Can someone please get David an emotional support peacock

Fresh from claiming that NZ was a fascist state because we have state sanctioned public holidays like Christmas, David Seymour has startled the country once again by claiming taxing the top 2% more is ‘divisive populism’.

I’m not kidding

ACT Party leader David Seymour criticised the plan, calling it “divisive populism” that will raise little revenue.

“Jacinda Ardern likes to say we’re all in this together, but Labour is picking on a small group of New Zealanders to fund the COVID-19 recovery,” he said.

…taxing the richest amongst us is ‘divisive populism’ is it?

What about being the only Party to vote against gun laws that stopped Gun fetishists having access to their favourite toy machine guns? Wasn’t that ‘divisive populism’?

Demanding beneficiaries take a benefit cut to show solidarity with wealthy CEOs cutting their astronomical salaries? Wasn’t that ‘divisive populism’?

What about the weird anti 1080 space ACT now inhabit. Isn’t that ‘divisive populism’?

I love the terror the Right seem to have of these 3 things right now, it’s like the actual end of western civilisation for some.

  1. He’s right, it won’t raise much revenue, they’ll hide it in trusts same as they always have. CGT is what is desperately needed.

  2. How do you know someone is tribal Labour – they actually think the released tax policy is good. So we are spending 80-odd billion yet (at best) half a billion a year is going to balance the books. FFS This is more pathetic than the public holiday bribe. Seriously this will have the effect of pushing water uphill with a rusty rake.

Lol a truely transformative government. This is John Key and his fucking flag material. And yet the sheeple of NZ lap it up just like they did with honest John. If anyone didn’t believe that once we give up on covid-19 elimination that we aren’t going to revert to pump and dump immigration I have a fully funded light rail line to the airport to sell you. Indeed the RB is encouraging a larger speculation bubble.

Its days like this I’m depressed for humanity…….

  3. All in all, a pathetic policy announcement which satisfies nobody. 100K isn’t that huge a salary anymore, and people on such wages generally hope to advance and maybe make 200K or more some day. So Labour is not only going to lose the votes of those who currently make 180K, but also of those with ambition to make such a salary.

Meanwhile on the left, it’s obvious that this tweak is not going to result in any fundamental changes to the neoliberal order which still pervades the Labour Party. If they were serious about reforming our tax system they’d implement a CGT and a land tax, and remove GST from essential items and replace it with a luxury/consumption tax.

  4. David was on the TVNZ couch this morning saying we must come together to defeat suicide. The man who drove the Assisted Dying legislation. Our parliamentarians are in the process of perfecting their doublespeak now. Headboy Hipkins from liberal Labour the will be clamping down on protest and free speech next.

    • What sort of greedy loser would vote on such a selfish grounds as contributing a bit more tax on whatever surplus is earned above $180K
