into the maintenance of big numbers like 141,000, and how this might compare to numbers in 1982 for example, and why that might be, or maybe just how easy it is to be listed as self employed by the IRD. Then we might start to get a feel for the larger picture.

    • Great points Ethnic Jedi. It would be good if more journo’s were capable of investigative reporting instead of fluff advertorials. Likewise Eric Watson and his merry band of cronies glamourised by their money and not held to account.

  2. White collar crime is OK in NZ! While it is great that the media are reporting on Eric Watson as it shines a light on his activities but why with such an admiring tone?

This is a guy who hides money in elaborate trusts and described by a UK judge as having “little or no weight on Mr Watson’s credibility”. He said Watson had told lies in relation to aspects of the case, and he regarded him as “a witness whose evidence is almost worthless”..

Liar, convicted white collar criminal, IRD fraudster, and in contempt of court, but the media in NZ seem to be interested in glamourising him rather than shining a light on his crimes and deeds against others.

“Eric Watson is broke, but not the way most people understand the term.

Fresh out of Pentonville Prison, he stepped on to a private jet to Ibiza in December, where he’s been living a life which doesn’t seem too far removed from what people thought he had before.

But his whole exercise of him forking over millions of dollars to Owen Glenn, coming down with Covid-19 followed by long-Covid, and then being thrown in jail for contempt last year has taught him he doesn’t need much to live.

House? He can stay at a friend’s spare house in Ibiza. Travel? There’s his mate’s private jet. Or air miles, which he says he’s been using to hop between European countries to put together property deals.”

Such a nice guy his wife even tried to commit suicide while they were married and Eric made sure when she left she did not get half the assets…

He even rips his own wife off!

    Nice guy!

This cronies are still around in NZ though, probably living the high life and doing more of the same knowing that NZ will never do anything. https://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/BU0108/S00118/watson-appoints-newland-to-head-cullen.htm https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/118408923/eric-watsons-collapsed-cullen-group-owes-more-than-200-million-to-creditors

Funny how a court in the UK was the only one to call a halt to Eric Watson’s behaviour and put him in prison.

Weird how being convicted of deceit of millions of dollars and failing to pay IRD, is a slap on the hand in NZ and you can avoid payment easily but if you are steal a fraction of that in other circumstances as an employee you would be in prison.

Double standards and weak laws for white collar fraudulent activities are a big driver of inequality in NZ!
